Turkey’s top administrative court, the Council of State, on Friday annulled the 1934 decree by Ataturk’s government that turned Hagia Sophia from a mosque into a museum. The long-awaited ruling opens the way for Istanbul’s iconic Hagia Sophia to be converted into a mosque again.
Shortly after the Council of State announcement, hundreds to Turks started to gather outside Hagia Sophia and cheered demanding that it opens immediately for prayers.
The court reportedly based its verdict on the fact that the Hagia Sophia was a property of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation and registered to be used only as a mosque. The decision to grant a status of museum to the Hagia Sophia was given by former President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1934.
Agia Sofia will always be #Greek 🇬🇷

I don't usually do these kinds of posts. Not anymore. This is the blog I use to entertain myself and have fun. Mostly cartoons and light stuff. But this is so important. And so depressing.
I'm Greek.
Today the Turkish government and Erdogan decided to convert one of our most important churches "Agia Sofia" into a tzami. A place of worship for their religion.
The bells in my country have been ringing in sorrow since morning. It's the same sound you hear the day we mourn the death of Jesus Christ.
All this is happening while two days ago Turkish ships were getting ready to forcefully invade Kastelorizo, a small island in the Aegean sea and claim it for it's oil. Our ships came out in the sea ready to defend it and the other island's in case of the worst.
It's surreal what is happening right now. These are all acts of extreme provocation and disrespect.
Agia Sofia especially is a place of great historical importance as well that at the very least should be a museum. It stands on the former capital of the Byzantine Empire that was was conquered by the ottoman one. Its like Germany making a place where Jews were systematicly killed a flattering museum for Nazis. Only way worse cause worshipping Allah in a Christian Church is an active thing. And Turkey up to this day still denies the genocides it committed against Armenians, Pontiacs, and Christians in general. My grandma was from Pontos. Stories of massacres and rape are still fresh in my family's memory and many others. Converting Agia Sofia in this tense situation and not having admitted or apologized for the atrocities of wars of the past is really fucking disrespectful and shows not only a lack of remorse but basically pride for what they did.
Agia Sofia is a Greek heritage, having conquered these lands gives them no right to erase it!
In the life of each of us there is a place remote and islanded, and given to endless regret or secret happiness.
