AKIRA BEARD An excellent interview conducted by @comstocksmag for @akirabeard. I'm always facinated by the great lengths artists take to achieve theirs goals and the individual journies they take in that process. No two artists are ever on the same path, there is a great uniqueness to every one of us in this regard. Former SF (TL) based artist @akirabeard is surely a fine example of this, both during his years in SF and expansion outwards into the great unknown. Not only does his recent interview give insight into his personal and artistic struggles/successes; it also provides a great example of what we all (artists) have to go through (each in our own individual ways) when we sign up for this lifestyle. The journey is never easy nor predictable for any of us, but it's our purpose that drives us and adds meaning to our lives. 'Subconscious Portrait #1' by Akira Beard @akirabeard currently on view for #Circles. "In psychology, the totality of the human psyche is formed by the conscious and unconscious (or subconscious)mind. I’ve spent the greater portion of my life becoming acquainted with the conscious side, and only during the past few years have i began to explore it’s counterpart. The unconscious is a mysterious phenomena. It makes sense why it is symbolized by ‘the shadow’, darkness, the ocean’s depth, and so on. The greater extent of artwork that i’ve ever made reflects a more conscious oriented approach with creativity. An example of what I mean by this might begin with the idea to paint a specific person’s portrait.  Even before making the first brush stroke it is already known to some extent what the end result will look like.The process mainly relies on drawing from a knowledge base with analyzing the model, and transferring an interpreted likeness thru a medium (paint) onto the canvas. When a likeness has been achieved to whatever desired extent, the piece is complete. My experience with the subconscious is the polar opposite. The painting begins from a starting point with not knowing. The image, if any happens to be formed, will manifest itself onto the canvas during the process with painting. This revealing, for myself is the point. Sometimes. Images at times appear, but from where? Obviously from inside the mind. At times the experience with this has a sense with being a stranger to myself in how I’m aware its from my hand the image is being drawn, but because of the random, accidental nature with how it came, for a second I don’t feel entirely responsible for it. Thru art making, I have explored the juxtaposing of these two counterparts to the psyche. This leads to the artwork being inconsistent, at least on the surface with repetitive results of imagery and style. One piece may look completely different than the next depending where on the psyche’s circle from where it was made, with the varying degrees of a collaborate effort between the conscious and subconscious taking effect." #moderneden #801Greenwich #SF #AkiraBeard (at Modern Eden Gallery)
