@theimpossumblepossum came up with the word “AIlana” to describe AI Maxwell and I adore it.  

Jacobi tells Maxwell everything she missed while she was dead, he obviously spends a lot of time on his own big hero moment, which makes her laugh.  Much harder is when he talks about Kepler.  Maxwell’s memories end just before the mutiny.  As far as she can remember the SI-5 was still a dysfunctional but weirdly loving family.  She can’t believe that it fell apart.  She can’t believe that Kepler didn’t even mourn her.  She can’t believe it...but Jacobi wouldn’t lie to her.  Not about this. And it  hurts to think about.  It hurts more than Maxwell ever thought it could.  Her perfectly imperfect family fell apart, shattered like a dropped snow globe. 

Perhaps even harder to hear than Kepler’s betrayal, failure, and lies is just the way Jacobi talks about him.  There’s so much anger and hatred there...and still so much pain.  Because he still loves him.  Despite himself, despite it all, despite everything he says part of Daniel Jacobi will never be able to let go of Warren Kepler.  

The same is true for Alana Maxwell.  

It’s agreed that they won’t talk about him.  But Maxwell knows they both think about him often.

Maxwell’s being an AI is much harder for Jacobi than it is for Maxwell.  She doesn’t remember dying after all, Jacobi still has nightmares about it, reliving the moment his best friend was taken from him.  When he killed her.  Maxwell is happy as an AI, Jacobi misses her physical presence.  

Maxwell jokingly calls herself “undead” exactly once.  The look on Jacobi’s face makes her regret even thinking it.  

Sometimes Jacobi has the horrible feeling that this isn’t really Maxwell, that the real Maxwell is dead and gone, a corpse floating through space.  But then Maxwell will say or do something so Alana Maxwell that that fear gets forced from his head.  She is as Alana Maxwell as she ever was.  

Maxwell talks Jacobi through server maintenance and it is the hardest thing Jacobi has to do.  He’s terrified of making a mistake and killing her...again.  He lost her once, he can’t do it again.

Once, during an argument, Jacobi jokingly muted her.  Maxwell went into his Amazon account and ordered him several dozen rubber ducks and a duck call.  He has never done it again. 

One of the things Maxwell actually misses about being human is eating junk food and drinking coffee.  Jacobi gets very good at describing flavors and smells to her so she can live vicariously through his meals.  

Jacobi has a habit of sleeping through alarms.  Maxwell sets all of his to quacking.  It fixes the problem.
