trick or treat
Keiji looks up to the sky and questions things. Really questions them.
What is he doing?
Why is here?
Who is he pretending to be?
It’s a cool day and he wraps his arms around himself when the breeze picks up and sends dried leaves skittering past him. It doesn’t help much. He’s made the mistake of wearing a lighter sweater, not realizing just how well the sunshine and bright skies disguised the crispness of the air.
The sun beats down on him and for a moment he wishes for the sweltering heat of summer.
But it’s only for a moment and then it’s gone. The longing swept away along the cold breeze and buried under the sound of leaves and branches crackling underfoot as he slips among the trees. Thoughts like that only lead to trouble after all.
—
It’s been a long time since Yuutarou has been in these woods. He used to do it quite often. He’d wander the woods alone, watching the lights and shadows among the trees, listening to the creatures chitter all around him, sitting on rocks and just existing.
Then he met Keiji and he wasn’t alone. He’s everything Yuutarou has always loved about these woods. Keiji being here meant that there was someone else to watch. Someone else to listen. Someone else to exist.
The woods need someone in them to exist.
For a very long time that had been Yuutarou. Then it had been Yuutarou and Keiji. Lately it’s been just Keiji.
Yuutarou pulls himself out of the rocks and drags himself through the streams and shuffles along the leaf-strewn hills until he can sense Keiji. He’s in the air, under the rocks, among the trees. He’s every leaf slowly falling to the ground and every creature scuttling up a tree.
He’s everything Yuutarou has always hated about these woods.
—
Leaves crunch behind him, a familiar pattern of steps approaching him slowly, cautiously. Like he’s nothing more than a wild animal, easily startled. He might have been, once. Once upon a time in a land far, far away. He might have been a sheltered prince easily pulled into fantasies he didn’t understand the consequences of.
The sun has long set and the stars above are just as crisp and clear as the clouds had been hours ago.
There’s a chill in the air that will never fully be erased, no matter how many layers Keiji might be able to pull upon himself. Because it’s not really in the air.
It’s under his skin. Burning cold that no manner of heat will overcome.
Yuutarou reaches out and grabs Keiji’s wrist with long fingers. Fingers that have danced down Keiji’s spine and across his throat. Finger that have chased the heat in his veins and left the bitter chill of autumn in their wake. Fingers that feel like branches scraping against his skin.
Keiji’s laugh echoes through the woods; he still doesn’t understand the consequences.
He’s starting to think that neither of them do.
Recap of Silver-White Valley
(no actual spoilers)
I’m finally deep enough in this AkaKinn (Ketchup/Mustard or Kirhard, or whatever you want to call Reinhard/Kircheis) ship that I’m watching LOGH Gaiden.
Episode 17 of Gaiden basically goes like this: Kircheis pledges his undying devotion, then Reinhard proposes marriage, and then at the end, it’s revealed that Reinhard's sister openly ships them too.
This is truly an amazing episode.
“for you to marry me that is...”
Reinhard gets the hint.
No pre-nups here.
