The word love drops from Jack’s lips perhaps far too easily, but always, always as a noun or pet name. Perhaps it was picked up from Odette or she picked it up from him or either of them picked it up from some affectionate nanny somewhere along the way. Reg made it worse. (If you haven’t heard “love” in a Welsh accent, you’re missing something marvelous.)

As to the phrase itself, he’s a bit too English for that. The verb makes him uneasy, as it’s quite unreliable. Candle in a hurricane, that. Your family loves you until they don’t. Your editor loves your work until he doesn’t. The only person Jack has said it to other than Odette (for whom it is said early and often) is Nadja. She handled him coming out to her so well that the words just kind of came out.

He never said it to Reg, and he has tried very hard to not regret it, tells himself that Reg knew, or that it wasn’t quite that. 

Maelie let out a soft chuckle, shaking her head. “It was nothing romantic... I was twelve years old, and a friend of mine was teasing me... he and our other friend, you see, had both already had their first kisses, and I had not. And out of complete fury, I leaned forward, pressed my lips to his, and promptly started giggling. More a childish game, than a real kiss.”

All the time. Haven’t you? It’s the truest act of love.

Here’s the thing about lies, kid. They’re easier to track if they aren’t lies at all. Or if they’re not yours. It depends. Either way, the less you say, the more they make up, and the less you have to remember.
