How many ordinary people have a chance actually go to a prison to see inmates’ life? Danny Lyon’s photography project “Conversations with the Dead” gives us the adventure. 

This piece is the combination of art and journalism. It is so artistic that I thought this setting was faked by the photographer when I saw it for the first time. Women’s old photos, a beautiful large flowers, cold cell bars, and the young man behind it with desperate and blue in eyes... It is a great work of new journalism. Danny Lyon spent 14 months in 1967-1968 photographing inmates,  building up telling and detail-packed portraits of the lives of those inmates inside the prison. 

Double Take - I Keep Curiosity

At this photo exhibition, I saw a lot of impressive photos about street photography.

Regarding Alex Webb, his photos have a strong color contrast, subtle and interesting composition.

The characters, streets, gestures, and shapes in his photos seem to be chaotic, but there is a sense of order that cannot be arranged.

And I can feel his way of seeing the world more introspectively; humor, irony, uncertainty, and curiosity.

He once said that he hopes the photo can ask questions instead of giving an answer.

This may make people think deeply when they look at the photos, which makes the viewers create a connection with the works.

Through the lens, I can see the living consciousness that exists on the scene, and the vitality under the color.

Double Take 1 - YUKA 

The first time seeing these two photographs, I just thought it was so strong and astonishing that a women gazes directly into the lens. The polarization of her clothes is also interesting. One fashionable, and the other traditional. 

However, when I read an article called “Zanele Muholi and the Women’s Mobile Museum” , I began to admire Zanele Muloni, the woman both in front of the camera and behind the camera. 

These two pieces are her self portrait. “What does it mean to photograph yourself?” She asked in a video for the PPAC, “You give yourself a voice.” Muloni uses her photography to articulate her political agenda, which speaks for the LGBTQ community in South Africa and human right more generally. 

How can we make a voice for ourselves? Photography/Self portrait is our weapon. 

“If we don not write a visual history that speaks to us, for us, no one will do it.” 

Vietnamese Girl’s Smile
