Aerion is sent to Lys after the trial of Seven - but what is supposed to be a punishment, turns out to be the chance of a lifetime. To start fresh. People might look at him weird in Lys, too, but for different reasons. It's more of a friendly curiosity about the dragonborn than anything else. Nobody there really knows him. Nobody has actually wittnessed the trial. People do not dislike him per default. That doesn't mean he's suddenly nice now. I imagine there's lots of mean pranks going on and whoring. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But he actually finds people one could call friends - even if they're not exactly nice either. And although he would never admit it to his father, he likes it there. When one night, very drunk, he is about to drink wildfire because he thinks it might turn him into a dragon, someone will stop his hand. People will actually care. All the more horrifying then that he is called home again at some point. "Home" - where people hate him, where people have not forgotten - where they whisper so loud he can hear them... Where he may or may not turn back into his old self.
