A Tribute to Astronaut Alan Bean (1932 - 2018) by Chris Carberry, CEO Explore Mars On behalf of the entire Explore Mars, Inc. family, I would like to express our profound sadness at the passing of Captain Alan Bean, who, as a member of the Apollo XII crew, was the fourth person to walk on the lunar surface. Bean subsequently launched a second successful career as an impressionist painter depicting his fellow astronauts on the Moon. About 10 years ago, and on several occasions since then, I had the privilege of chatting with Captain Bean. From those brief encounters I learned that he would rarely respond to an email with an in-kind reply; instead, he would almost always reply with a far more personal, and much appreciated, phone call, and we had some wide-ranging and energetic conversations. Perhaps our most memorable discussion took place when I was serving as the Executive Director of The Mars Society (TMS). In 2009, I interviewed Bean for TMS’ magazine, The Mars Quarterly (http://members.marssociety.org/TMQ/TMQ-V1-I3.pdf). Naturally, I asked him the obligatory questions about his time on the Moon and his thoughts about whether he thought we would have made more progress after 40 years. Bean told me that “….we were going as fast as and far as we could technically… So I imagined that we would keep doing that, and after we got to the Moon, then we’d build little bases. I remember thinking I’d see people land on #Mars in my lifetime. Then when they cancelled Apollo 18-20, I began to think, maybe we won’t do that…There was 128 years in the time between when Columbus discovered America and the Pilgrims came over. It just takes time to do these things. Pete and Al brought a self-timer with them so they could take a photo together in front of Surveyor 3. Unfortunately they were unable to find the timer in the stowage bag when the time came. Thankfully I was able to share this photo with Alan last year and he enjoyed it. #alanbean #apollo12
