Just finished Magnus Chase. And it only took me 6 days!!!! And DAMN IS IT AMAZING. People don't hype it up enough. For one, it is quite literally the funniest book Rick has written in my opinion. I caught my ass laughing so many times, and it felt so good. Magnus Chase is such a funny character. And overly sarcastic. And he is such a loser who can't fight for shit.
The best part about this book is how well written each character is. Aswell as how well written the plot is. With representation done in such a natural way, it feels normal. You can tell this book was calculated. Rick put actually thoughtfulness in it and it makes me so incredibly happy. He also captured Norse mythology in such a natural "yea this is a part of our nine worlds and life itself" that I wouldn't even doubt if I saw an elf out my window today. And you can easily tell the personality of each character without the book telling it to us.
I KNOW Magnus is a sweet boy who has so much love to give and is emotional but afraid of vulnerability and is anxious to show it to others even when he wants to out of fear of judgement. I know he LOVES his mom. I know he LOVES his friends. And I know he doesn't hold grudges on anyone. I know Hearth and Blitz mean a lot to eachother. By every sacrifice they made for eachother, every time they rushed to eachother, everytime they complimented eachother. I KNOW Sam and Magnus are close friends. Their dynamic is AMAZING. I know all four of them are "four empty cups" a family. I know Sam is passionate, strong, and determined. She CARES. She cares a lot, and sometimes she feels guilty or weak for caring for those who never seem to care for her back. I know Blitz is insecure in the fact he isn't typical. He isn't like other dwarfs and likes stuff like fashion. And I know there is a lot of hurt in Hearth because of how shit awful his parents were, and he has to carry the weight of their words everyday being disabled and a magic man. And how he feels unworthy. Most importantly, I love how they found the greatness in each other. And how much they carry each others weight. And make each other feel loved and seen and all that yogurt.
