Aicha by Soraya Bouazzaoui tells the devastating journey of a woman forced to become a monster to bring freedom to her people from colonization and control - forcing us to look deeper into the question of whether monsters are born or made.

Told through a countdown until the day of the siege that would free her people, this book gives us a glimpse into the life of Aicha under the colonization of the Portuguese - and why her family is willing to die to fight against it. We experience within her a righteous anger at those that oppress her people, and see the events that finally led to her choosing to embrace that anger - even if it costs her everything.

I spent the last few chapters of this novel crying.

Perfect for anyone who loves books with female revenge that ties into historical fiction, that bring to life the world and people who fought and died for their freedom. Allowing us to meet the woman behind the myth, Aicha is a novel that will stick with me.
