I Made Djirna
I Made Djirna, AKAH, 2023
I made Djirna is a Balinese artist residing in Yogyakarta. His most recent work AKAH was showcased as part of ARTJOG, a contemporary art show held in Yogyakarta.
I would classify this work as bricolage evident with all his recent artwork consisting of found objects, namely pumice stones he has collected for years. AKAH is an amalgamation of scavenged material in an attempt to honor the Balinese concept of "Akah" which alludes to the origins of an object. In this work, he facilitates an evolution of found objects, remnants of an origin that continues to grow in his studio.
Djirna's engagement with his heritage is palpable, the depictions of religious artifacts, like a shrine, or something that resembles a church mural is indicative of the ritualistic ambiance he was trying to achieve. The way this work is presented is incredible, I find myself unable to look away as it is lit in the most enchanting way, not to mention the soundscape that accompanies it. I hope to bring such theatrics into my upcoming work at the end of this course.
