Celebrating an Assassination?
Just about a year ago, the United States government authorized the extra judicial killing of Osama bin Laden. As far as I can see it, our best legal argument for killing him is that we are at war with al-Qaeda, and he was their leader. But we don't treat al-Qaeda members as soldiers and prisoners of war; we treat them as criminals. We cannot simply execute people without a trial and call ourselves a just society.
But even if he was a soldier, we could not legally kill him in cold blood. All accounts seem to point to bin Laden being shot unarmed by Navy SEALs who were ordered not to take him alive even if he surrendered. These soldiers were in a foreign country and a country who we were not at war with. They had no legal authority to carry out such an act. In short, the U.S. government carried out a murder and a potential act of war against Pakistan.
However, this wasn't the most disturbing part of it all to me. The United States acted illegally, and, in the long run, the rule of law is more important than killing a single terrorist. But the world is a better place without bin Laden, so i could forgive that. What was really disturbing was the celebration that followed. People all over the country went on the streets and celebrated not just an illegal act but the death of a fellow human being. The did not cheer, "We are safe!" They cheered, "He is dead!" It was a truly sad moment in our history.Â
Now, the one year anniversary has come and it seems like the celebration will start again. President Obama's campaign has already put out a horrific ad which attempts to score political points from this assassination. I encourage everyone who reads this to condemn such blatant politicization of a death and to not join in the celebration of an illegal killing.Â
Perhaps, the assassination was right. I don't think so. But even if it was the right decision, Osama bin Laden was a human being. Any time that it is necessary to kill our enemies rather than negotiate with them, a tragedy has occurred. For better or for worse, that is what happened on May 2, 2011. Let's not celebrate it. Instead, let us have a sober conversation about how the United States alienated the Muslim world and turned people that used to be its allies (bin Laden received CIA aid to fight against the Soviet Union) into enemies who seek to kill its people. It is that kind of reflection and not the killing of one man that has a chance to bring peace.
al-qaeda doesn't exist.
its made up. just so the government can eventually say they ended something that was killing a lot of americans to get our confidence and trust in the government up again. they already did it a little bit with osama bin laden, see, this man was absolutely no threat to us. he was working for us, he was trained how to fly a plane and fight in combat in america, and right now, he isn't dead, we payed him quite a bit of money to fake his death just so it would seem like to the citizens of america that the government and the military are trying to help and protect us.Â
Osama Bin Laden Dead?
Osama bin Laden reportedly has been killed, various media outlets reported Sunday night.
The topic of the unexpected speech is reported to be homeland security, but no other details were released.President Barack Obama is expected to make a late-night announcement, the White House announced late Sunday.
The announcement is expected to be a major one, WSB Radio Washington, D.C. reporter Jamie Dupree said.
Bin Laden, the founder of the terrorist group al-Qaede, is thought to be the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S.
The United States has reported to have the body of Osama Bin Laden in possession. Terror alerts will allegedly remain high in fear of an al-Qaeda revenge attack. At this time President Barack Obama is expected to make the formal announcement within the hour.
The burden of proof weighs heavily on the US military. DNA testing will be a necessity and will images of the body. Bin Laden has been known as the most wanted man in the history of the world.
 Osama Bin Laden pronounced DEAD!
After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world's most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.
The official, who spoke Monday on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security matters, did not immediately say where that occurred
