A 1:100 model of the church was constructed, accompanied by a series of scaled granite panels with different thicknesses and shapes. The aim of the model was to deduce what the limitations (and opportunities) of using granite as a “window” in allowing light to pass through. By doing these controlled tests I was able to rationalize the correct distribution of granite in each panel to allow a suitable amount of light whilst maintaining structural stability. Consequently, I was able to incorporate the most appropriate panel in my design allowing my spaces to achieving the initial goal of creating a unique experience involving light. Here I could clearly see the positive impact prototyping had upon my architectural design.
Ground Floor Plan of the Terminal showing where granite is used differently as G1 and G2.
This building as a whole represents technical study 2 (Thermal Insulation).
1:1000 Site Masterplan
The two areas of technical focus are indicated on plan (1 as THE CHURCH and light transparency) and (2 as THE TERMINAL and thermal insulation). Also, the 3 areas of where granite is used differently in the design are shown as G1, G2, and G3.
