I have a hard time watching Nightfalls introduction. But at some point I'll buck up and get the cut of *just* what she says to Twilight in the rain.
We know she's mourning her chance to be next to him. To play the role she's so desperate to prove she's worthy of. Being *Twilight*'s wife.
But I wonder if it doesn't make him lonely. To have what must be his best student brush him off. She's the one always assigned to him. And sure part of that might be that Handler knows she's Twilights ultimate bodyguard. She Will bring him back, no matter the cost. But he doesn't know that. He just knows she's the one Handler keeps putting next to him. That for however many agents he's trained, she's the one he's gotten to keep.
It makes sense his core team is small. The less interaction with other spies the better for their safety. Plus a lot of the spies during the castle arc had definite hero worship going on. So he can't really be teamed up with just anyone. They can't risk him like that.
But she was his student. His trainee. Despite his closed off heart he cares for her. Just not in the way she wants.
'stay out of my way and don't slow me down'. What a sad thing to hear from your student. One you know is reckless and too driven for her own good. One you have told over and over to not. Slow down. You have to survive. You have to get home.
She won't accept his umbrella. She sees into his heart something real for his family, not her. Despite everything. Hasn't she proven she deserves to stand by his side?
There is love there. Just not the kind she wants. Not a shape they recognize. The umbrella is cover which she does not accept.
But he wanted to get her out of the rain.
