My only choice, if I wish to keep him alive, if I wish to keep him safe as I promised his wife, is to lie. The promise I made her, so fleeting and casual, has in the past few hours taken on the strength of an oath in my mind, unbreakable. I swore to a woman who is now dead that I would look after her husband, ‘keep him safe’, and now I feel the burden of the promise I made so lightly.
