Sam, the SBC's Director, took a personal interest in our tour from the outset and helped us design a first-rate, tailored itinerary, which spoke to my family's differing interests in birds and other wildlife (and our lack of expertise!). The SBC guide was excellent - passionate and very knowledgeable bout the subject matter, able to identify birds with admirable ease and at quite some distance. The SBC also made good use of a local expert around Lake Baringo - a must if you're set on seeing some of the rarer and harder-to-spot species (he helped us to see night jars and Scops owls up close). The SBC ensure the tour was accessible to everyone in our group throughout - techy birding jargon was kept to a minimum. This was essential pre-requisite for us since not everyone in the group was a committed birder, and Sam and the SBC team were more than happy to oblige. It wasn't all about birds either - we did some great mammal spotting in Nakuru national park too (lions, white rhino...). The SBC also secured us high quality accommodation at a reasonable price (they offer a range of options to suit tastes and price brackets). We particularly appreciated the value the SBC places on sustainability, principally through its partnerships with local wildlife organisations and its use of local talent and expertise. After a beautiful morning walk in Karura Forest, we managed to spot these two gems. First we saw a beautiful emerald Klaas's Cuckoo, which is a brood-parasite of sunbirds, favouring the Collared Sunbird. Then we came across a stunning Hartlaub's Turaco, which are poor fliers due to their canopy lifestyle, where they rarely descend to the ground. Standing at over a metre tall, the large yet elegant Grey Crowned Crane graces Kenya's wetlands. They are considered to be “living fossils” among cranes, having flourished around 38 million years ago and even surviving the ice age! They also have one of the most unique mating rituals in the bird kingdom where pairs hop and jump gracefully with each other with their wings spread. Then if the female is happy with the males Fred Astaire impersonation, they will copulate. Unfortunately, this incredible bird is listed as endangered due to degradation of wetland areas throughout Africa.
