It wasnât often that Ted dressed up, but today was a special occasion. Sure his idea of dressing up was âwearing a button up shirt and shoes that arenât Converseâ and he was in desperate need of a haircut, but he was making an effort. Thatâs what counted.
He made one last attempt at flattening his hair--failing miserably at it--before knocking on Emmaâs door. âSo,â he said, sticking his head in. âIf someone hypothetically had a surprise for you, would now be a good time to whisk you away to it?â

âI didnât touch him! I swear!â
âI mean, what?â
âHey Emma, you speak Korean, right?âÂ
[text] Why is there a guy in a SCUDS uniform crying about a chili recipe in the commons?
[text] You know, in this line of work we have to make some tough decisions.
[text] And sometimes youâre stuck having to be the person making those tough calls.
[text] ...how bad is he crying?

Ted had been up for hours, trying his best to be as quiet as humanly possible. He wanted to do something special for Emma for her birthday and had been secretly practicing in his momâs kitchen for the past few weeks to make sure it was perfect. He wasnât exactly known for being the best in the kitchen, so he felt he needed the extra time.
Eventually, he managed to create a whole breakfast spread without a single burnt item. He set up a small lap tray and began laying it all out: homemade cinnamon rolls and donuts, eggs, bacon, sausage, and fresh squeezed orange juice. Moving at a snailâs pace, he carried the feast into the bedroom, carefully kneeling down next to Emmaâs waking form.
âHappy birthday to you...â He sang softly as he leaned in to give her a kiss. âI made you breakfast.â

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AGENT MORRIS

Even though he and Emma didnât work in the same base anymore Sterling made sure he got up early and drove the hour long distance to to main NY base to set up everything for her on her birthday the night before. He hung a birthday banner above her desk and sprinkled confetti and string lights along the surface of it. Sitting in her chair was a small wrapped gift containing a pair of rainbow 187 roller derby knee pads and a card.Â
Happy Birthday, Emma Jean! Try not to beat anyone up too badly wearing your birthday present. Abby said these were good ones so Iâm just going to trust her judgement. I hope you have a fantastic day! Donât forget to look in the break room. There is cake. - E
Throughout his lifetime, one thing had always remained true about Ted: he slept like the dead. He was nearly comatose every single night, sleeping completely soundly until his alarm went off in the morning. It was as much of a part of him as his plaid shirts and Star Wars references.
And with a literal snap, that changed.
His nights became restless. His peaceful dreams turned into gut-wrenching nightmares. Heâd work himself to the brink of exhaustion, hoping that would help calm the night terrors, only to be proven wrong every single time. Looking back on all those years, he couldnât think of a single time he slept soundly. It was hard to want to go to bed when all you could see was dust. It was even harder to fall asleep when the one person you wanted to sleep next to was gone.
When everyone came back--un-blipped as he jokingly called it--he thought he could go back to who he was. In a way, he did. The jokes were easier to tell. The work was more fun to do. His soul was back in his arms. He thought that his nights would go back to normal as well. He was wrong.
Tonight, that darkness seeped back into his mind. His breathing became shallow, his body restless. As he tossed and turned, he began taking the sheets with him, yanking them off of his sleeping girlfriend.
