Dictionary of Survival - Air Raids and Bombing Raids
The following rules apply in the event of an air threat:
Before and during the attack
-If air raids are expected, close shutters or blinds. Seal windows with transparent adhesive film and draw curtains.
-In the event of an air raid warning, immediately seek cover.
-In buildings, take your escape gear to a shelter.
-If no proper shelter or basement is available, seek shelter in the corners of the building or under doorways.
-Avoid staying near window openings. (Risk of splinters!)
-Stand under doorways in central walls, concrete walls, and load-bearing walls, or possibly seek shelter under a sturdy table.
-Tuck your head between your knees and protect your neck with your arms.
After the attack
-Remain in cover for a while after the all-clear.
-Beware of the smell of gas. Broken gas lines can explode!
-Don't live in the ruins (risk of collapse!), but build emergency shelters.
-Open cupboards carefully, as the contents may fall out.
