Sorry to bother you but it's prom in a couple days and I'm not going because I have chronic anxiety. There's an afterprom at my friend's house and I want to go so I don't miss out completely and the only people there would be me and 6 close friends but I'm still terrified to go. I've barely seen them since February and even at school I've been holing myself up in classrooms alone at break times. I'm worried they won't want me there/have forgotten about me/don't like me anymore. Any advice?
Iβm sure this has already happened by now, and I donβt know what your decision ultimately was, but either way, itβs okay to do whatever feels right for you. If you feel able to go to a social event, great, but if you know youβre not going to enjoy it because youβll be horribly anxious the whole time, itβs okay not to go.
Do your friends know about your anxiety? If they donβt know the details, it might be a good idea to tell them, so that they understand why it might seem like youβre avoiding them. Itβs unlikely that theyΒ βdonβt like you any moreβ, especially if youβre still being invited to things like this afterprom party, but they might be confused and upset if you continue to avoid them without explaining why.
If youβre not already receiving professional help, then I recommend you do so. Talk to your doctor, or contact mental health services, charities or therapists in your area. If you are already receiving professional help, thatβs great, and I hope that youβre able to talk to a therapist about this issue. Maybe being able to spend time with your friends again is a good goal to start working towards.
