Iām now in season 7 of the xfiles and passed the Diana arc(?) and I have thoughts.
Iām going to come right out of the gate and be controversial. I feel bad for Diana.
Not the person in the show but for the frankly bland and sexist writing of her character.
I donāt like her character but I do think her character deserves better than to be a wet blanket of a plot device when creating Mulder and Scully drama.
Diana was in the xfiles! She held find them. She believes them as much as Mulder. Thatās interesting! That is a good character set up.
A fellow believer who finds and starts this department with Mulder who slowly got corrupted by it. (Which they tried to do on a shallow level) she could have been a cautionary tale about the dangers of obsession. I want her insane, betray and hurting anyone and everyone for a sliver of proof. I want her conniving and cunning. So far lost she doesnāt even care about Mulder anymore. I want her so far lost that she doesnāt even know what the truth is.
She could have really been written as a foil to Scully in a very interesting way. Showing how Mulder needs someone like Scully grounding and practicing to balance him and his theories out. I wish they contrasted Diana with scully by showing how dangerous a lack of questioning and push back is! Possibly through a mission they ( D& M) work together really together and have in end in disaster and pain around them, with Mulder looking in horror and Diana not caring. Diana could have exploration in how common ground doesnāt always lead to trust but instead competition and paranoia. She could have been as example of the trajectory of corruption not just in the government but in moral practices of their work.
Even if it wasnāt what I mentioned above her character still should have been fleshed out. We should have seen what she did to those abducted women in other countries instead of just told. We should have been able to seen if was if she ever grappled with the things she does or if she has become so callous she that she doesnāt even blink.
The firsts time i talked about her I said there was nothing real to write home about and I wonder if she thatās because she will become an Alex Krycek type character. The thing is, I wish she did! But Krycek in his first episode is far more interesting, he places stakes on Mulder and scullys dynamic by being Mulders new partner. He pretends to be who Diana was set up to be. A believer and supposed ally to Mulder who really is working for the wrong people. Krycek gets to be manipulative, he gets to pull strings and cause lasting consequences (he caused the fucking abduction arc which still affects the plot!) Krycek gets to be a through line, Diana barely even gets to be a plot point.
At the very least Diana should have shown up more consistently with more impact through the season instead of a few choice episodes and she gone.
Even her death is basically a footnote. She left scully all these clues to save Mulder because she didnāt want this to happen to him and knew that they would kill her for it. Thatās interesting! Hot take give me a Diana episode! Show me her breaking point, the moment where she decides Mulders life is more important than whatever mission she is apart of, I would have actually loved an episode where we see Diana leaving scully clues and playing both sides knowing itās going to kill her. Show me them killing Diana and her finally satisfied with her choices.
Her character is just so much wasted potential. And hereās the kicker I know this was done purposefully. I was watching some xfiles interviews and digest with Christ charter recently and he basically said they(the show) needed something to create tension between Scully and Mulder and other women does that. She is a sexual obstacles for Mulder and Scully to be jealous of. And that was pretty much the extent of her use.
Itās sexist and bad writing.
SHES A FUCKING SEXY LAMP! And that pisses me off because characters, especially women, deserve better than that!
So yeah I fell bad for Diana Fowley
