Social Anxiety and Extending Your Comfort Zone
This is a habit you can embrace within seconds, or rather – an everyday challenge. Each day, do something you’ve never done before. Or something you don’t remember doing, or something you tried and failed, but wanted to succeed at.
You want to work continuously on expanding your comfort zone, because this is crucial when getting rid of your social anxiety. I know it sounds a bit overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. A tiniest achievement keeps on being an achievement.
For example, if you’re afraid of eating outside, or it makes you really uncomfortable – get a bag of nuts and eat a few as a snack while walking down the street. Probably nobody will even notice, but you’ll have this little achievement. The next day you could get a coffee to go, and a cone of ice cream after that.
If you’re always seeking a place to hide when you blush, the next time it happens, try to direct your focus away from the blushing, pay attention to your breath and once that’s done think about something else.
If you’re terrified of looking strangers in the eyes, make it a goal to maintain eye contact with one random person walking down the street for 2 seconds. The next day you might try it with two people, and the next with three, if you feel comfortable enough, etc.
You get where I’m going with this. What are your strongest insecurities, what do you feel should be dealt with most urgently? Once you get that clear, look for a way through which, with the least possible (but still present) discomfort, you could approach it.
