the build-up was nearly killing him, but that was his own fault; he could never find the inner strength to truly express how he felt. it was the holidays, after all, the time when he was supposed to be fully honest. yet the words didn't dare come off his lips. he was hopelessly and stupidly in love with them, but parts of him were conflicted about whether they would even feel the same. their words kept bouncing around in his mind, and with the New Year's bash date looming—the one they always attended together—he could feel his heart getting heavier. they were going with someone else and he really didn't know how to process that correctly. "It's fine. It's completely fine." the words came out, but he knew they were a lie. it was not fine, not even close, but he couldn't dare say that out loud, although he feared the expression on his face was giving him away.
