It's gonna stay a sketch because otherwise I'd never finish it. Also, this drawing is made as if AEJ actually finished (I never finished the story, but the ending is available via the epilogue/epitaph) and Lapse's design based upon the God portraits I did, available under under the aej tag.
All the Error's (minus Template, Errored, and Strings) are from my various series. Also finally nailed a design for cocoa lol, been having trouble drawing him for his series tlato (the lonely and the one).
Snippets of all the Error's stories and a bonus screenshot will be under the cut.
Cocoa -> my current/most recent series, The lonely and the one (only on ao3, although the og chapters are on tumblr) - Error is a lonely and near forgotten god, a terrifying myth that has been left behind even by his eternal enemy. But one hasn't forgotten, and has been waiting his whole life to meet Error.
Strings and Glitch ->Â Double Stitched (Rewrite)Â - Trust me rewrite is way better than the OG fanfic, Glitch accidentally ended up in a swapped universe, what will happen with this new chance heâs been given?
Survivor/Viver ->Â Putting Together Savorless Decisions (PTSD)Â - Short, but wholesome, nice hurt/comfort with a different take on the Ink and Error relationship
Ru -> I should - More Nightmare focused, still enjoyable and a different take on Nightmare with a more poetic one shot that evolved into a short story.
Star -> The Hidden Star - Ink cheats on Error, and overall chaos ensues. Started off with the idea of ink being a "wolf in sheep's clothing" but it evolved a lot.
Edwin and Neil -> The King and His Aid (Season 1) Nightmare is heir to the throne, and must find a queen, but he doesnât want a queen, he just wants Edwin (Season 2) With a new start, what will happen? Who will they meet? Whoâs Gene?
Balance -> From Memories to Trees - Also started as a one shot, much more extreme takes on opposite ends of the spectrum for Dream and Nightmare mixed with some internal problems and alternate beginnings.
Lapse & Chronic -> An Errorâs Journey - Errorâs been having these weird dreams⌠How does it affect his family and how will it change everything around him? Started as a headcanon story for Errorâs past and now is a 12 page plot doc with the series at 100K+ words. If you want a very slow burn story full of world building that pulls out at all stops for everything with a focus for the small details, I strongly recommend reading it.
And the bonus screenshot because Neil and Edwin are too fuckin cute and need their own panel

Fair warning, according to google docs this is 17,713 words long (although 11,975 words are from the "fun things" doc, which is list of what things mean or random shit from nearly all the chapters). This is a complete compilation of everything I have AEJ. Thoughts, notes, hidden/unpublished docs and drafts.
In October of 2022, I posted a passing thought of âIf I don't pick AEJ back up by the end of the year, I'll release what the following 20ish chapters would've been and the plans after/the full unredacted fun things.â After several months wait, here is the Epitaph/Epilogue of An Errorâs Journey.
To begin, this huge project started with the idea of Error reliving his past lives through dreams or reboots. It was planned to end after he remembered everything, and wouldnât go further than the curiosity of how reliving the trauma of his past lives would affect him as Error. I didnât plan for it to go much farther than that, but it quickly expanded to something more.
As it currently stands, the end goal of the series was for XGaster to return, kill essentially everyone aside from our main five and a few others, and for the lesson of the story to be about mortality and to be thankful for it. The mistake Error had made was to restart, over and over with overwrite. The only way for the cycle to stop was for Error and in turn, the main five to be happy with what they have, instead of wishing for what was.
The story of AEJ truly starts in UnderVerse. After Error destroys half the universe, Core takes Overwrite and begins experimenting to avoid the X-event all together, and eventually, starts to experiment for the perfect/best lives the multiverse could have. Over these trials and many timelines, Core grows more insane, however there is one staple that I have mentioned in series several times.
One experiment, Core switched the roles around. Creating Pale and Template as well as the other swapped personalities for Nightmare and Dream. While it was unsuccessful, Core does grow closer to Template, and Template through the timelines helps Core figure out better ways for everyone to live.
Core continues on from there to what we know as AEJ. Also, if you havenât pieced it together, the old friend Core talks so highly of to Error and Chronic is Template.
Swerving off course of what Iâve been talking about so far, Chronic is actually the original story I had planned, a few details aside. Minus the fusion, Chronic Error is the original story, Error going through life and reliving old lives with no more than Ccino to call a friend. Originally, Error was going to die and Nightmare would give up one of his souls, hence the shadow figure. Also, Chronic was not meant to be a permanent character, and was meant to be future Error directing past Error, but that was scrapped for what we have now, which I argue is a far better plot, and Chronicâs plot allowed for me to bring our main five closer together and give a support as to why its the five of them out of all people.
For what the following chapters would be, Error would be able to go to the outsider as Error and Lapse would fade to simply a nickname, although Error would adopt Mode as his last name. Sci would come into the story more to openly spend time with Nightmare and build that parental relationship with Nightmare and to build relationships with Error, Dream, Ink, and Reaper. Then Heartâs and Blueâs wedding. Then problems with the AUs would arise, AUs going dark/dead and the main five would learn officially of the balance. The small group that I mightâve briefly mentioned when the peace treaty was happeningâI honestly canât rememberâwould return in uproar about the balance, but the star council would take care of them. Finishing off the rising action of the story.
The Climax starts with the balance beginning to feel off so the gods (main five and reapertale) agree to meet. Ink proposes that it could be XGaster, and the hunt begins. They return to the gang and explain things to Cross, who currently holds overwrite, and Killer joins as well. The chapters follow with them as a group searching for XGaster before splitting apart, Nightmare and Error together, Reaper and Ink, Dream with Cross and Killer. A chapter of each groups journeys. Nightmare and Error reinstate their bond, Reaper and Ink take some time to be vulnerable, and Dream can indirectly grow closer to Nightmare and Error by learning about them through Cross and Killer.
The following Iâve pulled directly from the plot doc: A sudden quake startles the whole multiverse, Xtale Gaster comes back. All the Gods meet again, and confirm that they all felt the quake. The small group interrupts the meeting, XGaster in shackles behind them. Two of them are holding Cross, Killer and Cobalt. They brag about killing Horror, Dust, Hearts, Blue and Ccino. They even kill off Sci. XGaster shatters all their soulsâaside from Cobalt who merely falls into a glitching mess. He has overwrite once more. XGaster turns on the small group, and begins his terror, stealing from so many universes, rebuilding his perfect world. They (main five) fight XGaster and reaper takes his soul to the afterlife.
Then thereâs a bittersweet conclusion of our fiveâs lives after the fact and how things have changed (Also pulled from doc): It also takes many weeks for them to heal. Ink and Death were the only ones to go undamaged by the war. Error nearly died on the field (not in doc, but plans were for Error to take one of Nightmares souls, and to live from then on as a semi-physical shadow) and Nightmare + Dreams arms were too shattered to repair. Ink makes himself another pair of arms to tend to the others. Error hands off the Cafe to Sydney, and closes the clothing business. Intent joins them, wanting to support Error. Dream and Ink step back from the Stars Sansâ and Star Council, leaving things in the hands of Cobalt. It becomes routine for them, all waking up together in a heap in Nightmareâs bed. Dreamâs the first up, going around the mansions a few times for a morning workout. Error and Nightmare are next, Nightmare getting in the shower as Error gets started on coffee for all of them. Killer got Dream addicted and now he canât function well in the morning without it. After Nightmareâs done in the shower, he cooks breakfast as Error getâs in. Reaper and Ink are the last awake, and both drink plenty of coffee.Intent stays with them, their unofficially adopted child. Error and Ink no longer fight, they do very much the opposite. Ink helps breakdown AUs sometimes and Error occasionally helps Ink with AU ideas. Nightmare and Dream donât fight anymore either. They go out together to balance out AUs and try to keep as many of them as possible balanced. That way, aside from AUs whose story lines surround the fact that they're the best/worst place, they won't ever worry about tipping, and theyâll all prosper. Reaper still works the same, but still feels terribly guilty for taking the souls of his lovers friends. Everytime he gets home, he is always greeted with love, cuddles, and reassurance. So much time has passed since the Great War, itâs literally become history. Reaper, Dream, Nightmare, Ink, and Error are all seen as Legends. Bards tell the tale of the Great War and what happens when you question the Gods, they also tell of the days when Immortal and Mortal worked in harmony, itâs such a funny sight to see when they go out in disguise.
And finally, the very last chapter: On the 1,000 anniversary of the Great War, they return to the battlefield. They visit the many shrines in their honor. They visit the shrines to Horrorâs, Dustâs, Killerâs, Crossâ, Blueâs, Heartsâ, Sciâs, and Ccinoâs deaths. Core suddenly appears, and overwrite is in their hands, offering them the choice to do things over again. Nightmare, Ink, Dream, and Death are excited for the possibilities. Bring back the gang, all the lives lost... Bring back Cross. Error stops them. He is the only one of them that has lived a (nearly) full mortal life. Error gives the button back. To overwrite their lives is to overwrite mortality. They savored their time. Mortality is a blessing, and now they will live the cost of a happy end, the curse of immortality. They deny. Core smiles, â Good, it took a lot of overwrites, but you didnât make the same mistake.â Error asks what Core will do now that they fixed their mistake. "I can finally die. I can overwrite my code and my code alone to finally be mortal. To finally finish my long long life." Core turns, and with a happy smile they say, "After all, nearly a million is a good enough time to live. Isn't it?"
Itâs very much bittersweet, but I feel itâs a fitting ending. However, it doesnât quite end Coreâs story, and so there were bare bone plans for Core.
In my oneshots/ideas doc for AEJ, I have two things listed out for Core. First was a bonus chapter of Core watching over the team with Chronic that had the following planned dialogue:
âTemplate would be proud.â
â...I know.â
âWhat to do now?â
â...That is what I canât decide.â
âItâs time you lived for yourself, Core.â
âThen what of this multiverse?â
âThere are five great leaders to keep an eye on things, rest, enjoy your last years. Be it with lovers or friends. Let me take over this.â
â...Yeah, Iâll⌠Iâll go do that.â
âIâll keep a good eye on other me for ya, the least I could do.â
The second was the basic plot for âThe Core of the journeyâ, which would go through coreâs life, and finally give them their happy end: The first time Core rewrote the multiverse. The first time someone took overwrite from Core. The first time someone killed Core. Meeting Template. Meeting Chronic. After AEJ, Chronic directs them to a specific AU, and drops them off there. Chronic leads Core to a shack in the middle of the woods, a simple place that would serve well for living out their last years. Chronic directs them outside to see the garden, and Core opens the door to see Template. Template turns to them with a smile, and Core practically bursts into tears. Template cautiously comes over and holds their hands as Chronic explains: When Error was first getting his memories, Chronic was exploring the megaverse to find the abandoned timeline that held Template (since every time a overwrite happens, it in theory branches off of the previous multiverse, creating a new one and leaving behind the old.) Chronic explained who they were and what Core was doing, and that when it was all done and over, they wanted to give Core a happy end. Template happily agreed. Templateâs multiverse had long since been all but dessertedâmost everyone died because of XGaster, with just a few left, Template included.
There was one last âplannedâ thing, a longer oneshot similar to âWe knowâ for AEJ called âTemptationâ that would slowly go through the innerworkings of each Chronic, starting off from a quote from Chapter 80. While I didnât finish it, I did write 1K words for it. Enjoy the unfinished draft:
[FROM CHAPTER 80]
â...Why are you pulling away?â Error eventually spoke, just getting straight to the point. Chronic tensed, and for the first time, he watched as they stuttered through their thoughts.
âI⌠we⌠stars. Dear, weâŚâ Chronic seemed to practically deflate.
We canât. Thereâs too much temptation.
He manipulated their shadows, moving a wing rise from the darkness to embrace Error. We donât have to. Why canât we just be near them? Just be close to them?
No. We canât. We canât risk it. Not a second time.
âŚThat was an accident. We didnâ know any better, ya know that.
But, what about our souls? Itâll hurt them⌠None of us would be able to stand it! We barely got along without them in the first few centuries!
Dear⌠Iâm afraid Iâll have to agree. We would have eternity, and eternity means we will inevitably fall to temptation. We have already done too much and pushed too many things⌠we werenât supposed to meet Error as early as we did.
Please, just a chance. Or at least explain it to them! Errorâs been sitting there, waiting for us to say something!
â--
Oh, how eternity is cruel. His life has been long, the second longest in the multiverse, and the longer he lives the more he understands Core. The rest of the fusion still grasps at it, trying to hold the rivers of understanding that heâs learned.
Of course, Core has never gone into details with them, but over time they have heard of the important aspects. What shaped Coreâs goal, what changed Core, what fastened their resolve and broke down the hope they had left for their own happy end. The small pieces were far from enough to tell Coreâs full story, but it was enough to try to sympathize.
And in Chronic Errorâs case, enough to empathize.
His small soul shard hurts double now. In the first moments of their fusion, it was still painful from losing Ccino. The hours, days, weeks and months even that he had confided in them. The long hours of baking, talking, and playing with the cats. At times, when he steps back and just relaxes in the recesses of their headspace, he can imagine being back behind the counter with him again. Stuffing their faces with marshmallows while the smell of medium roast drifts around, the heat from baking warming them, and the cats curled up at the foot of the oven.
At times, he wished he took the time to spend time with this new Ccino, but this wasnât just his body anymore. Other times, he finds acceptance in not connecting with the Ccino, because the end would just hurt even more.
Sometimes, when everyone else is exhausted from caring for the balances or fronting to deal with whoever they need to, heâll find himself in the shadows of the cafe. Not during the busy hours of the morning, but the late of the afternoon. The sunset casting the walk in front of the shop in pink and purple light. If Ccino ever noticed they were there, they didnât mention it, but Chronic Error would never make a fuss over a marshmallow tossed their wayâand Ccino being dramatic about accidentally dropping it.
For now, they just hoped that Ccino thought he was Nightmare and that this one didnât have memories of the past.
His shared hurt being so close to Error too. A stark reminder of his past ignorance and self-hate. Perhaps a reminder that he hasnât fully moved past all of that either.
Error acts as a constant reminder of his⌠their mistake and what they lost. Something they can never regain. They will never be whole again. No matter how close they are itâs never going to be enough, and the farther away the more they want to be closer.
He knows the moment they hold Error in their arms, the dam will break.
They cut it far too close when they let him go. Holding his hands in theirs, he just wanted to pull Error closer. Promise that things will turn out okay, hold them and cut off the world until Error was ready- but they had to follow Coreâs plan. Error had to know of their mistake and who they were. Who they always have been.
He couldnât imagine how Chronic Dream and Nightmare had felt, holding Dream close that night so long ago. Itâs probably why their resolve to pull away is so strong. The temptation sitting in their arms, and the painful knowledge that they would have to let go.
He and the rest of the fusion find solace with Core. Knowing of the pain of their loss. That fateful Error OVERWRITEs upon OVERWRITEs ago. They never hear a distinct name, as he along with the rest of his cast had apparently gone through many over all the multiverses, but from the stories they think it to be an Error of some variation.
They hear about the variants good deeds, the hours they spent pouring over research with Core. How they were the one to help Core make leaps in figuring out how to end this. Finish off XGaster once and for all.
They can feel the pain and remorse Core holds when they talk of the variant. How much they must miss the soul. How much they must wish they could go back, even if it meant the multiverse ended in ruin.
They do their best to help, but even their mixed powers stand no match to the life times of pain they hold.
â--
He understands the others, he does, but he knows where this path leads. Pushing away the ones you love never works. They watched Error do it, and somehow Chronic Nightmare and Dream are convinced that this is the only way? Itâs laughable. Not at them of course, he loves them to deathâno pun intended.
The temptation is there, yes, of course, but itâs nothing to the paramount loss that would be his life, their life without their souls. Their poor souls. Thirsting their whole lives only to get a taste centuries in, to finally have Chronic by themâonly to disappear. Itâs pointless pain.
He doesnât want to live life in regret like theyâve seen so many others. Even in Core. They see the small moments, where Core regrets everything theyâve done. The weight cracking them further. And they canât do anything but sit and hold Core.
And now, the final documents I have that essentially hold all the secrets and inner workings of AEJ. The following excerpts are entirely in bold, if it is not bold it is a comment from as I write this rather than when itâs from.
AEJ Loose Ends
Cobalt never found his brother after the incident. His papyrus is missing and presumed dead, hence why Honey and Blue took him in and later Hearts took him in as a brother in-law.
Cobaltâs brother was left in the AU, and the AU slowly demolished until it became a part of the void. Cobaltâs brother was drifting in the void and was killed in there by XGaster. So yes, by storyâs end, Cobaltâs Papyrus is dead-the void is funky about time so I donât think itâd be appropriate to say exactly when Paps died.
Chronic also has a title, but because they run so many districtsâhaving the powers of destruction (code), the emotional realm, the dream realm, creation, and deathâthey have less of a âGodâ title and more of a higher title as âThe Gatekeeperâ. They protect the multiverse from the surrounding megaverse and also protect the inside of the multiverse as well. They were the one to keep everything going while the main five were hardly taking care of their balance. The balance shouldâve tipped far more than it actually didâbut he let it go a little bit to grow connections between the others. Once it was clear they were ready to handle the responsibility they began to let go of the balances and see how well they could take it.
Pretty much every time Chronic and Error were together, I mentioned them being the same person. From Chronicâs bad jokes of âbeing two halves of a wholeâ to them being âtwinsâ in chapter 65. The twins thing is actually really clever when you think about it, since twins came from the same egg and Chronic and Error came from the same soul, or, more accurately, Error came from one of Chronicâs souls. Iâm surprised no one questioned it, but I mentioned it so much that I practically normalized the thought in the readerâs mindâthat and I donât think people expected Error to technically not be an Error but only part Error.
The reason I focused on intent so much throughout the AEJ is because of the POV. Error isnât fully Error in AEJ. He has pieces of Chronicâs magic and it has made him far more sensitive to otherâs intent. He reads it not only as code but the same way Nightmare and Dream read it. Itâs actually a major hint of his ties to Chronic and itâs something no one has seemingly ever questioned. Iâve never in my works emphasized intent as much as I have in AEJ, every character interaction relates to it. Errorâs power to reach out and feel the aura of their power, feel the intent they give off. It can be written off as God powers⌠if I wasnât sticking as close to canon Error as I have been (for the most part). In the prequel to AEJ âThe Core of the Journeyâ I will once again change the writing to style to change to how Core sees and feels the world. How they feel and see it, however, will be left to the âLoose Endsâ of that story. (Sadly wonât happen)
Cobalt never fully explained what happened to the stars, at most he spoke of the antivoid and being stuck there. He never explained what caused him to be thereâor that he was forcibly taken. The Stars only knew that Cobalt got stuck in the antivoid and had to deal with the voices for years before he managed to get out, and that Error had destroyed his world before that. While this was far after Error became the self proclaimed God of Destruction/ God of code, Cobalt is the first survivor of Errorâs. From then on Error got much sloppier with destroying. The reason Omega/the Stars arenât sure of this is because of Chronic and the amount of time Cobalt spent in the antivoid. Chronic left survivors in their wake often, and some caught glimpses of the shadow. When Error appeared and was seemingly the only one with world destroying capabilities people simply assumed it was always Error. Error of course doesnât put this together, and Core stays silent on the matter.
The chess analogy:
This is not based on the names of the pieces, but rather how they move and their roles.
White pieces go to Xgaster, Xtale characters, as well as Core. This is because they move first. They were the people to start this megaverse and the conflict that keeps it going.
White King: Core, limited movement but also the second most free of all the pieces. It is not limited by direction but by how far. In this scenario, our White King is rebellious and acts against the queen. Yes, it couldâve killed immediately (donât fight me on this, yes kings can kill pieces just not other kings, look it up.) But it didnât, it hesitated and it gave the queen the chance to move impossibly far away and out of reach. Core couldâve stopped this all immediately, but they didnât know the consequences of the hesitance and it cost the multiverse. Core has the same ability as XGaster, the same movement, but XGaster was clever and made sure no one would be able to use OVERWRITE against him, thus limiting Coreâs movement.
White Queen: XGaster (XG), free movement as long as no one stands in the pieceâs way. Sound familiar? Thatâs the long and short of why.
White Knight: Cross. Clever usage can make this piece unstoppable, although it is hard to plan with, moving in a small âLâ shape but able to jump over other pieces. Much like Coreâs White King, this White Knight is rebellious, and acts as an additional Black Knight. Cross is a major key in AEJ, he holds OVERWRITE while Error works through his shit and he has to have the right environment and be on Coreâs side by the end otherwise its game over. Cross is a trained soldier from childhood and over the resets has lived for nearly just as long as Core. Some resets he has his memories, others he doesnât.
White pieces (Bishops, Knights, Rooks, and pawns): The characters of XTALE + The idiots of the cult. Xtale are the Bishops, Knights, and Rooks, the idiots are the pawns.
Black pieces go to Error, his team, as well as the main recurring/supporting characters.
Black King: Chronic, limited movement but similar to the Queen. In the series Chronic is more powerful than Error, yes, however, while able to defeat XG, they die in the processâthus needing to restart the multiverse. Error was able to defeat XG without killing his whole team in the process, only taking a few of Nightmareâs souls and being able to live on to tell the tale. This is some fucked up logic yes and I can go in depth of why this isnât exactly true, but itâs 2am and Iâm not doing that. (I honestly canât remember the thinking behind this)
Black Queen: Error, free movement as long as no one stands in his way. Error is by far the most powerful(Chronic aside) in his multiverse. He's not just a destroyer, but the god of Code. He has free reign to fix or dismantle whatever AU he choses. If Chronic and Core did not fill in the roles, Error would have the say of the barriers of his multiverse, AUs Creators or characters from other multiverses. His one draw back is his emotions, not in a oh donât cry way. Because he is a split soul from a fusion his powers hold some properties of Nightmare, Dream, Death, and Ink. In this particular multiverse, he powers are closely resemble Nightmare and Dreamâbeing able to feel out other souls and sense the intent from them as well as having his powers fueled by emotion. His drawback is that its not fueled by others emotion but his own. Nightmareâs and dreams emotions merely sway if their magic is more pure or corrupted, Errorâs emotions mix with his determination, fueling his magic. When he is not determined or letting his emotions flow like his magic, it sputters and fails. Once that barrier is out of the way, he is unstoppable.
Black Bishops: Both of these go to Nightmare and Dream. They act together but opposite, because of the even spacing on the board despite being on either side of the king and queen they are on opposite colors of the board. Their moves cannot cross, and they are both stuck moving only diagonal. However, it doesnât mean theyâre not powerful. Even having one at the end of the game is highly useful, and both together can effectively result in a stalemate or checkmate. Nightmare and Dream are constantly considered completely opposites in the fandomâyet somehow still alike. In AEJ I took that many steps further, they embody the unexpected and expected. Dream with dark thoughts but a people pleaserâeven at his own expense. Nightmare who secretly just wants everyone around him to be happy, but at heart and soul knows that his role is to spread negativity, and he will spread it in whatever way works best for the moment.
Black Knight: Death. In AEJ Reaper is unique. He is quiet and soft spoken, but his words leave impact. However, he hides this softer side behind a cocky and joking facade. Heâs unexpected and quietly calculating and hard to plan where he will move. Coreâs lost many a run due to the unpredictability of the mighty Grim Reaper.
Black Rook: Ink. The rook is also unique, unlimited reach like the queen but limited to only vertical and horizontal movements, and can be used like a queen except for certain situations. Ink is in a similar high status as Error, only limited due to Chronic and Error. Heâs powerful with the drawback of unpredictable and unfocused raw creativity. Think of a paint gun, (I have no idea where I pulled this from either) it will shoot, but you have no idea if its a short range splash shot of chaos or the perfect long shot that will target and stay targeted on who you shot at. The rook is unpredictable because of the range of movement it has, it could move one space or across the board. Having this piece at the end of the game might as well be having a second queen.
Black Pawns: Killer, Horror, Dust, Hearts, Cobalt, and Blue. When you play chess, by the end of the game all of your pawns are usually gone. They will sacrifice themselves or die by your opponent's hand for the sake of progression. But, like Cobalt, sometimes one or two can survive, and they will watch the board from a distance.
AEJ âRulesâ
In An Errorâs Journey, by the end it's out in the open that Core has lived through a lot of overwrites. Even to the point of nearly being a million. Although I havenât gotten to, and didnât find a need to explain why, in detail that is, they had to live to a million. Some of it is explained in the fun facts, sure, but not truly explained.
AEJ, in technicality, is a Megaverse.
AEJ branches from Underverse, while itâs long since been disconnected in nearly every conceivable way possible, it is connected still. Core, after Error destroyed half the multiverse, took overwrite into their hands for a better end. This is hinted at in chapter 33 when Core said: âWell, my options were to live with only half the multiverse and attempt to make things good in a war-stricken world where everyone was insane or too naive to do much of any help⌠or change the multiverse for the better.â
Everytime Core overwrites the multiverse, it creates a new multiverse and pulls Core into it, leaving the old one behind. Since itâs a new multiverse in addition to the original multiverse, it does technically make AEJ as we know it a Megaverse.
The reason it took so many resets is because overwrite is somewhat unpredictable for Core. They didnât make it, XGaster did. Each time Core uses it there is a small chance of a lot of things to happen. For example, there is a small chance of Nightmare being trans. If Nightmare is trans, it increases everyone elseâs chances of being trans. Everyone has different variables and chances for it, with Nightmare Ink Cross Killer and Blue with the highest chances in that order.
Also, there is a chance of what Core personally dubs âCreators rulesâ in the multiverse. âCreators rulesâ are simply the Alternate Multiverses with âsoulmate AUsâ in place, the kinds where your soulmateâs or soulmates name shows up on your body. âCreators rulesâ can also be things like those Tik Tok skits, your eyes dictate your power level-or as Core mentioned in chapter 50 âif all my promises were a mark on my body, I wouldnât have any skin left.â Core knows that because it-the Creator rule of all their promises showing up as a mark on their body-happened a dozen or so timelines ago.
Off track from the main premise of this, Core having a mark of each of their promises on their body-and the fact that theyâd have so many marks it would cover their body, brings implications that I love that I donât think anyone has bothered to think about. Even as the Creator of AEJ, I like to think that the implication ties heavily with a line Core said a little before in the same chapter: âAt least, you will be able to live a happy life. A life far greater than you couldâve imagined for yourself.â. Core has promised previous versions of everyone a better life. Core promised themself a better life. Specifically, Core still promises Error a happy ending-while indirectly they have promised it. Telling Hearts to give Error hope, to tell him over and over he would get a happy ending. Core saying âhold him to his promisesâ isnât holding Hearts to his promises, itâs asking Error to remind Core to keep striving for that happy end. Itâs emphasized over and over Core is slowly but definitely surely going insane from all of this, they have to hold onto hope-just as they have told Error to. A lot of their promises are projecting themself onto Error.
Whoever rewrites the multiverse is no longer attached to it. Hence why Core canât simply rewrite XGaster out. It pulls whoever is no longer connected to the timeline in addition to the rewriter everytime the multiverse is over written. Shadow,(This is from way back before Chronic was an official character in AEJ, and when I simply referred to them as Shadow) from the bonus chapter and Errorâs dreams, is the only one aside from Core and XGaster to rewrite the timeline.
AEJ Fun Things (Unredacted and updated to chapter 77)
Chapter 10
If you didnât figure it out, the flash of a memory of a younger Dream holding another skeleton is pre-apple incident, and the other skeleton was Nightmare.
Chapter 15
Iâve always had the headcanon that Ink has a magical Tome enchanted with Nimâs magic and coded with Errorâs code and I finally got to place it here. I love Inkâs infinity tome, it also has a search option so Ink can look up a keyword or exact journal date if he needs.
Chapter 20
The memory Error kept having was of cuddling with Ink, with Nim laughing at the two being cute.
Core never meant to tell Error about his future partners, I didnât either. But in the end it added more mystery and some joy/hesitation on Errorâs part.
Error only refused to believe Ink was another one of the 4 for plot purposes lol
Chapter 25
I never intended to have Errorâs middle name/study of religion to impact the story at all, while writing the chapter it came to me as the perfect motivation for the story and to set some canon things into place.
Error was never intended to befriend Ink or Dream as Lapse D. Mode.
I added Cobalt last minute into the equation to set up later events, and I wanted to have him involved before Error remembered him.
I never intended for Error to mess around with Dream as much as he did that chapter, but it allowed me to bring Dream more into the plot since-despite being a main character-he wasnât supposed to be a main plot point until after chapter 50ish
âYou pique my curiosityâ is Dream for âIâm kinda crushing on you but Iâm gonna pretend I'm just curious about your motives and want to learn more about you as my enemy.â
Error didnât put together the Dream and Nightmare came from the same world because while Error and Ink have a shared balance and similar powers-they donât come from the same world. Also Nightmare hid that part of his past because heâs tired of being in Dreamâs shadow, and hid everything that even hinted that he was connected to Dream. Even though his accomplishments-however dark they may be-overshadow everything Dream does, heâs still fearful. Nightmare has also never said the name of the AU he came from.
That old professor at the college that wrote the book on Dream was Errorâs religion professor. Error had to write a paper on the book and knows it cover to cover. It was his professorâs greatest accomplishment.
The hint of yellow on Dreamâs cheekbones reminded Error of Nim, who had a mixed blush(Purple and yellow, with a slate-like color in the middle) like Errorâs own(yellow with red and blue âfrecklesâ).
Error didnât have an answer because he doesnât know how to explain it quite yet. He felt like he had to keep destroying, so he did. (This is the balance pushing him to do it, like a 6th sense in a way)
Chapter 30
Coreâs office, Room 1510 is the numbers for the letters AEJ
âCafes?ââTick tok, Errorâ Core knew Error would eventually open his cafe, âThe Outsiderâ and very subtly cemented the idea in his mind for when Ccino would bring it up in Chapter 45.
Error purposefully called Dream pretty boy again to try and get the same reaction-which he did. Dream didnât pay it much mind because he has a lot of admirers, and while he didnât expect it-he brushed it off like any other compliment he got.
In the meeting room the one who seemed to misplace their soul was Dest, the oldest Chara, who was keeping an eye on Intent and Error-the souls barely holding on are Errorâs Papyrus and Gaster. Mercy is in there because heâs keeping an eye on Death, as Blue is keeping track of Ink and Dream-and Hearts keeps track of Error and Nightmare. Error is the main concern.
Sapphire avenue was named by Lust, who knew the library cafes and Universities were going to be built there-and wanted to name it after Sci, and the first thing Lust remembers about Sci is his glimmering Sapphire eyes. If they had lasted longer, Lust wouldâve taken him there.
Inkâs office being 1504 is an easter egg to his birthday being on April 15.
The pebbles and rocks on the bracelet chain on Broomy Jr. are from Nim
Chapter 33
The one who made Dreamâs scarf and the scones is Nightmare.
Dream only ever refers to Nightmare by name or they because Nightmare has made it clear he wants nothing to do with their shared past, and refuses to acknowledge any of it-even their shared birthday.
Nightmare is also fully transitioned and Dream is still having a little trouble with it.
Chapter 34
Crossâ blunt statement for the year had been calling Killer out for being an absolute hypocrite in monopoly(Killer had been complaining that someone had to have been stealing his money when he wasnât looking-but he had been doing that to others when they left the room. Nightmare had been returning the stolen money when Killer wasnât looking. Error had watched their game from the couch and just kept quiet when Killer asked if he knew whoâd been stealing from him.)
Chapter 35
The nickname for Lapse, Eldeem, I thought up on the spot, but itâs terrible and such an Ink kinda nickname so into the canon it goes.
Dream and Nightmare are 506.
Ink is roughly 800, although he rounds it closer to 700 because thatâs when he was added as leader of the Star council and the first ever record of his existence.
Error is ridiculously close to 1000, somewhere just under it.
Core outranks everyone in the multiverse being hundreds of thousands of years old due to the overwrites. They are nearly a million. (For an idea of how many overwrites theyâve been through, each overwrite at its shortest is about 300-400 years, and longest a little over 2,000 years.)
Chapter 37
The person Dreamâs soul belongs to (âMy soul will always belong to another⌠I would never even dare try with someone else until I talked to them first about it.â) Is Nightmare. Dream feels practically soul bound to him, since they never officially broke up. For the past centuries he thought Nightmare felt the same about the situation-hence why he was so upset over learning Error and Nightmare werenât just together now, but also had been together in the past.
Chapter 38
I wanted to fill in the holes of Heartsâ story, and also bring up Cobalt again so Error is fully aware of him and can connect with Cobalt before remembering him.
Chapter 39
Core is 1000% up for validating Nightmare. Itâs a very small chance of happening, but there have been multiple timelineâs that have happened previously of Nightmare being trans. Nightmare has the highest chance of being trans, and if heâs trans in the timeline it heightens the chance of others in the timeline being trans. Their current timeline has the most trans skeletons that have ever happened-not everyone that has the possibility of being trans is, but itâs the most by far.
Core has indirectly influenced Nightmareâs life twice, and directly talked to him(to influence his life) twice, the second time was telling Nightmare of Cross.
Core has also directed Crossâ life a good deal, which makes sense considering heâs the key piece to XGâs power, holding Over-write and all.
While a heartbreaking chapter and was difficult to write myself, I think Nightmareâs past and what he went through shows his character greatly. Yes he tends to hide things-even highly important things, but it's always for good reason.
Iâve headcannoned for some time that Nightmare is missing a good portion of his skull, thanks to Errorâs help he later fully accepts what happened to him and stops hiding his shattered skull.
Sci went to Dreamtale because of Core, who told him he was needed and to simply trust Core on this. Nightmare is unaware that Sci was told to help him. Sci is the closest thing Nightmare has ever had to a Dad, and while Sci was certainly surprised the first time Nightmare referred to him as Dad, Sci was more than happy to accept the role. Nightmare is hesitant in actually calling Sci his Dad to otherâs in fear for Sciâs life, and also because he knows Error would push him to tell Sci theyâre together and heâs not quite ready to deal with that mess yet. (Sci would be very supportive to learn of their relationship, the mess Iâm referring to is Sci going full Dad mode and asking why Nightmare didnât say anything sooner-asking when they would get married/soul bound/if kids are an option. All the fun stuff parents typically ask when learning about their kidâs relationship.)
By Dream and Nightmareâs first battle, Nightmare had been fully transitioned-thanks to help from Sci-and Ink had long gotten used to Nightmare being well, Nightmare.
Nightmare is currently working in the background of the chapter to find a way to get his old aura back. Most of the books in the library he has are from Reapertale Alphysâ library, he spends a good portion of his time researching for any cure to his corruption-despite how much it helps him.
Nightmare has a familiar but I didn't get the chance to mention them :P
Nightmare doesnât remember it, but the spell he cast on Dream happened right before he blacked out again. It was barrier magic, and being unpracticed at the time-he accidentally made a barrier of stone around Dream.
Chapter 41
âBut something irked him wrong about that Gaster. Like they had old beef together,â That Gaster was XGaster, and sometimes people in the multiverse get deja vu because of faint memories of the previous timeline spilling over. Hence why Geno felt as if they had old beef- the previous timeline XGaster killed him during the Multi-War.
Chapter 42
When Error pulled back from the Antivoid, XGaster took the chance to get into the Antivoid and hid there from then on. Error forgot to tune back in and never visited the Antivoid after that so he never found out.
Iâve always headcanoned Dream to be vegan, and I love the idea that Blue runs a farm in his spare time and itâs completely free range and the animals all pass away as happy as they can be.
âPerhaps one day, if my partnerâs could offer something similar, then I would leave.â The similar Dream is referring to isnât the actual structure or the small cabin feel, but rather the memoryâs and comforts he has in the cabin. He has no reason to leave it in his mind because nothing else gives him such comfort. To him, it doesnât matter that he has to take his baths in the creek nearby or constantly buy ice for his icebox, or even that he has to painstakingly repair the house after each winter.
âAnd it seemed that their friendship blossomed into something bigger. Something of mutual understanding.â Error can understand not wanting to leave a place of stay, having clung onto what he considered the comforting absence of any stimulus that is the Antivoid. He understands what Dreamâs feeling in that moment, even if Dream doesnât know it. They can silently connect over that feeling and grow closer together, the simple sentence being a much bigger confession of weakness. Dream a war hardened God with next to no earthly possessions and no more close friendships then the fingers on one hand has this one weakness-his home in Dreamtale.
Chapter 43
Errorâs realm was originally meant to be the Antivoid-as hinted at in Chapter 10, but I liked the idea of his own realm much more.
With the new context of realms being connected to the soul and mind-Iâm surprised no one realized(or if they did, didnât mention) that Grimmâs character is suddenly made much deeper than he once was. Since Chapter 10 of the series, Iâve told everyone that Deathâs realm is a barren dark place. Everything is dead. He had to bring things(his crows and vultures) outside of the realm in order to fill in that empty void of a landscape. Now, Death subtly shows that since being with Dream and Ink, his realm has begun to show signs of life again. The grass is greener, plants are starting to grow, small animals have returned(think about what that could symbolize in terms of emotional and mental stability). Losing Geno/Error did affect him greatly. During his time with Geno it was a flourishing forest. Now itâs a dead wasteland with the only trees being dead twigs that would snap with the weight of a feather.
Chapter 44
âA simple few missing lines of code. Nothing unusual and something he had seen in worlds for years.â It used to be unusual, and that was before XGaster was even on the game board, Error will find out after XGasterâs defeat that worlds donât typically randomly lose their code.
Inkâs clinginess was an early hint to their recent breakup. Death has his job and Ink wants to be strong for Grimm and doesnât want to appear clingy, he feels comfortable with Lapse and isnât too worried about losing them, so they happily cling to them to help cope with being near Dream after the breakup.
The flash of memory was of Cobalt, just before Cobalt became an error too.
Ink wearing the nightgown and switching to more feminine clothing is an early hint at them being Genderfluid.
I like the idea of Skeletonâs generally being Genderfluid/Gender neutral and wanted to bring it up as canon for the series :} (it also adds extra flesh and color, so to say, to the motives of Dream, Nightmare, and the village-along with how Dream treats Ink and why Killer wants to protect Cross from Dream. Nightmare is fully aware of skeleton history and despite technically not being one-heâs largely treated and seen as one so he wants to correct the delusional idiots out there. Nightmare is the one who taught Error and the gang the proper skeleton history. Thereâs very little mention of wingdings and nothing that teaches the language-so thatâs why Nightmare doesnât know it despite researching skeletons.)
Chapter 38 hinted at Killer liking Cross, and Cross somewhat returning-along with Horror and Dustâs background relationship, but I figured I would out right say it to make it clear, and also build stronger connections to Error and the gang.
Killer didnât want to talk with Nightmare about it because it involved Dream.
I did not plan for Cross to also be trans in this too, but thinking about it Cross gives me serious nonbinary vibes, plus it adds more fuel to the plot and motivation between Killer and Cross. (Also I love the idea of Killer joking to Cross about Cross using xey/xem and then Cross actually wants to try it and enjoys using the pronouns. Also Cross does frequently internally and sometimes externally curse XGaster for being this close to detail when it comes to them-it actually wasnât XGaster that programmed that in at all, and the multiverse has a slight chance of changing his programming to trans after he becomes an outcode.)
Errorâs shit eating grin at Killerâs confession is because he knows if he pesters Killer enough, Killer will either accidentally reveal his lie or out right say the blunt truth of whatever answer heâs been dancing around.
Chapter 45
Error was making milk in hopes of going back to bed, but after seeing Dream awake he said fuck it guess Iâm playing Main Character early today and made coffee instead.
Dream doesnât think he deserves help, he wants to change, yes, and he wants to learn how-but he doesnât think he deserves it. Every relationship heâs considered important he believes heâs/literally has ruined. First Nightmare, then Ink and Death which affected his relationship to Blue and he also assumes Lapse. (Error just accidentally muted Lapseâs phone again and has forgotten to check it, oops.)
With the new context of it having been 489-nearly 490 years since the incident, I alluded to the death of the village and Nightmare/Dreamâs God birth(when they became Gods) being when they(Nightmare & Dream) were 17/nearly 17. Keep in mind Nightmare and Dream when they were created already had the mind equal to that of about a 16 year old and body of one as well, but actually counting from creation to incident is roughly 17 years. So that's how when Nightmare's abuser's are younger than him at the start but seemingly grow to be older than him(becoming adults when Night was technically 17)-since Nightmare's story is based on this technicality.
The village didnât have a schooling system, and by the time they did Dream was much too old for it. Dream has seriously considered trying for schooling, but being a God and dealing with the multiverse heavily impedes that.
Error and Nightmare both have a lot of Degrees, Nightmare learned on his own over the years and after Error was brought back to sanity Nightmare helped him learn.
Error and Nightmare werenât originally meant to teach Dream and build that connection with him.
Nightmare is about a head shorter than Error, but Nightmare doesnât let it stop him at all.
I LOVE the headcanon of Error coming to own a cafe for general outsiders and unwanted. A place that anyone-even the annoying God of Creation and feared God of Death can enjoy, along with any Underlust monsters and âdarkerâ AUs.
âThere are plenty of moments of your immortality that youâve forgotten,â Error has spent a good 800 years of his life immortal, and I specifically had to say moments because the memories that Error will relive from his immortality are just that. Moments. Completely unlike any of his other memories-only pieces of them are actually important and those pieces are spaced out across a good 500 year period.
Chapter 48
âEmotional radarâ was supposed to be âGodly powersâ, but saying godly powers aside didnât make sense because it is a godly power to know that your side of the multiverse balance is out of whack.
Chapter 49
Reaper doesnât know that the ânew Godsâ Nim made friends with were Ink and Error.
Death does know that Nightmare and Dream have a balance, but is unaware that they donât know.
Chapter 50
The slip up Core was referring to was mentioning Errorâs future partners. Error is oblivious to love even though Death does kiss him on the cheek at the end of the chapter.
âDeath and Blue seemed to smile knowingly while Ink and Cobalt gave wide grins.â Death and Blue were smiling knowingly because Death just figured out why he recognised Lapseâs soul and Blue because heâs in on everything, and Error just realized he may be helping Core like Hearts has.
Completely honest, the cafe âThe Outsiderâ is a personal headcanon Iâve had for ages, and I love the idea of VIP room for special guests and so Error can relax in his own cafe without having to hold up the disguise.
Sydney is also a headcanon, I love the idea of Error seeing this disabled mafia tale spider and going, yeah Iâll make them the manager for my cafe. Theyâre perfect.
Special drinks are also a headcanon. Grim beanery is easy, Grim/Reaper. Tasteful rainbow is Ink. Deception is Dream. Royal brightness is Nightmare. The dark chocolate mixed with white chocolate cocoa is Cross. The black coffee paired with raspberry syrup is Killer. The mixed berry handcrafted tea is Hearts. Finally, the minty green tea and cherry tea is Dust and Horror respectively. I wouldâve done one for Ccino⌠but his name is literally short for Cappuccino.
âDeath leaned in, giving him a kiss on the cheek-Lapseâs form flickering before returning.â Lapseâs form flickered because it literally killed the illusion. Whenever Death touches Error he kills him, but while Errorâs body is mortal-and the leftover code of Sci that allows him to be Lapse is mortal, Errorâs soul is now Immortal. (Also more background thing, the only reason Error can switch to Lapse is because the sprite of Sci/sans is still left in his code, so he can temporarily fix his code-aka changing the colors back to normal to look the way heâs supposed to.)
Chapter 51
Originally Core was supposed to make the portal for Geno and Geno would pass out as soon as he showed up in the antivoid, but Coreâs little betrayal was too perfect so thatâs what we ended up with. (Also was made much easier because we already established much earlier Core can change where portals go-changing Errorâs portal from the antivoid to Coreâs office in Chapter 33)
Chapter 52
The multiverse where Error helped Core try and find a way to give him a happy life through and through? That wasnât technically Error. That was Template. Core wanted to see if changing how Error and also the others lifes by swapping them around would fix anything. Clearly it didnât as Core gave up on it. Coreâs thinking behind it was âMaybe the multiverse is going to shit because they arenât in the right roles. This isnât what theyâre meant to do.â Since as we easily see from Error he can create and Ink can destroy.
Core talking about how long they spent looking for an answer was an early hint at their true age.
Core canât use overwrite to get rid of XGaster because XGaster anticipated it would be used against him. Overwrite cannot get rid of him.
Iâve been meaning to bring up Nightmareâs familiar since I introduced him as a warlock. At first I considered Nightmare would make the manor his familiar, but that was complicated and it would bring up further headcanons I had for that-having to feed the house human souls/save stars to keep it as Nightmare familiar and so on. Second, I considered he saved a human soul that controls the house, living as a ghost in the attic with their little sibling that Nightmare also rescued as a condition for becoming his familiar. In the end I decided on his corruption as his familiar-although at first it was âOh I found out my corruption was sentient and now it protects me.â but that gave a lot more implications and that would also need to bring up and idea of Nim not being the only guardian and pulling in the (I believe) canon of a previous guardian of negativity banished into the apples when I havenât previously established that and wouldâve needed to establish that when Reaper talked about her to Sans-so thatâs why we have âI gave my corruption sentienceâ instead.
I donât think anyone has realized it, but while this chapter was originally intended for Error to reconnect with Death-it instead showed a huge marker in Error and Nightmareâs relationship. Nightmare is countlessly showing and giving his weaknesses to Error. Error is the first to have ever visited Nightmareâs realm-which is full of personal items-even his crown and the camera Dream had bought for him. Error is the first-Sci aside-to see Nightmare in his shattered glory. Error is the first that Nightmare truly lets take care of him. Surrendering himself by holding his body together- not being able to move a limb at all to stop whatever he did, even not being able to see what the other was doing once again to Error. It also extends to the trust he has for the gang. He barely has enough magic to move, and he still tells and shows them anyways. Hearts is going to marry Blue. One of their main enemies. Nightmare trusts that Hearts wonât tell Blue his big bad secret.
Chapter 53
Some of Nightmareâs banned nicknames include: Noot, Noot-Noot, Noot-mare, Noot-hair, Octopus (Only Error is allowed), Squid (The gang refers to Ink as squid only to piss off Nightmare, unlucky for Nightmare it stuck), Cuttlefish (Only Error is allowed), Cuddle bear (Only Error is allowed), Tar, Horse-mare, Horsey, Bossy-wossy, and Kingy-wingy.
Cross calls Killer âLight shineâ because of the light Killerâs soul radiates, it's a dim calm white then the bright eyesore of the Antivoid and the red is much more muted. Itâs helped heal the trauma Cross has with those colors-white from the void and red from Chara.
Chapter 54
Core was, in a way, organizing Errorâs dreams. âBastard fuckerâ, much more professionally known as Chronic, was walking into Errorâs dreams to try and non-verbally tell him âIf you keep doing this, youâll end up like this. Youâll end up like me. The people you care for will end up like this. They will die.â
Dream still lets Nightmare into his realm as a means of saying âIâm always here. Iâll wait until youâre ready to talk.â He still deeply cares for Nightmare and wants Nightmare to know that.
Chapter 55
Referencing the âdarkerâ side of Lapse and âsoftâ side of Sydney was just a fun thing to connect the two. They 100% spend hours in the VIP loft talking about very specific ways to get away with crimes and also different cooking recipes. No there isnât an inbetween. They also tend to have philosophical questions and conversations, âWhat if Death literally asked me to kill someone and help him out? Could I still be charged for a crime? Would it be a godly crime to ask that of a mortal? Would it be a mortal crime for a God to intervene like that? Is the Star Council a mortal offense because itâs ruled by two thirds Gods? Anyways yeah never over do vanilla. Always under do it. Youâll regret it I swear. That is more bitter than burnt spider goods, I swear Lapse.âÂ
If it wasnât clear from the warnings on that chapter, Dream-when the right memories are triggered, more specifically being stuck in stone/cramped spaces-struggles with depersonalization dissociation.
Dream went to talk to Nightmare, knowing of Nightmareâs knowledge and hoping to find an answer of what just happened from him-he does find the answer. Despite Nightmare still being his enemy, he knows that whatever has been happening is linked to his years in stone, and he trusts Nightmare to not use it against him. He holds nothing against Nightmare and still trusts him the same.
The level Core was speaking about was the common trait of having held Overwrite at some point. Hence why Core doesnât wish to see Error on that level. If Core were to see Error on that level itâd mean Error made the same mistake again-choosing overwrite.
Chapter 55.5
Dreamâs realm is an exact copy of Nightmareâs, their realms look like this because it's a reincarnation of Nim.Â
The realm was another way to show Dreamâs mental state, to show how bad things had gotten over time. He and Error are far more similar than either would like to think.
Dream trusts Nightmare despite everything because he knows it wasnât Nightmareâs fault. They didnât choose to be guardians, although they did choose God-hood to protect themselves and others. Dream understands Nightmare better than he does himself. Dream had long since left an opening for Nightmareâhis realm. Nightmare allowing Dream to be taught by Error and also helping to teach Dream in addition to teaching Dream at their base is a larger opening that Dream couldâve ever thought of.
Nightmare has all sorts of backup plans, this also includes knowing all of the Star Sansâ and Councilâs phone numbers.
Nightmare isnât ready to let Dream in his realm yet. He doesnât know how Dream will react to having the remnants of the past. The camera sitting clean and cared for on a dainty pillow, his old outfit folded and carefully displayed, even his crown repaired and intact also on display.
It took way longer than I would like to admit to come up with âvelvet sunâ. I wanted something that you would associate with âsoft lightâ since Nightmareâs nickname is âstar light.â I had to look through the thesaurus a lot to get to âvelvet sunâ.
Dream has trouble with learning because heâs very obliviousâto put it as simply as possible. Most explanations donât work for him. Nightmare is up front and forward with him. As blunt as needed. He doesnât talk down to Dream for not going to school, he says things exactly as they are without the use of trying to imagine some scenario.Â
Nightmare also understands that Dream most of the time doesnât have the words to explain how heâs feeling and has learned how to help out Dream with that as well.
Chapter 56
If it wasnât clear the shadowy hands that sparked Errorâs magic was Chronic.
I had to completely watch through and take notes on a movie version of the Error sans ask comic. There are 5 pages of notes from that. The second half of the chapter is pretty much cut and paste with some more detail from the comic.
God of Destruction is the self-given title, although it is acknowledged by Core. A more accurate title would be âThe God of Code'' since his true calling is repairing or removing the code of the multiverse while Ink is in charge of creating code and letting worlds in. Unfortunately at the beginning he was more like a broken codeâremoving anything even if it could be repaired, although he did come to learn his lesson.
Chapter 57
The other Gods were completely unaware that Error and Ink had come into existence until after Nimâs death, since Nim was stuck in place she really had no way of telling or contacting them. By then Error and Ink were far from reachable so Reapertale mostly let them be and figure things out. It wasnât until Nightmareâs rise to power that the Gods of Reapertale realized that Nim had been replaced.
Error didnât want to tell them his name because he didnât trust them. He barely understood the kindness they were showing him and didnât know how to reciprocate it after the toxic environment the voices in the antivoid gave him.
This is the second time Iâve mentioned code just disappearing, I continued to stay surprised as no one thought to comment on it.
Iâm surprised no one noticed why I paid so much special attention to XGaster, this chapter was the second time Error had an off feeling about that Gaster.
âYes, I might as well have created them myself.â This line is begging for attention and is subtly spoiling everything. Although still no one commented on it.
Core told Ink to trust Error above everyone else, even Core. Ink completely trusts Error, and so he trusts Errorâs judgmentâalthough it was immediateâand Error proves his judgment correct.
Chapter 57.5
I actually messed up a small bit, earlier in the series I said there was only one book on Dream, and in this chapter I referenced a whole section dedicated to Dream. Although to fix the plot-hole: After the scandal of Dream breaking up with Ink and Death many books were written about the relationship and the sudden near disappearance of Dream. Not all are in the best view of him, some are from a perspective of pity and others of hate. This feeds into Dreamâs overthinking.
Errorâas Lapseâfigured he could make a book on Nightmare since he knew the other so closely, and make some money off of that because there arenât many books on the God of Negativity.
There is a single book between Dream and Nightmareâs sections, written by Sci from the Star Council. Itâs the only book that records Nimâs existence. Death personally paid for it to be written and got the help of the other Gods to fill the book as much as they could.
Both Nightmare and Dream tend to deflect others' feelings towards them, even if they return. They got this habit from their harsh breakup between each other and the problems their relationship had prior. Itâs why Nightmare doesnât say âloveâ often, even as a nickname. Itâs also why Dream tends to overthink things because the one time he wasnât thinking straight(leaving Nightmare alone nearby to the people who Dream just witnessed abusing him)âhe lost Nightmare.
I didnât plan for this chapter to be as long as it is, I just planned to only write Nightmareâs POV, but switching around gave me the chance to write other characters' perspectives on things and have fun with their different thought processes, take a look into how they think and view the world. It also allowed me to show dynamics and come up with more nicknames. Cressy took far longer to come up with than I would like to admit.
Chapter 58
Error is a piece of Chronic, so Core telling Error to trust Chronic might as well be saying âtrust yourselfâ which absolutely cracks up Chronic. Itâs an inside joke that Chronic says often. Everytime they talk about plans and that Error doesnât trust Chronic, Chronic slowly stars âSoâŚâ âChronic, for the fourth time, no.â âI guess you could say-â âI wish I never let you live.â âHe needs to trust himself more.â âIâm done.â Core smiles everytime because its so stupid and it makes them feel a little younger, less like the multiverse is on their shoulders.
Chronicâs form flickering as they entered the portal was a hint that their portals are made through Deathâs powers but their body is Errorâs. Since when Death touches Error as Lapse his form flickers.
While Chronic and Errorâs timelines are back to back, they are not exact. Chronic is the initial timeline that I was supposed to write. The originally planned much more angsty with little comfort story. The story where Error spiraled down and his pain brought everyone together. Chronic is still recovering from it. Error is only different in the fact that while he is in pain and slowly pulling away, heâs pulling together everyone while he suffers. Chronic did not have that same net, he did not have a realm to escape to. He ran across worlds until the gang and Stars pulled him back. Even then, he never fully came back.
Chapter 59
âItâs going to take a lot to get me down.â Is an important sentence because it does take a lot to stop Error. Like an overpowered Gaster wielding the power of a Creator. Itâs a common phrase for Error, and heâs said it many times to assure others that heâs okay in previous timelines. Including right before heâs died.
Chapter 60
Dream was originally going to confess to Error at the beginning, but I decided to hold it off and make the chapter more central around reconnecting and strengthening the connection between Error and Cross as well as the gang and Error learningâor starting to at leastâto cope and work through his current problems.
I actually took a little break on this chapter to reread through the whole series, which at 59 chapters takes most people 2 days (from my experience and commenters)
Chapter 61
Ink wasnât trying to start a fight, Ink was actually trying to get Error to stay still so they could talk.
âThat in death, he found the starsâ Is a reference from when Death took him to outertale in chapter 27
âA⌠different place to call âhomeâ aside from the antivoidâ Nimâs AU in this chapter ends up becoming a second safe place for Error, but Errorâs not willing to admit that he considers it a safe place so weâre left with âdifferent placeâ close enough.
Chapter 62
The question what happens when a God dies was major hints towards Nimâs death and foreshadowing for Errorâs own âdeathâ as well as Chronicâs past.
Chronic disappearing âGoing rebelliousâ and having Deja vu was a hint at them being a fusion of Error Ink Dream Nightmare and Death. All of them have a hard time with Nim. Nightmare and Dream feel guilty because they âreplacedâ Nim, Error and Ink were close to Nim, and Death was very close to Nim as well. Nim helped him dramatically in his early years before Mercy was created.
âThank you for your help, Nim, goodbye.â Was a hint at Nimâs soon demise, and it was actually Core thanking them for helping Error and Ink, not for their âhelpâ in finding Chronic.
âThat fuckinâ nicknameâ Was Kitten, which Ink had called Error the previous chapter.
Chapter 62.5
I didnât expect to write this chapter, but I wanted to write what happened with Chronic and give the readers more insight to Core and Chronicâs relationship, as well as Chronic themself.
I refer to the different parts of Chronic a lot in this chapter. The realm of his dreams was for Error. The pillow nest was in reference to Death in the fusion, little bird loves his cuddles and making sure he--and in turn everyone in the fusionâis comfortable. The reading was in reference to Nightmare.
Dreamâin the fusionâtakes a bit of a back seat in this chapter, acting as a neutral. Checking in on Core and holding back more harsher words from others.
The original draft was only 200 words, a very short dialogue between Chronic and Core, but I wanted to make it at least 500, so I switched from using Coreâs POV to Chronics.
This chapter pretty much explicitly told why Core was so weird in Chapter 62
The smoky true black wings and dripping âlimbsâ were hints to Nightmare and Grim being part of the fusion that is Chronic.
Ink is the only one to not talk out of the fusion. Ink took the hardest hit from losing Nim. Being with the fusion has given them better memory and overtime reliving through everything in the new multiverse has pretty much completely retained their memory.
Chapter 63
I actually pulled into my own experiences with pain for this chapter, a weird disorder in my family that shows up every few generations that makes it really hard for my nerves to recognize pain and I had to learn what pain felt like and what to do rather than just instinctâso pain is really disconnected for me, which, with Errorâs glitched war hardened mortal body with the soul of a God in it, I think makes a lot of sense for him.
I flat out talked about the previous multiverse wars and previous timelines without actually saying anything about them⌠more lore under the radar
I hinted that Ink used to have to deal with the worst of the voices before they left to torture Error.
Hinted that Dream and Nightmareâs little hut was made by Ink for Error.
Life and Grim visited because Error was on the verge of dying, Grim recognized the soul and went to itâafter getting Life. Nim didnât recognize the name Geno, but explained about Error. Things connected in Life and Deathâs minds, but they didnât say anything. Just wishing Error well. Nim knew Error wasnât born a God because of this, Ink didnât put it together. Just figured Life and Death had heard about Error through Nim because the three were close.
Chapter 64
This was the first time I ever broke the rule of separating Errorâs memories and present between chapters. I purposely made it extremely disorienting for both Error and the reader to simulate that, Core has to outright say what happened for Error and the reader to understand what just happened.
I hinted again that Death was apart of Chronicâs fusion. Error actually flat out seeing that Death was in the fusion without realizing itâin his desperation for comfort thinking Chronicâs wings were Deathsâsince no one else has them, yet.
Chapter 65
In this chapter I mentioned it had been a year since the memories started for Error, which lines up in actual time with the anniversary of AEJâalthough itâs a few days off (the chapter was posted on the 28, the anniversary is on the 22).
Cobalt crocheting and teaching Ink how to was set up for the coming chapters.
When writing the second half I was talking to a friend about the chapter and word for word summarized this part as âif it could be gay-er, it would be a stereotype.â
Reaper and Ink both realize that Errorâs talking about Nimâs death. Ink also realizes about their and Errorâs shared pastâbut still canât really remember so they donât mention it.
Chapter 66
The hating underfell sans thing? I accidentally made it make a lot of sense in AEJ. Because Cherryâfrom like chapter 4âwas an asshole ex to Lust. Error specifically has a vendetta against Cherry, and Cherry alone is #13.
Chapter 67
I didnât originally intend for the hut to have been Errorâs/Inkâs and later become Dream and Nightmareâs. That was more or less the details filling in themselves as this story often did.
The books falling into Errorâs path was Chronicâs doing.
Inkâs tome is a personal headcanon Iâve had for ages and I absolutely love the idea and was so happy I could implement it into AEJ. Specifically a tome made by Error to be infinite and often times Iâll add in the detail of how it can act like a fricken library computer and you can search up key words and dates bc holy fuck does Ink have centuries packed into that thing. Also love the idea of Ink being like âwait, since when were we friends Error??â Error sighs, âPage 483, date XXX5â âWhat??â âYour tome.â âOh-â *opens tome and reads what he wrote for the date âOH! Yeah, silly me lol.â They are the definition of tired and energetic couple dynamic, romantic or platonic does not matter.
Transitioning to present between those memories helped several different things: I could connect the tome Ink currently has to the one Error made in the memories, I could bring up that Nightmare is opening up to people and actively letting Ink and Death be trusted alone with Error, and also show how Error was beginning to healâbefore being promptly traumatized.
XGaster had promised Ink a soul. Which I honestly forgot about but tied up nicely for the end because Chronic filled that wish, so it took away any interest Ink had in X and took away any control X had over Ink.
Ink wanted the soul so they could be genuine for Error, understand the moral issues he was having over the guardians. After the apple incident Ink forgot about wanting a soul again, only randomly remembering it and getting into a funk until something else caught their attention. In the span of the story of AEJ (Errorâs present, not the memories, I know it's confusing.) Ink mostly doesnât remember wanting a soul. If there was any time that they did, it would be when Dream broke things off with Death and him, a moment that would make him want to be genuine in his partners sorrow and pain. Sometimes Lapse would invoke the feeling briefly, like wanting genuine happiness when seeing them about and especially when the cafe opened.
âHe barely saw a glimpse of Inkâs truthful hurt,â it was truthful that time because of Error, soul or not theyâve spent the past centuries together. No matter who you are, spending centuries together creates a relationship, and knowing that you will not see that person anymore hurts. (this is following the idea of Ink chooses what he wants to feel about people, ex: enemies if he took some pink paint he wouldnât go crazy and start loving them, but he would probably hug Dream if he took pink paint. Soulless or not he knows what he wants to feel and still has a set of morals, just not the stereotypical ones we see in most characters, AEJ Ink simply has problems with the grey range: XGaster helped him, and Ink helped X in returnâbut heâs bad? But heâs done good things. Itâs a grey thatâs confusing and leaves him with the morals he has, trust Errorâs word or follow X for the soul he wants for Error, he tries to do both but fails as we know.)
Chapter 68
This was a chapter I was ridiculously excited for, and itâs a giant paragraph on my plot document. I donât think when I was writing this that I wrote it as long as I wanted to, but Iâm still happy with the end result.
If you canât tell, I took a page of christianity for the humans in this chapter.
At first, Nightmare was quite weary of the cloak stranger (Error) just hearing stories from Dream and soul gripping with fear for what the stranger could be planning, but the moment of handing the spellbook over is extremely beneficial to the entire story, and thereâs a reason Chronic had to make sure this landed in Errorâs path. This is what helps create the bond between Dream and Nightmare, Nightmare becoming the âstar lightâ we know. This is what opens the gate way to spells for Nightmare at a young age and what helps him be so much more magically focused in AEJ (Most interpretations leave him more academically or musically focused) Nightmares spells are used a lot in AEJ, his sleep spell as well as his âstar lightâ are pretty much his trademarks, loved by Error and Dream.
Whatâs somewhat funny is Error thinks in this chapter that human religion never made sense to him⌠keep in mind in AEJ Error canonically had a degree in religionâwhich includes human. Remember how furious he was in his memories? Now imagine how much more angry he could be understanding the bs excuses and reasoning that the humans had. (which sadly also happens a lot in modern times world wide to this day)
Dream did attempt to ask about the bruises and dents in Nightâs bones. Night just laughed it off or gave half hearted excuses, which Dream could tell were lies but didnât want to make NM uncomfortable so he didnât force NM to say anything. They 100% talk about this later in life and by the end of AEJ laugh at how stupid they both were.
Dreamâs memory is extremely blurry around the time of the apple incident, barely remembering âStrangerâ bringing NM to him and not remembering what he said, howeverâ he does remember distinctly Strangerâs voice. Itâs why Dream cares about Lapse so much, its nearly identical voices, (a little more ruff from being traumatized in the antivoid) he holds some hope that Lapse is a descendent of Stranger.
The altercation between Error and Ink in this chapter made Ink want a soul more than ever. He didnât leave Dreamtale at all until well after the apple incident because of this. Just sitting in the tree working over everything in his mind trying their best to understand but failing. Ink doesnât remember it, but he was there long enough that he did see Sci show up and take Nm away.
Chapter 69
There are many interpretations of how Error handled the trauma of the antivoid, and somehow I managed to fit both of the main interpretations into AEJ. This first time Error relentlessly fights against the memory loss, doing his best to remember everyone close to him. The second time he gives up, basically having a âflash of lifeâ moment before he surrenders to the loss. It hurt far too much to handle, and losing those memories was an escape from it.
I pretty much summarize Errorâs new life in the memories (aka, insane as the past Error has been nicknamed in my docs). In the philosophical moment Insane has, he thinks: âMaybe next time he would choose to live amongst mortals and enjoy the simple things in life.â He does eventually live alongst side mortals, eating and sleeping with them, even going as far as to live TWO mortal lives, going full out in the struggle of building up a business in the bustling city of Omega, because apparently being a royal scientist previously and a Code master of the multiverse/ self proclaimed God of Destruction wasnât enough.
âNot the death that plagued him so. Watching over him like some over-protective guardian.â I played around with words here and I love what I did so enjoy reading it again.
âIf he fought, however, there was Ink to think of. The chance that Purple and Yellow were still alive, that he could be close to them. Purpleâs laugh was music, and Yellow was just as charming. Then honoring Nimâs memory. Finally teaching Purple and Yellow about Gods, about the amazing deity that came before them, the balance, tell them anything.â Because Error didnât fight, none of that happend. None of them care for the balance. Error forgot what it was and so did Ink, then Nightmare and Dream never learned. Nightmare and Dream only know of Nim because of the few wives tales that the village told and hearing sometimes from Death. Most of the deities of Reapertale donât know they even exist or if they do, donât recognize they are the guardians after Nim. Reaper doesnât have much of an excuse and not all of the Gods in Reapertale have balances to uphold, so he didnât think to mention it to Error, Ink, Dream, and Night.
Something I regret not conveying properly is what Error felt after returning from the recovery. Heâs so fucking grateful to have Ink back, to know that heâs repaired things with Death and found him again, and honestly, feeling like an idiot for pushing Nightmare and Dream away. In that moment, he doesnât want to push them away or do anything that could make them go away. All he knows is to tell Nightmare he(nightmare) is alright(aka, saying that Nightmare is ok to come closer, that right now he wants him close), the communication that NM always rewarded him for, something safe that wouldnât push away.
Plot hole is that Dream didnât bring up thinking Lapse could maybe be a descendent of Stranger here, but itâs fine because that thought process is immediately just considered coincidence once Dream hears that Error was Stranger.
âstill upset they didnât dieâbut that might be post-memory haze talking.â Error has changed since then and acknowledges it. He only kills when needed, even the terrible terrible people.
âA smile tugged at his face. In the past, he wouldâve never believed it, soul freezing at any inclination of attachment. Now, he was starting to believe they were there for him.â Find this finalizing line a little funny (in a dark humor kinda way) because itâs not long after this chapter I promptly traumatize the fuck out of Error to a point where any healing heâs done is forgotten and he completely regrets any thing heâs done in life(because heâs super guilty that he was even allowed to go on for so long not living with the weight of it when it must have tortured Cobalt for so long, so a lot of guilt crashing down at once, literally centuries worth)
Chapter 69.5
I wanted to include Chronic in this and give an inner eye to their and Coreâs dynamic and some of their conversations.
It is an honor to meet Template, Core talks very highly of them and Template is the reason Core was able to get this point, they wouldâve not only given up long ago but would have no idea where to go at all with the overwrites.
Errorâs alright because for a moment he doesnât have to be everything he is in his multiverse, he can just blend in and sit back, not be the main character he always has to be.
Templates comment on âthe string and glitch situationâ is far more accurate than youâd first think, because Glitch had really no clue how he got into Stringâs multiverse and I doubt Iâll ever give a clear explanation for it. If you want for the sake of narrative (because technically, I can connect all of my series together as a megaverse but thatâs far too confusing) Letâs say that Glitch is from Coreâs OG universe (which is easy bc they both stem from after the events of Underverse 0.4) and Core accidentally or purposefully dropped them off. That aside, Chronic also at the start had no clue what was going on and didnât function well, the first centuries they skulked and lurked about until Core made a realm for them. They didnât function well as a fusion and it took centuries to get as used to it as they are, to be so fluid and act together as one. Give up control of some aspects and take control in others. It took them time to coordinate like they have. They let the Error of the fusion take front seat for talking and body when working with Error, same for the other four during 1 on 1s. Then it depends on the situation. People often know others better than they know themself, there are many little things that you do that the people that love you probably pick up on that you donât notice. You wouldnât second guess that someone that half heartedly talks like you sometimes does the same weird things you do, we humans naturally mimic each other and pick up what others do.
The coin was a major hint to the whole fusion. The sentimental intent and taste of fake emotion was hints to Dream and Nightmare, the mention of recognized creation magic Ink, and flowers not dying under their touch was Death.
The blanket was a second hint to the fusion. Dream and Nightmare dying the fabric and collecting the dyeâlike they had done together for Dreamâs scarfâthen spinning it was actually Death, the rainbow hues Ink, and knitting/sewing it together was Error.
Chapter 70
The emotion Error was feeling was guilt, heâs guilty for everything. For the rampages he knows he used to do, now against the ideals Nim taught him and he agrees with now. For pushing himself away from Nightmare, feeling like heâs playing with Nights emotions when Error is just struggling with himself and having trouble maintaining the relationship. Errorâs guilty for pushing away the gang especially now that heâs grown so close to Cross and that he knows heâs missed so much of their growthâthe relations that had grown between themâand he canât get that time back. Heâs guilty for forgetting Ink and his old bond, being Grimâs soul, avoiding Life and Mercy, and for spending time on himself when he should be helping others. Having all these lives remembered back to back is tearing him apart, he could go back to Sci roots and follow the morals he had then, distance himself and take care of himself like he did as Geno, go rogue like the early days in the antivoid, care for the multiverse like he was taught to, or keep up the life he had now and ignore the inner turmoil. While he struggles to figure out who he is, heâs losing the life he has nowâor at least thinks he is. Thinks that everyone around him is moving away when the opposite is happening. Theyâre all growing closer, and Errorâs in the center, not the outskirts. Lapse has also slipped away, and because everyoneâs worried over Error, theyâre forgetting Lapse. So in a way, Errorâs right, just not about the right identity.
Sydneyâsince sheâs from a Mafia taleâknows strongly of loss, close or not. Sheâs one of the few that is unaware of Errorâs turmoils and therefore focusing on Lapse and keeping his lifeâs work afloat when he is gone. He brought her up from the dust (pun not intended), now itâs her turn to help him. The otherâs that focus on Lapse are Blue and Cobalt, Hearts more preoccupied with Error and Ink concerned over Lapse, but wanting to focus on Error too. Ccino and Death, the only two to know of Errorâs second identity, are focused on him in general, whether Error is acting as Lapse or not.
Spotsâand Blueâs cow, Cinnamonâwere late additions, and far from important to the story, but I just love the idea of them being close to one animal or another at the farm. Cinnamon is an older, more brownish cow while Spots is the more typical black and white. Also I like the idea of Honey napping with chickens and Hearts being really good at horseback riding. Him and Blue go out into the mountains and trails with their horses for dates. Hearts also loves the sheep and with the help of Cobalt has gotten really good with anything to do with woolâshearing, dying and knitting.
Dream canât say no to Cobalt because Dream knows of Cobaltâs past and trauma and was there when he was rejoining society and getting used to people again. Dream canât say no to him in the same way Nightmare canât say no to Horror.
Chronic does know. I donât know if I have mentioned it, but Chronic rarely says I, and itâs highly important every time they do. When Chronic says âI knowâ to Error, itâs because they do. Thatâs an Error on Error conversation. The error of the Chronic fusion does know, he has gone through something extremely similar, and while their multiverseâs have differences, they are close. Chronic Error can relate to the guilt on a personal level, he knows.
Chapter 71
Errorâs feelings, the way I described it, is very empathetic to myself. My nerves are very broken to feeling most thingsâthanks geneticsâso my sense of touch is based on what my muscles can feel, so being cold or limbs falling asleep is very disorienting, which I applied to Error as at this point, heâs been alone in the cold antivoid, just trying to rest, for a while. Limbs cold and asleep, bean bag just as cold against his face.
Errorâs used to feeling half dead, soul barely beating if at all but still alive and moving. Being alive is painful for Error and heâs not used to the warmth of life, itâs burning to him. For a bit perspective for normal bodied people (yes, my nerve damage extends to telling temps): You just came inside after walking in the cold and go to the bathroom and wash your hands, the water's hot and your hands cold and it feels burning at first but then you recognize that it's just warm. Prolong that burning, thatâs what Errorâs feeling.
Error is afraid, heâs terrified of the outside, itâs not controlled, not something he knows how to handle. He knows how to handle the antivoidâheâs not comfortable in it, but itâs familiar.
Leaving to the underground near immediately makes Error overwhelmed and tired, too much to handle and to deal with.
Often during the chapter I cut over to Errorâs thoughts, the desperation that he feels, the accomplishment heâs trying to reach. The voices did well to manipulate them, and even when trying to prove them wrong, he still searches for their validation. ââŚWhere are the voices? He did good, right? He was doing what they asked-â
For this chapter parts of it are pretty much word for word copied from the actual original ask error sans comic.
For AEJ, the moment of Error holding back, unable to kill papyrus is what cements to Cobalt that Error was simply hurt, and not fully in control of what he was doing. That he had a chance to be good and sometimes does good.
When Error âtalksâ about Cobaltâs soul in this chapter and the next, itâs constantly talked about the same way the voices talk to Error, although its a sad attempt at hiding Errorâs jealousy. â...attaching to that pathetically kind soulâŚâ
By this point in the chapter, Error while still manipulated by the voices, had grown tired and annoyed with them again, restarting the cycle he has with them. One party always desperate and another always tired and angry with the other.
The reason Cobalt is a âdirty liarâ is the voices had brainwashed Error that he could never have friends, he didnât deserve them. The only reason Error was able to later make friends is he became allies with Nightmare for his own benefits, and for a long time didnât consider them friends. It was only once he started staying at the castle more often and out of range of the voices control that he became more open, he doesnât remember much of this time.
In a way, Error is scared of Cobalt. Heâs scared of the relationship and the commitment. His soul hurts even at the thought, afraid of being hurt again and the relationship torn apart.
Chapter 72
He was searching for Nimâs presence, which led him to the remains of Dreamtale.
The âodd creatureâ was Nightmare, who kept a close eye on Dreamtale between bouncing around AUs and trying to find a place to call his own.
Nightmare at this point knows well of the destroyer, and did well to both protect himself and Dream from Error. Although Error is in the back of his mind as a possible ally, at the moment thereâs nothing he can offer the destroyer for that allyship.
The voices are very toxic as soon as heâs back, although I was careful to make it a more underlying toxicity. Cobalt wasnât important, just a brat. Just like you called him. They didnât call him a brat and leave him alone in the antivoid, Error did. The blame isnât on them. No one else can hear them. Itâs all on Error. How could he blame the voices? They didnât do the action, Error did. Then less underlying but a normal line to Error ânow heâs just as bad as you.â Then reminding Error that he deserves to be alone, taking away the little control he hadâor at least, making Error think the control is out of his hands.
Chapter 73
Coming back, Error feels more broken than ever, he needs that validation he was seeking from the voices in the past. He needs those pieces of his soul back. Nothing feels right. Chronic is extremely helpful in helping relieve the need, and so is Dream and Nightmare.
Coming out of the memories, Error feels lost for any control, afraid to speak up to Chronic about anything he wants. Keep in mind, he spent centuries in that antivoid with those voices, all the progress he had made from the voices, taking back control, might as well be gone. He doesnât want to burden anyone. Thatâs a safe thing to confess, because he doesnât deserve to burden anyone, heâs expecting Chronic to reinforce that. That he doesnât deserve to be able to âburdenâ people, but instead heâs told the opposite.
Chronic was very smart in the way he approached this, Error wants to please right now and then take the validation, just like he did with the voices. Chronic reminds him of what his lovers want, that they want to help himâbut of course, without saying that they want to help. Rewording it. Error while distraught, is still Error. He doesnât need help, but if it will make others happyâhe will help others.
Error right now feels so small, out of control despite the main character he is.
Nightmare doesnât quite understand the extent of the voices' torment, or that Error just underwent their torment again. Error wasnât willing to explain it the first time, and even less so now.
Dream mentioning that keeping all of that to yourself is âbadâ is referencing Nightmareâs corruption, that keeping all of the trauma to yourself leads you down a path of bottling it up and destroying yourself. Nightmare and Dream can both see the signs in Error, and both are determined to let him go down that path.
Error, while out of control, wants to remind Nightmare that heâs still here too, just like Nightmare used to say. He wants to come back to control and be the person they love, but the fresh revival of trauma has left him uncertain. Holding on to Nightmareâs hand was symbolic. Will Nightmare keep moving? Or truly be there like heâs said? Nightmare waits, and is patient. He doesnât move, he lets Error take the control he wants and however much he wants. For all Nightmare couldâve cared in that moment, Error couldâve pulled him back down and just held him close. But Errorâs not ready to just take that amount of control, a small piece of validation and love it all he can muster to allow himself right now, and even thatâs pushing the limits.
Error doesnât take the laugh as something taunting, but enjoys Nightmareâs joy. Itâs a chuckle of positivity that Error loves. Itâs the validation he was looking for.
Nightmare 100% kisses Dream as soon as that door closes.
As you all know now, Chronic did bring him back (I know, Chapter 5)
Error can open his arms for Ink because itâs not taking control, not to him. Itâs pleasing Ink, giving the comfort that he knows thanks to Chronic they want.
I continue to have Error only say âsafeâ things, everything Error mentions is something that usually the voices would affirm and use against him. When he attempts to talk about the voices, he stops. That isnât safe. He canât talk back to them right now. Heâs not fueled by rage like when he woke up with Reaper and Nightmare, heâs scared. Heâs afraid.
Error doesnât want to be reminded how bad he is, just like how the voices just did. He doesnât want to be reminded of his guilt, but itâs what he expects Ink to do. He also expects Ink and everyone else to be disgusted, and he doesnât want to lose Ink again. He doesnât want to outright speak up about what heâd done.
Itâs highly assuring that Ink isnât going to force Error to say anything, and it gives more control back to Error.
Ink is really validating in this chapter. Contradicting what all the voices were telling Error. âYou werenât yourself back then, remember? Whatever the voices convinced you to do, itâs not your fault.â âI⌠I still-â âEither way. Itâs not your fault. Whatever you did, Iâm sure you can find forgivenessâ Error wasnât himself back then, but as the voices subtly reminded, he still did it. Not the voices. The voices didnât force him to do anything. Ink reminded Error that he wasnât really in control then, and it isnât his faultâeven if it was, he can find forgiveness.
Ink ruining the moment pulls Error away from being scared of the voices, it pulls him back to himself. Back to when he was in control. Distracting him with their jokes and the ruined moment distracted him from why the moment even happened in the first place.
Iâve had Inkâs coming out in my notes for ages and Iâve been waiting so long to write it.
For the moment, Error is distracted. He doesnât have to think about being afraid of the voices, Ink in his arms and the souls of the people he cares about nearby.
Chapter 74
This chapter is mainly for two things: to cement the connection between Dream and Errorâshow that Dream understands far more than he lets onâand for Errorâs inner dilemma, does he leave them? Then, why does he want to leave them? He does want to leave them, and doesn't want to hurt them anymore, so heâs going to make them as happy as possible before he leavesâforgetting that him leaving will hurt them again.
Dream is the most open in this chapter than he has been in the whole series. Heâs constantly keeping a wall up about who he is, appearing to have walls of glass and managing to convince people that what they see in those walls are true when itâs a carefully crafted facade. Lapse saw a glimpse of the real Dream when Dream had the dissociation episode. The real Dream in AEJ is riddled with mental difficulties but full of selflessness. As much as it would make him happy to stay with Ink and Death at the beginning, he knew he was hurting Inkâeven if he didnât understand why. He knew staying around Ink would continue to hurtâeven if Omega is his home. He knew that being around others and working with others makes him happyâbut he pushed himself away and poured himself into his garden, but like Dream said in the chapter: âplants canât fill that emptiness I have without peopleâ he needs to be around people to be happyâbut he completely locked himself away to ensure that others could be happy. This is the first real view the readers get of Dream, the Dream thatâs uncertain and just doing his best, even when struggling just to get through the day.
Error spent ages pretending, he doesnât really know who he is anymore through all the confusion, even when the answer is in front of his eyes. He spent so long being only one thing, he thinks he has to pick when he doesnât have to.
Dream was going to say âDo you want to help meâ but thatâs more of a trigger for Error than anything else, so he reworded it.
Rose was something much older that I brought up from an AEJ nickname chart, so I figured I could wedge in there, solidify the relationship a little more.
Despite what Error says, Dream is still worried over Error. Just because Error wanted to, doesnât mean it didnât hurt him to do soâitâs clear as day in Dreamâs eyes that Error is forcing himself to make this progress. Dream does not hold his concerns to himself, and thatâs why Nightmare is careful but attentive with Error the next chapter.
Chapter 75
This chapter is highly constructed and a facade by Nightmare, the gang, and everyone else who now calls the castle home. Alerted by Dream, Nightmare made sure to tell everyone to keep eyes on Error. That Error would likely be forcing his progress to make others happy, but not to stop him. He needs to stumble and fall, to learn that forcing himself is not going to help. Nightmare also alerts them that he knows there is definitely some ulterior motive to forcing this progress as it was only a few days ago that Error was more than content to spend the rest of his immortal life in that library sipping on soup and nibbling on chocolate with his books and laptop. Theyâre all keeping an eye out for some sign or intent that could give them an idea of what that motive is.
Chapter 77
His soul and thoughts fogging was clever word choice, as I built that image of his soul raining and both rain and thoughts can be foggy.
His vision âdustingâ wasnât clever word choice. It was literal. For AEJ, I put far more emphasis to monster customs as well as word choice. The characters do not use human sayingsâaside from those who were raised around humans. Word choice is the number one thing I want readers to pay attention to in AEJ, and with that information alone, the whole story can change. Some words are built on further fiction, world building, and scenarios or imagination. Some words are literal. I canât easily say which is more, the literal or nonliteral words, but I can say both are equally important to the story.
And thatâs it for AEJ.
Originally, this was going to be my last series. When it was done I was going to write a semi-long piece about myself and my journey with creation, as well as directing âsecret-time-is-hereâ to my other persona, which for now Iâll leave unmentioned. Although some friends I have through that second persona are aware of âsecretâ.
But for now, Iâm slowly creating, and I plan to keep creating.Â
My current plans are to rework The Lonely and The One because holy fuck does that story have more holes than swiss cheese, and to rewrite and put more detail into those chapters and that unscripted bittersweet story. I doubt itâll be often, as most of my effort goes into the content creation (streaming, branding, video creation, editting, tiktok/youtube shorts, etc.) of my other persona, but honestly, I think about writing the next chapter and working on The Lonely and the One constantly. And, if you ever find my other persona, and you think it might be me, honestly? I would not mind you calling it out (ex ask on tumblr on this acc or comment on twitter, don't harrass small content creators people). But Iâll simply leave it as a mystery for now. (However, if you see this on Ao3 I recommend you go to my twitter or tumblr to try and find it, itâs pretty obvious in my eyes lmao. Iâve even liked or rebloged some stuff from my other persona XD).
And with that, Iâll leave this post. Have a great new year, and if you see this on tumblr, expect more reblogs and random shit.
Does the 5.1K+ words excuse a three week wait? Also I threw in a lot of old details/questions in this chapter and I love the whole thing.
TW: Implied Dreammare
His soul felt like it was racing with excitement. The thrill of this secret, being able to surprise everyone, made him want to burst. It took a lot of careful planning but he made time for himself away from the castle. He missed the little plots he had. The scheming that went into being Lapse, coming up with something new and big every now and again just to throw Omega or even his friends off his trail.
Firstly, he tested the waters, asking Death to join him in Omega, just a small at-home date in the penthouse still under Lapseâs name. To say the other was surprised would be an understatement. To his credit, Reaper was careful on the subject. Poking gently, making sure he was ready for this new step, even if it was something so small. However, it was nice to feel the loving intent behind everything, and he sorely needed the reminder that this was a bigger step than anything he had done in the past weeks.
They sat contently, tangled in each other's arms as nighttime air and noise drifted in. They kept all the lights off, basking in each other's presence as the glow of neon lights crept into the open room. It was a little unnerving, finally being back in Omega, but it also brought him joy. The initial fear had been worth it. It was a step in the right direction. Moving steadily toward being able to visit Sydney in person, see his workers, and be able to be back as well as be hands-on in both his businesses.
The next step was a little harder since he wanted it to be a complete surprise to Sydney when he came back. So, he warned all his workers but her, giving them all a good scare. Of course, they still donât know heâs Error, but they were surprised to hear from him at all. And while some were on the fence about keeping his return from Sydney, the surprise of it convinced them.
Then, he did the last preparation of visiting the Outsider and asked Chronic to follow him to the VIP loft.Â
He wanted to spend some time there and reacquaint with the bustle and buzz of people at a safe distance, take the small steps and take his time to readjust. And, through his listing of the pros and cons, this gave the most bonuses. He got to spread out all the paperwork he had without fear of eavesdroppers, as well as being able to spend more one on one time with Chronic.
It was difficult to talk with themâat first and still days later, as they seemed to seclude themselves more and more, but Error managed.
The small talk was stale but better than nothing. He was starting to understand the trouble his lovers had when he was lost in his own mind. But, that makes sense, they are one and the same after all.
ââEy, Chronic?â
The other hummed softly, unfocused eyes staring out at the cafe, blindly watching people come in and out. It was painfully obvious the other was lost in their own mind, although they may just be talking amongst themself.
Their shadows were more chaotic than ever, almost like his glitches when he was crashing. The room was covered in darkness, even with the overhead lights turned on. The shadows stretch unnaturally, beckoning yet pushing away.
With a sigh, he closed the laptop, setting it down next to himself on the couch. Slowly, he stood up and moved to sit next to Chronic, but as he did, he saw the physical proof of what he already knew. The shadows of the room suddenly sharpened, and the darkness that was crawling its way into the light faded. Chronicâs form became the image of perfection, an identical match to when they first met.Â
Green eyes glanced at him before staring blankly at the cafe again. Barely adjusting on the couch, leaning more of their torso over the back, and resting their head on top of their arms.
Error leaned into the spot next to them, looking out at the cafe with them. Customers coming in and out, trading seats, laughing and talking. It was a normal life that had long since passed him.
â...why are you pulling away?â He eventually spoke, just getting straight to the point. Chronic tensed, and for the first time, he watched as they stuttered through their thoughts.
âI- we⌠stars. Dear, weâŚâ Chronic seemed to practically deflate. Their eye sockets fluttered, barely keeping open as that perfect image fell apart to something more normal. Someone who was just trying to keep it together. Someone like Error.
A shadowy wing stretched out, and there was a long moment of silence.
âWe canât.â
âChronic, love ya but missed out on a lot of that. I doubt you're saying âI canât pull awayâ.â
âDear⌠you know we can not fuse back together⌠we can not let ourselves fall to that temptation. It is simply better to pull away.â Chronic moved, staring back at him. Green solid eyes slightly wavering, as were the shadows flickering, threatening. However, this threat was merely the sway of a cat's tail.
Chronicâs eyes were their weirdest trait, but he was finally beginning to understand them. The colors showed who was in control of the fusion and whom he was talking to, although context clues carried most of his theories. Despite centuries apart, they all hadnât changed much between timelines.Â
Purple was for Nightmare, often given away by the subtle change of how Chronic held themself. Posture tighter, and their grace more elegant and noticeable. Yellow was for Dream, although telling they were there was more based on speech than anything else. The little âDearsâ and older way of speaking, no âcanâtâ or âitâsâ.
Grim didnât show himself by color, although itâd be fair to bet it would be blue. The God showed himself through form and speech, wings appearing or a soothing and even alluring talk drifting from the fusion. Then Ink was a little more obvious, form shifting shorter and a much more pronounced talk. Exclaiming and bouncing around with brown or black eyes. Their freckles seemed to be more clear when they were out and about as well.
The Error of Chronic? That was far more difficult. For the moment, he just assumed they had the same speech. Although, this left out the color combinations. For now, Magenta meant all of them, and green showed Dream and Nightmare together. A small tribute to Nim it seemed.
Truthfully, it was painfully obvious now that the two were talking to him. It didnât help Chronicâs case that Error had borne witness to Nightmareâs masking before, and Dream seemed to not be much better. He really needs to work with Nightmare and Dream then, help them be more selfish. Stray thoughts of times when Nightmare has pushed down his needs for âwhat has to be doneâ drifted in and he could only imagine how bad Dream could be.
Keeping gentle eye contact with Chronic, he moved to have one arm hold onto the wing around him, and the other reach out to Chronic. Not touching, simply offering his hand, palm up, and sincere expression on his features.
Itâs slow-moving, but trusting as Chronic eases a hand into Errorâs. Green eyes continue to stare back at him.
âWhat do the others think? Since itâs just you two talking to me⌠and Reaps I guess.â Error cracks a smirk, jerking his head to the wing wrapped around him.
Chronic sighs and their eyes go fuzzy before splitting apart into pixels. All the colors merge in the red background to an odd shade of magenta.
âTheyâre idiots.â Was all he got for a moment, before a new voice came along, âI, shit- We donât want to lose you again! We just got all of you back!â Chronicâs other hand moved, clutching tight to Errorâs. âAgreed, it was agonizing torture without you all. I think weâd be just as uncoordinated and difficult as when we first fused if we left you again.â
The words hang in the air for a moment, and Chronic seems to fall more and more. Expression exasperated, but nothing more is said.
â...What about other me?â Chronic blinked a few times but eventually bowed their head before rising tall, sapphire eyes gazing back at him tiredly.
âWhat of it, glitch?â There goes the red theory he had. Maybe Hearts was onto something with that nickname.
âDonât you have an opinion on all this? I⌠I donât know how different we are.â
â...I know ya donât.â
He would, wouldnât he? Maybe he was the one saying that all this time? Stars was he oblivious, Chronic never spoke in IâsâŚ
âHeh, you were the one saying that all this time?â
â...Yeah. Yeah, I was.â Chronicâs tenseness seemed to slowly slip away, and they moved their gaze to the cafe, their head following, but hands still in his. âIn the beginning, we were similar⌠down to the detail, but after ya nâ Hearts separated, we did too.â What little Error could see of their eyes were fuzzy, but there was a slightly sad smile on their face, barely made out underneath the shadows and freckles.
Chronic continued: âYa met Core far before I did⌠Core answered your questions⌠ya met Grim faster than I had⌠spent time with him as Sans⌠Even dated âim quicker than me. Ya met Life, met Mercy, and met Magic when I only met âem all after I was sane again.âÂ
It was near mind-shattering to realize how little Chronic had in his past life, all the support and companionship that kept Error going just wasn't there at all for them.
Chronic tilted their head, eyeing Error from the corner of their socket.Â
â...I dealt more with that asshole Gaster than you, but Ink made it worthwhileâŚâ Their eyes glitched for a moment before maintaining their blue hue. âI spent my time remembering with Ccino⌠He nâ I were extremely close in my multiverse⌠heâs the one that convinced me to open The OutsiderâŚâ thereâs a waver in their voice, but he moves on, âI didnât hide away in a realm, my multiverse didnât have them. I hid away in the antivoidâbut got caught, so I moved to the save screenâto get caught again, and everyone found me in the ruins of my timelineâŚâ
Chronic shrugged, breaking eye contact: âAfter that, to put it briefly, it was awkward⌠I didnât have the connection to Dream and Ink like ya, or even Grim. We hung out at Lifeâs but that was pretty much it. Nightmare and I got close at some point though⌠What other differences will there be? I donât know. None of us do. There are countless across all of you.â
The silence stretched once more, but it wasnât one of tension, it was a sort of quiet relief. To think of the centuries that they had to keep that to themself, maybe even from the rest of the fusion.
âOh? Error?â Chronic spoke up, barely turning to Error, calming eyes washing an embracing aura of tranquility over him. âDonât think wrong about this and do not take in our mistakes. I told you of this so you would not be in the dark any longer. No. Other. Reason.â They glare, crowding him in before leaning back, moving their hands to rest in their lap, âIâve come to terms with the differences over the centuries, and if anything, the only thing you should take from this is to be grateful for what you haveâŚâ
Chronic smirked, gentle and wise eyes peering down, âIt can always be better, and it can always be worse. We gotta live with what we got and make the most out of it. Take that lesson to soul, alright?â
Chronic didnât give him a moment to speak, getting up from the couch, the wing wrapped around Errorâs shoulders moving to scoop him up and pull him to Chronicâs side. A portal sprung before them, and the ever playful fucker just continued to smirk.
âItâs about time we get heading back, ainât it?â
âPft, couldâa given me more of a warninâ, you jerk.â He smiled in return before walking through.
The bustling warm cafe turned into the static castle. Dust drifting in the sunlight of the windows and floorboards creaking. The runner carpet scuffled as he made room for Chronic to step through, and he chuckled to himself at the distant noise of steps and voices. A welcomed signal that their return wasnât unnoticed.
The change was always a little startling, but it had grown to be a comfort. It was nice to have people to return home to, so many that cared so much about him and he returned it likewise.
His lovers rounded the corner, and Ink bolted into his arms.
âYouâre back!â They both take a moment to just hold tight as Ink nuzzles close into his neck, and he can feel his soul preening at the loving intent cascading from the shorter.
âOh, ya missed me, Inky?â
âObviously!â Ink pulled back, âWhere were you two anyway?â
Dream and Nightmare finally caught up, Death likely out on a job and the gang who knew where. It seemed Nightmare was getting more comfortable as of late, happily uncorrupted with a sly smile and a blushing Dreamâs arm around his waist.
âIâd bet you were out on those errands of yours again, never did find out what you did on thoseâŚâ Nightmareâs smile grew wide and innocent.
âEh, nothing much.â Error shrugged with an innocent smile of his own. âJust a lilâ secret I like to keep up to date on.â
âOh? And Chronic is allowed to go with you?â Nightmare spoke playfully, turning his attention to Chronic.
âA secret is a secret our dear night.â Chronic playfully spoke, shrugging as they turned and walked away. âWeâll leave ya to deal with that.â
âWell then,â Nightmare pouted, before turning back to Error, âMay I ask what itâll take to learn of this little secret of yours?â
Little was an understatement. At times it took far too much work to keep things under wraps.
He tapped his chin, looking around and about as if thinking. Honestly, he had thought about telling them a couple of times, especially more so now than ever. He wants them to be able to meet Sydney and give Nightmare the chance to see the cafe, and to bring Ccino up there tooâbut not as Lapse, as Error.
There was still the lingering problem, while Lapse was largely loved, Error was equal parts hated if not entirely despised. Heâs not a welcome face and outright telling Dream and Ink would likely hurt them as well as disrupt Omega. Having to choose between keeping Omega safe and him is never a decision he wants to have to make, and he never wants them to come anywhere close to it.
However⌠there was one way it could work.
âA peace treaty.â Nightmare blinked, and Dream seemed shocked, as did Ink. âAn official one, not the truce that you set up while searchinâ for me.â
âWait- wait. You need a peace treaty to tell us why youâre going out on⌠errands?â Ink explained, âIsnât that a little muchâ I mean, yeah, peace treaties and all, butâŚâ they gestured with their hands vaguely.
âTa be honest, âs a little more than errands.âÂ
Ink looked as if they wanted to speak more, however, Nightmare spoke first.
âThat should be reasonably easy.â The God pulled himself from Dreamâs side, âBefore the truce I was thinking of going straight-â Ink chuckled, catching Nightmare off guard, who huffed a laugh before continuing, â-straight to making a peace treaty, and I may still have the draft.â
âWhy didnât we just do a peace treaty then?â Dream questioned
âItâs got a lot more legal hurdles than a truce, clearing names then working with telling the public and scheduling that and so forthâŚâ Nightmare rolled his eyes, âBut Iâve waited for ages to sate this curiosity. Another week or so wonât hurt.â
â--
When he agreed to the peace treaty, he didnât expect to see this.
All things considered, the peace treaty went well. The Star council was completely on board with the idea, as were the main politicians of Omega. The issues came with planning the announcement ceremony.
The first issue came with the anxiety of it all. While the gang and council had been able to smooth things over, it doesnât change the fact that for a good decade, the gang was hated and attacked on siteâwhich multiplies into centuries for Nightmare. For Error, it wasnât as difficult.Â
He knows Omega like the back of his hand, and he knows of all the issues the place has. The folk of the city were backless and when push comes to shove, yes they are survivors but they also live off the drama of the council and what few celebrities and politicians there are.
If you make it to the edges of town, as long as you can hold your own, there can be nicer people. Ones that want to live their lives peacefully and truly build a community. He trusts that in the end, Sydney would trust himâError or Lapseâand would happily help hide Error, Nightmare, and the gang until they could properly get out of Omega.
Who he worried over the most though--Nightmare aside--was Cross.
For all of the trips so far into Omega, xey would go rigid and guard-like. Still as a statue until talked to and always by either Killerâs or Errorâs side. He knew they had been alone for a long time before ending up with Nightmare but had never seen how bad it affected them. He had a small hunch, judging by when he came backâsince they didnât seem to make any friendsâbut this just all-out confirmed things.
Even now, standing behind the curtains as the crowd gathered outside, xey stood still and vigilant.
For the announcement of the truce, they took up most of the park. A stage was built as well as a curtain made room behind with tents for people to gather. He knew Nightmare and Dream had taken one of them to reread through the treaty one more time before the ceremony and Core and Chronic had stolen another. The gang was scattered with the friends they had made in the council, and per Crossâ pushing, Killer had split off as well.
For the time, Error mostly stood off in a corner, an arm wrapped over Crossâ shoulders as they watched whatever people were hired for the event run around and others mingle.
âHey, kiddo?â Cross stiffened, before relaxing a tad, looking up at Error but glancing at the small crowd every few seconds, âI can tell ya ainât doing the best.â
Cross winced, hunching in on themself and looking away.
âItâs that obvious?â Error shrugged, he wasnât going to worry him more.
âYa worried about people?â Cross didnât respond, still avoiding his eyes.
He looked back over the crowd, letting his eyes scan through everything and everyone. Most he recognized, few were unknown. He spotted Sydney at the food table laid out as well as some of his workers. Keeping treats and drinks warm or cold as well as making sure everyone was drinking water and not feeling too nervous for the event. A good spider donut always was a great distraction.
He crouched down to nearly Crossâ height, the other snapping xeir attention over and upon seeing each other eye to eye, turned away.
âThe curtains are heavy, not easy to move.â He started, to which Cross straightened again, looking out at the impromptu setup they were in, âA sharp bone attack could easily break through it though, looks to only be cotton- but, if you look upâŚâ He saw Cross move to look out of the corner of his socket, â...and to the corner is the connection point. A bone or a blaster could break any of these sections apart for an easy escape.âÂ
Cross relaxed more. â...I actually got someone here on my side,â Cross turned to look at him, confusion clear on their expression. Understandable since theyâd both been standing in the corner since they all first arrived. âOne of the workers has my back, and when push comes to shove, sheâd hide us and cover our backs.â
With that backup plan in place, Cross finally rested xeir stiff pose, a hesitant smile appearing.
âThanks, dad.â
âAny time, kid.â
An employee ran into Coreâs tent, before swiftly running back out. â...Think itâs gonna start soon.â
Cross inhaled shakily, before sighing.
â...fun.â
Core stepped out of their tent, Chronic following in toe, and everyone turned to look.
âThank you, everyone, for coming out and making this possible.â Core began, a brighter smile than heâd ever seen on their face. âFrom employees and volunteers to the kind workers from The Outsider for coming out to cater,â Sydney nodded with a sly smirk, âto the Star Council and Nightmare and his gang, again, thank you.â
Core clapped their hands together, a hopeful expression overtaking.
âNow! Itâs time for us all to get up on stage. They are seats for us all up there, staff will direct which side you are to be on- for the gang, do not fret about what the crowd thinks. They have already been made aware that this is a peaceful event, and just in case security measures have been made.â
One by one, the Stars made their way up the small staircase to the stage, Hearts following Blue with a wink to Error.
Then, with Nightmare in front and Error following, they made their way out from behind the curtain and onto the main stage.
The crowd was loud and bustling but went deadly quiet as they stepped out. Only the smallest of coughs or a few people clearing their throat was heard as they took their seats. Hearts looked oddly out of place, standing behind Blueâs chair, and then an empty chair on Nightmareâs side.
Death, Core, and Chronic all walked out, standing together before the podium.
âEveryone,â Chronic boomed, not even bothering to talk into the mic, their voice easily projecting over the crowd. âTake your seats.â
Somewhat jokingly, Reaper floated in the air, mimicking sitting in a chair. However, what drew everyoneâs attention was Hearts.
Leaning down, Hearts gave blue a chaste kiss, before pulling out his ring necklace from under his shirt. Then, he stood back up and walked over to the empty seat on Nightmareâs side.
The crowd erupted in gasps, and Dream and Ink seemed to gawk at Blue who just stared dreamy-eyed after Hearts. The rest of the council looked equally as shocked, while the only reaction on Nightmareâs side was Killer giving Hearts a fist bump.
âTimes are changing.â Core spoke clear into the mic, bringing back everyoneâs attention. âAfter centuries of fighting between positivity and negativity; destruction and creation, we can finally have peace. This will bring in a new age, and itâs one Iâm excited to see grow and change everything for the better.â
Core moved the mic over to Chronic, who takes it gingerly.
âWe have long lived in the background.â Chronic began, speaking carefully into the mic, âItâs safe to say, and there is doubtfully any disagreement, that these sides have torn apart the multiverse.â There are quiet murmurs of agreement across the mass, âAt the beginning of the multiverse, and for nearly half of the existence of the Omega Timeline, there were no sides. There were just the gods. Omega was a place for new starts and a hub for the AUs and what few lost their worlds.â
Chronic grew more confident, speaking with purpose.
âThose times were abandoned at some point, and itâs not better. Itâs worse. Weâve forgotten that while negativity can be terrible-â Nightmare inhaled, sneakily grabbing Errorâs hand, â-it is needed. The powers of the multiverse and its Gods should not be limited to sides, as they work on multiple spectrums. Please, heed this as the peace treaty goes into effect and the multiverse adjusts. It will take time, but it will also be for the better.â
Chronic moved the mic back over to Core, who signaled for Nightmare and Dream to come up.
Together, they started to read out the peace treaty, and he could see them hold their hands together behind the podium.
âI, Nightmare, promise to stop the spread of negativity and let things occur naturally. Negativity can be evil, but it is nature.â He could barely make out Nightmare gripping tighter, and Dream clenching his hand back, âIt is the fight or flight I have had to live with for the entirety of my long life, and itâs a force that many of you have likely experienced. Itâs the anxiety that manifests in us, itâs the anger we feel for right and wrong reasons. It cannot be defined as one simple thing as we have for so long. It is not the evil that it is presented as. It is the push that gives our lives the greatest highs after we have felt at our lowest.â
Dream nodded, a bright genuine smile stretching from cheek to cheek.
âI, Dream, promise to stop the spread of positivity and let things occur naturally.â There were distraught murmurs amongst the crowd, but Dream held fast. Raising a hand to signal for silence with a high chin, he continued, âPositivity makes us happy, but it can be evil. People can be happy doing cruel, unspeakable things. In addition, too much happiness prevents the process of life. It takes away grieving,â Dream turned to look at Nightmare, âand undermines the loss of loved ones. It takes away the guilt of doing something wrong, the anger at somebody wrong, and it can make us forget to be thankful for what we have, by forgetting what was lost.â
With that final note, together the two raised their joined hands, showing their unity to everyone. The crowd begins to boom as they clap, but the show was not over.
Nightmare slowly bows his head sighing softly, barely heard on the mic, and the negativity covering him drips away. When the negativity is fully gone, Nega reforms next to Nightmare, who raises his head.
Nightmare extends a hand, turning to look at Nega, and the crowd, as well as the star council, go silent in shock. The large gaping hole in the side of Nightmareâs skull settled in their minds. It spoke volumes of how Nightmare's trust for Dream had grown, his entire blind side facing the crowd that had caused him so much anxiety the past days.
Nega takes Nightmare's hand, and the two raise it together.
Itâs quiet for a moment, but slowly, hesitant claps start, before it's thundering with applause. Workers start to cue them behind the stage, and they all gather by the snack bar.
Before any conversation can start, even before Hearts can make his way back to Blue, a council member barrels into Nightmareâs arms.
"My boy! Oh- I missed ya!" Nightmare laughs, hugging Sci back. Everyoneâs mouths fell to the floor, except for Error.
"So this is what ya meant by saying Sci took ya in. Wow 'mare, can't believe ya hid ya dad from us."
"Well, there's the small problem of-"
"Oh? Night, have ya finally found yourself someoneâŚâ Sci looks over at Ink, Death, and Dream, â...Someones? Why didn't you tell me!"
"That problem."
âWha- Sci??â Dream finally speaks up, âWhen? When?!â Tone exasperated and surprised.
âOh, I took Nightmare in ages ago! I think you were in stone at the timeâŚâ Sci recounts with a laugh, âWe havenât been able to meet up since all of this craziness started, but Iâm glad I can finally see you again!â
âYes, yes, Iâm glad to see you too⌠but there was an initial reason for this peace treaty.â Nightmare directs his attention to Error. âCan you finally tell us this big secret of yours? All the errands??â
Error huffs a laugh, crossing his arms.
âIâm getting put on the spot now, arenât I?â
âYes, you are. I spoke in front of that crowd, you blab your secret in front of a few dozen people.â
âYeah, thatâs fair.â Error shrugged, âIn my defense, all of you are more likely to kill me over this than that crowd.â
The gang shifts from side to side, and the star council is even more so confused. All of themâDream and Ink asideâtrying to turn their back on the conversation in favor of the food table, but still looking back for the gossip. The confusion of Hearts and Blue gone for the moment in favor of Error.
âOkay, really. How bad can it be?â Ink speaks up, a little pout on his face.
With a sigh, Error takes off his glasses, pocketing them, and pulls out his second pair and those little cards for the VIP loft of the outsider.
Crossâ eyes go wide and he stares at Error, but no one else quite understands. He can see Sydney peering at him from behind the food table.
â...Cards for the outsider? You know Mode?â Dream began hesitantly.
With an exaggerated roll of his eyes, he pulls the Omega ID for Lapse from one of his pockets and sets it on the table with the glasses.
No one says anything still, but Ink and Dream seem to be piecing things together.
âI- âŚI donât understand.â Dream eventually stutters.
âOh stars, fine.â And he pulls up the panel for Lapse, letting all of them see it as he clicks the button.
His body glitches, and an unimpressed Lapse Divinity Mode in Errorâs clothes stands before them. The room is shocked into silence, and one of his workers pouring a coffee even stops. If everyone keeps dropping their jaws like this theyâll need to tie it to their head. âYa get it now?â
The room stays in silence, until Sydney walks up.
âBoss?â
âHey, sorry I couldnât tell ya⌠or came back sooner.â
âNo, no. Again, donât worry- donât even think about it⌠but, damn.â She folds two of her arms as her third rests on her hip, âHonestly⌠Nah, this makes sense. Guessing that secret menu of yours has a backstory with these folks?â
The gang finally pulls themselves together, and Killer yells: âYouâre Lapse D. Mode?!!â
âI thought you said you didnât know him!â Dust follows
Error sighs, laughing as everyone recovers. Death just smiles slyly, off to the side, which Dream and Ink begin to notice.
âYeâeah, it was pretty hard to cover up. I still donât know how I managed it. I even made Dreamâs outfit at the base.â Dreamâs eyes go wider, and he just covers his face as some moments start to click in. âProblems over there, pretty boy?â
â...Shut. Up.â Is all Dream musters, but the bright yellow peeking out from behind his hands is enough reward.
-----
THEY FINALLY KNOW ERROR IS LAPSE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS CHAPTER FOR AGES
Also: I wanted to share the notes I have for this chapter. Not exactly what happened, but still funny.
For the ceremony, Hearts starts off at Blue's side, attached to his arm. But as Dream and Nightmare step up and ask everyone to get to their places, the crowd gasps as Hearts pecks Blue on the cheek and moves to stand with the gang. Blue watches with a lovestruck gaze as Hearts walks away. Ink and Dream gawk at Blue who just shrugs innocently, fiddling with his ring.
-
There is a celebration afterwards, and before anyone can pester Error with questions, Sci sprints over embracing Nightmare.
"My boy! Oh- I missed ya!" Nightmare laughs, hugging Sci back.
Everyone is confused, especially Dream. Error is only confused for a moment before speaking up: "So this is what ya meant by saying Sci took ya in. Wow 'mare, can't believe ya hid ya dad from us."
"Well there's the small problem of-"
"Oh? Night, have ya finally found yourself someone... someones? Why didn't you tell me!"
"That problem."
-
He doesn't really reveal it. Just dramatically sighs and rolls his eyes, before pulling up a panel and clicking a button. Switching his form to a normal Sans, pulling a wallet and his other glasses out of his pocket and shrugging as the Star Sans look aghast at him being Lapse D. Mode.
Cobalt is the most shocked by far, and even reboots for a moment. Blue pulls him away carefully and helps him through it, so does Hearts.
Cross is stuttering in the background and Error just casually strides up as Lapse and just chuckles, "How's it goin, Chrome?"
Mention in notes of post-Because this is too damn funny to keep to just us.
Another day, more emails. It was a mix of calming and frustrating. Centuries of being immortal, yet here he was acting like he was just another mortal checking through his emails and trying to get through the work day. Reading through all of them was a pain, but handfuls were wholesome. Sydney kept him updated on whatever employee drama was happening and the growing fanmail was always nice to see in the heaps of trash.Â
Omega for the time all agreed that Lapse had some horrible accident of some sort happened caused him to pull away, although rumors still spread of exactly what. Error just had to nod and roll his eyes as Ink tried to explain all the rumors to him. Anything from family tragedy to a secret lover, although, technically neither of those were wrong.
Even Dream talked about Lapse at times, but less of the rumors and of the times they hung out and how much Dream missed him. It was heartwarming to hear Dream talking about all the good times they had, but in the end, he just had to shrug with a smile, saying how good of a guy he sounded.
All of the stories just reminded him of everything he left behind as Lapse, and he desperately wanted to make it to the cafe in person, but it would be hard. Heâd gotten better with smaller rooms, so that wasnât much of an issue anymore. Heâd even gotten to the point where he was nearly ready to move back into his room, back to his little safety corner. The main concern he had was making the time to leave for so long.
He could convince Death to be by his side since he and Ccino knew about Lapse, but then he had to make time away from everyone else as Error. Or he could convince Reaper to do a date cover story? That could probably workâŚ
âYouâre really lost in thought, arenât you?â Heartsâ voice chuckled, pulling him from his thoughts, âWelcome back to the mortal realm, Error.â
âUh⌠yeah. Sorry.â He spoke slowly, closing his laptop and setting it to the side.
âOh, no need for that, darling. Probably lots in that amazing skull of yours- but, to the point, Iâve been wanting to talk.â Hearts smiled softly, âYou okay with my office? Want a place that Ink and Dream wonât really walk in on.â
âOh-â While Nightmare and Death knew of his past with Hearts, Dream and Ink had yet toâand were still unaware of Hearts' alliance to Nightmare, âYeah, I should be able to.â
In a short time, they made it up to Hearts office. The place had hardly changed since last he was in there, the room still decently large, Hearts desk in a corner and the closet turned into its own personal snack station. Hearts pulled the both of them over to some bean bag chairs in the corner, handing Error some chocolate and settling in before starting up the conversation.
âI figured since your memories are over and youâre doing better, itâs about time I answered whatever question about the past you have, and let you know what things I had a hand in.â
â...What all did you help with?â
âSurprisingly? Not a lot.â Hearts huffed a laugh, âI was almost as clueless as you, the only thing I knew was not to explain your mistake, whatever it is, and that if I did, you would spend ages wasting your life trying to find a different answer. Iâd lose you, everyone around you would lose youâŚâ Hearts sighed, âThe only thing I had a hand in aside from teaching you about the multiverse and Omega was Gaster.â
Error eyes finally drifted to meet Hearts, and the otherâs expression was sincere as ever. His intent honest and kind, âSome Gasters are downright horrible, to everyone or just their sons, if they are connected to the Sans and Papyrus at all⌠Most are just complicated people like anyone else, sometimes doing bad things and sometimes good⌠a lucky few pull themselves back before they get to that point. I was tasked with letting Gaster know of his coming death, and he did what Core expected.â Hearts smiled wide and genuine, âHe spent as much of his last time with you and everyone else in the underground as he could.â
Errorâs cheeks began to burn, but he still smiled, nibbling away at his chocolate. âHe was a great guy, and despite what you probably think, heâd be proud of you.â
I honestly donât care if you never have a lover, or if you make a lot of friends, I just want you to be happy and have people that you can fall back on and trust.
âYeah⌠he would.â He eventually murmured.
They basked in silence for a time, before a question came to Error. âWhat⌠howâd you do after we broke up?â Hearts raised a brow, a shocked expression, âI- I just heard about you building up Omega, and now youâre engaged to Blue⌠might as well ask.â
âPfft, oh.â Hearts chuckled, âJust⌠wasnât expecting that.â He mulled over it for a moment, before explaining, âWell, honestly. Life was fucking shit, I probably wouldn't have gotten through it without Classic and Fell. I poured all the emotion I had into Omega, building everything up.â
Hearts sighed like a weight was coming off his chest, âA couple of things at Omega that got their names because of you, actually. There's Sapphire avenue, Passion park, and Wingdings square.â Hearts listed, âBlue⌠Well, he came along a little later. About the time you were Geno, I think.âÂ
Hearts laughed softly, âHe wasâand still isâkind to me, pulling me away from work and convincing me to rest. He helped me when everyone in my AU passed away, and eventually Honey and Blue sort of took me in.â
Hearts smile went wider, a blush on his cheeks, âStars, I spent far too many nights in Blueâs bed before we actually became a couple⌠but my blue-bear fought away whatever night terrors I had⌠although it still took a fair decade for me to accept how much I loved him. And then Cobalt was a happy addition a few centuries ago.â
Hearts looked up, locking eyes, âI know itâs a little touchy⌠but, I know he would like to talk to you too.â
Cobalt wanted to talk? With him? Was he even ready for that?
Even if Ink and Dream insisted that Cobalt didnât blame him, there was still some guilt in his soul from it. Not that pit that pulled him in, but rock that he could barely swallow down.
âError?â Hearts spoke up, pulling him from his thoughts again, âYou donât have to if you donât want to-â
âNo. No- I⌠he at least deserves to speak to me⌠especially since Iâve been avoiding him for so longâŚâ
Hearts nodded, standing up and creating a portal in front of them, letting Error walk through first. The farm was as grand as ever, the bright sunny day near blinding. Hearts appeared by his side, and with a kind smile, turned and walked away, making a small âfollow meâ gesture.
Cobalt and Blue worked inside, both talking happily while grooming the horses, the little calf Spots from last time snoozing away at Cobaltâs feet. The chicken clucked and balked as Hearts walked forward towards them, and Error lingered at the doorway.
He could see Cobalt hug Hearts, and Blue walking over to pull Hearts in for a chaste kiss before hugging him close as well. As the two lingered in their hug, Errorâs eyes drifted to Cobalt, standing with a hesitant smile.
Error did his best to return it, and Cobalt seemed to take it as an invitation to walk over.
âHey⌠Error.â
â...Uhm, heyâŚâ Cobalt huffed a laugh, â...uh, what?â
âSorry, just weird to see how youâve changed, how weâve both changed really.â Cobalt laughed further, and Error hesitantly chuckled along with him, âBut, despite all of that⌠I hope you know I donât hate you.â Cobalt spoke honestly, his intent brimming with it. âAnd in a joking way, guess I was kinda right? Friendship was your weakness.â
âYour true weakness! That weakness? Friendship!â He feels the crash come on and leave faster than the last, he blinks away the glitches to no avail. Sans continues to talk, âAh-ha! Knew it! But thatâs okay! Iâm here! Iâll help by being your first friend! Câmere Error! Gimme a big new friend hug!â
The laugh bubbles up and out before he can even process it, and Cobalt joins in with him.
When they both eventually calm down, Cobalt continues, âDespite all these sides and everything, it was nice to hear about you finally healing from Hearts. It was⌠horrible in that place. Both of us deserve better. And from the sounds of it, you found a lot better!â Cobalt smiled wide, and for a moment, he could practically see his Papyrus doing the same, âGlad you could help out Dream and Ink too. Both of them are always working so hard, but you and Nightmare do them good.âÂ
There was a certain peace and serenity in the broken depths of his realm.
The infinite reaches of his magic pocket space was worse than last. Any places that held any semblance of shape were dismantled. All of it broke down until it was unrecognizable. He could barely tell where the rubble of his lighthouse was, the roots of the tree, and shards from the frozen lake.
The abyss was endless and the sound deafening with how quiet it was, even the shuffle of him moving couldnât break the trance of tranquility he found himself in. It had been so long since he wasnât burdened by the stress of the outside. So long of pain and hurt. So long of too much. Yet, his soul and mind still ached.
His soul was raining with sorrow. No matter where his thoughts lead him he stepped in the puddles of anguish. He couldnât escape the downpour or the thunders of negativity. The storm seemed to have no end, and as time dragged on his soul and thoughts fogged, his vision dusting.
In the safety of his realm, for the first time since his last reboot, Errorâs sockets drifted closed.
His eyes flew back open, back in his realm again, but it was different. Barren of personality. Devoid of the treasures he had added to it, but just as broken. The remnants of the floating island drifted like a wreck in the sea, all the hard work destroyed. A shadow stood on a small rock in the distance, and with nothing better to do, Error stood and slowly made his way over.
Rock by rock, he slowly made his way over, the fuzzy figure didnât get any sharper. The shadows thickened as he got closer.
When he could practically reach out and touch, the shadow began to walk away.
When the shadow was some distance away again they stopped, and Error obediently followed again. The next time the shadow began to walk, Error didnât wait, following the short distance away.
His focus remained on the figure, but as they walked, the background morphed. His beautiful and comfortable realm slowly transitioned.
The rocks and pitiful excuses of islands started to become sturdier. Easier to walk on. The galaxy changed from purples and blues to green. The figure began to change as well, solidifying and splitting apart. The tall shadow fell below his height, the shadows that peeled off of the shorter dashing ahead of them.
He stayed focused on the figure in front of him.
He didnât even realize when the background changed to a forest, hardly aware when it opened to a valley, a large mansion before himâeerily recognizable, but unfamiliar.
Several more figures stood in front of the mansion, bathed in the blue light of a bright day. They were different then what he was used to, but he would always be able to recognize Nightmareâs souls. Dreamâs kind eyes, Reaperâs calming presence, and Inkâs bouncing energy.
The figure he had been following suddenly shifted, a shorter copy of him running forward, practically leaping in the copies of his lovers.
His soul panged, and dust clouded a little more of his vision. Wasnât there a saying about guilt eating away at people? Perhaps it wasnât meant to be literal.
The scene faded to black, then abruptly the sky was grey and the ground dead. Murky with dust and blood. The copies of his team sat in a tight circle, Death lingering a little awayâas if not wanting to get too close, and Error stepped closer.
The copy of him lay on the ground, the painful red scar shining brightly over his clothes, his soul floating above him. The soul flickered and glitched, but it didnât take a genius to see that the copy was melting and dusting. Falling to pieces in the finished battle scene.
He could barely hear footsteps in the distance, and Core watched on, expression much more excited than Error had ever seen. He knew Core was pretty fucked up in the head but excited to watch him die? That wasnât as low as he had seen them go, considering they had literally constructed nearly his whole life, but it still was low.
A bright light flashed the dark scene, and Error turned to see his team's souls shining, Inkâs empty void of a ribcage even flickering with some ghostly apparition. Then, as sudden as it was, the light left and all five of them crumbled to dust.
From the dust, a dark shadow rose, a familiar face standing dazedly. Coreâs excited face had long since dropped to one of disappointment.
âError.â Core spoke flatly, eyes focused on the shadow. For a moment, he was convinced Core had actually made it into whatever dream this was, but that was not the same Core he knew now.
The Core he knew was a blunt jerk. A mastermind that put Nightmare to shame. Someone that didnât express themself. The remains of a person. The facade of a child that had long since died.Â
The shadows pixeled eyes blinked trying desperately to focus.
âWhat-? Core?! You canât be serious- This is as serious as it gets. May we have a moment?â The shadow quickly spoke, different voices trying to talk over each other and failing.
âAs much as I would love to wait another eternityâŚâ Core grit out, tipping their head sarcastically, â âŚYou didnât even get to reach the initial mistake I was trying to get you not to make! You were supposed to-!â
The rest of the words were static, and Chronicâs eyes were wide with shock and he could feel the guilt and negativity wafting from their uncontrolled aura. It made his soul clench further.
Core seemed to finish their rant, anger burning out as soon as it started.
âCore⌠I am- we are so sorry⌠We did not know-â
âYou werenât supposed to. If I coordinated everything you did it wouldnât work for the right end. Even if you were willing.â Core sighed, hundreds of screens suddenly appearing before them with the simple tap of an invisible panel.
The whole area was surrounded by black boxes and white text. Stats of the multiverse, of other multiverses, of characters and outcodes alike. Core conducted their personal symphony, moving the screens around until only a few were left before them.
One screen seemed to hold a journal, an unfinished entry marked with a long string of numbers. How long had Core been at this? How many multiverses were sacrificed for Core to try and reach this âperfect endâ of theirs?
Their other panels seemed less important, an inventory with few belongingsâjust a photo and a few drawingsâand a check of Chronic. He knew their stats well. He could feel the LV and power they held back. The aura they carefully kept controlled. However, while the stats were the same, the check was not what he expected at all.
It was definitely Chronic before them, he could recognize that bastard anywhere, but the name of the check was jumbled. Multiple names were layered over each other. He could see the letters for Nightmareâs, the short overlay of Inkâs, the jumble of his name and Dreamâs together, and the length of Grim Reaperâs.
The check read simply, â*The failed team. A confused fusion. A powerful god. *They are confused and donât mean to disappoint. They did what was best in the moment.â
The fourth panel was the most worrisome. Not even a panel at all, but a glowing purple button, one he has felt the power of within Core for centuries, one that he lost track of ages ago.
âSans. Trust me, you do not want this burden⌠Even being the keeper of such a thing until itâs to be returned to its proper owner is a terrible fate.â
OVERWRITE floated before them and Core sighed, hand-held still and poised over the button.
âError, Dream, Nightmare, Ink, Grim, I will give all of you one more chance, but you will not like it.â Core began. Their head moved up from where they had been staring directly at the button.
Their arm fell, and Core stood tall and stiff. âI will let you follow me into the next multiverse, as I need to reset this one, but you have to help me.â The fusion seemed confused, and Core continued, âI will have to take pieces of your soul, to make the new Sans, Nim, Ink, and the star that will become Grim. While I direct Error and help Grim in the early years of the multiverse, I will need your help to set things up and keep the multiverse in balance.â
âWait- Wait-! Youâre going to take apart mine-his-theirs? Our souls?!â The fusion stuttered, uncoordinated.
âYes, I cannot remake the powers of the original Error nor the others, so I have to reuse the same character each time⌠due to your fusion, this will be more troublesome⌠I hope the mixed powers donât affect the next team that muchâŚâ Core thought aloud.
âBut- the taking apart the souls thing?â One voice spoke up, Inkâs voice muddled but identifiable.
âWell, I would imagine that your fusion would never feel correct ever again. I cannot allow you all to fuse together again, as it would disrupt the multiverse and by the time you could fuse togetherâthe two sets of multiverse timeline memories would completely jumble your memory. I couldnât even make a guess at how long youâd stay out of commission, and the multiverse would fall to pieces while you would be out.â
Chronicâs expression dropped to disbelief and further shock, blank yet full of emotion.
â...Despite that,â Chronic looked over at Core again, âPerhaps it could give you closure? You would have a unique eye that would be able to help out the entire multiverse. You could help make sure that everyone is sure of their actions, that they donât make the same mistake again.â
Coreâs voice seemed to fill with hope, and Chronicâs eyes finally calmed, âWe could make sure that the next multiverse is the very end. Everyone will have their happy end, and this will be the last OVERWRITE.â
That seemed to convince Chronic, and Error watched as the fusion staggered clumsily forwardânothing like the grace he was so used to seeing from themâbefore shaking Coreâs hand.
The dream faded to black again, and the Chronic and Core he knew now stood before him.
Chronicâs golden pendant pulsed before them, their eyes a perfect magenta, and their aura released for the first time in Errorâs presence. He could feel the fullness of their intent, the bittersweet love and sorrow that filled their souls. For such a tall figure, at that moment they seemed so small, so unsure. It was unsettling.
Core stood calmly next to them. Their unkempt hair falling messily over their shoulders, expression relaxed, their aged features prominent in the fake save screen-like space, and their eyes sincere. He had never seen Core so easy-going and relaxed, they seemed more sure than ever that this will be the last multiverse.
That is if this dream wasnât just some fabrication of his negative-filled mind.
âError,â He stayed focused on Core, âWhen the time comes, I am sure you will know what mistake not to make⌠both of them.â Core laughed softly, and Chronic chuckled along with them.
If Chronic can find solace even after dooming their multiverse, then maybe there was hope for him after all. â...Iâll see you in due time.â Core finally finished, and the dream faded to reality.
It was uncomfortable waking up, his bones ached from being hunched over for so long. His mind was foggy but the dream was still clear. He struggled to grasp any obvious thought.
That explained why he felt so connected to his lovers then⌠Grimâs soulmate nickname was far more literal than he thought.
As the fog cleared, his senses spread back out, encompassing the broken pieces of his realm again.
He barely felt the presence of anyone else, but Nightmareâs souls gave him away. Chronic did say he would help themâŚ
But did he deserve it?
Chronic was a fusion of kind and caring peopleâeven with an Error piloting it. All of the sudden the switching voices and countless powers made sense, even being able to get into his realm without needing Error to let them in. Kind of hard to keep your own soul out of your realmâthe physical manifestation of your soul.
He looked up, watching as Dream, Nightmare, Ink, and Death all tried to navigate the wasteland.
He really was broken then, just like the voices loved to tell him. Down to his very soul. Could he even come back from this? Was it possible?
He could feel it when Nightmareâs eye landed on him, he didnât need to be able to see the other clearly to tell. He could hear the loud commotion of Nightmareâs discovery even over the chaotic tranquility.
Ink leaped and bounced over as Grim flew Dream and Nightmare closer.
They really cared that much, didnât they? Even when it was impossible to tell if he could ever come back. Even as he dusted and melted before everyone's eyes. Even after he destroyed the multiverse and pulled it apart for centuries. Even after he locked Cobalt alone in the Antivoid for who knew how long. Even after he hurt them over and over.
Nightmare mustâve picked up on his emotions, as he seemed to whisper to Reaper.
Death slowed, and in turn Ink did as well. They all stopped some distance away, and Nightmare carefully and slowly made his way closer.
It was a tense silence as they met socket to socket. The gaze Nightmare held him with was still as gentle and reassuring as ever, but the bowl Nightmare was trying to hold was nothing but broken shards and crumbs. Even that amazing caress didnât help.
Nightmare slowly released his aura, and he could feel the calming and caring presence Dream used to talk about. Back before Nightmare was corrupted, far back to when the negative guardianâs aura pulled away negative emotions and soothed them instead of powering the negativity and making the others fall victim to themselves.
Dream did the same, a much less powerful but still soft and caring intent filling the space.
The thoughts slowly became less suffocating, the tight grip of his little ball formation falling, and the feel of their souls not as overwhelming.
Still, no one said anything, even when Errorâs cheeks began to burn with the telltale signs of his tears.
Nightmare slowly inched closer, making sure Error was well aware of him approaching, before sitting in front of Error. Dream, Ink, and Death drifted closer, but were careful to not overwhelm him. His frown curved into a small hesitant smile, and the arm he didnât even know was covering his skull untensed, falling to the floor.
Nightmare slowly moved again, carefully taking Errorâs trembling and scarred hand into one of his own. Slowly and softly, the guardian smoothed a thumb over the old bones, gently caressing. A smile graced Nightmareâs expression. The tense silence fell to quiet.
Errorâs small smile fell, and Nightmare seemed confused.
â...I donât deserve ya all.â His hands trembled more, inching back to his ball, but Nightmare held on. Just like he said he would. Just like he had proved he would time and time again.
Looking back at that wonderful purple eye, it was sharp with understanding. No pity. No disappointment. Maybe some concern. But nothing more.
ââŚThatâs okay.â Nightmare finally spoke, that charming voice soothing the aches and pain in his soul, the clenching terror starting to release.
âWeâŚâ Dream spoke up, and Error turned to him. Dream blushed brightly, breath hitching, but keeping eye contact, âWe⌠Uhm⌠we still- still low⌠loveâŚâ Dream stuttered out, and everyone patiently waited as he worked through it, even as Errorâs tears kicked back up again. Eventually, Dream closed his eyes as his brows tensed in focus, â...We still love you. Eve- even if you donât think you deserve itâŚâ
He wasnât sure if it hurt or healed his soul more to hear that, distant echoes of the realm moving in the distance. Inkâs eyes sparked with emotion.
â...even after everything Iâve done?â
âOh-! Kitten!â Ink exclaimed, making everyone jump. Ink fell to sit next to Error, âCan I hug you- please?â
He breathed out a nervous chuckle at Inkâs sudden exclamation before clenching his jaw, tears welling up and spilling more and more. His soul started to calm, and finally, he let his other arm unclench from his ball, opening to Ink.
To Inkâs credit, they were careful and slow, making sure Error was comfortable, before hugging tight.
âStars, I love youâboth of us really--being dumb, but weâve talked about this!â Ink sighed, nuzzling close and burrowing himself in Errorâs scarf. â...you werenât yourself back then⌠Even the first time we were dating, you never fully recovered your sanity. But I didnât care⌠no matter what you did. Itâs not your fault. Yeah- there are some consequences to some actions, but you donât have to carry all this⌠guilt?â Ink poked her skull up, catching Nightmareâs eye, who nodded. âCarry this guilt with you.â Ink affirmed.
The tears just fell harder.
âBut I- I⌠I hurt-â
âYou didnât mean to hurt us, Soul. Youâre okay.â Death spoke up, his voice wonderful to hear after him being so quiet for so long. Everything he loved about all of them had been gone from him for so long. But he probably deserved that too.
âI⌠uh-â His voice choked up, â...not you allâŚâ He finally grit out, he could feel his soul drop as he finally said the words: âI hurt Cobalt⌠tore him from his home- practically tortured him⌠left him alone in the AntivoidâŚâ
The silence was short, Dream quickly filling it.
âError, we heard a much different story than that.â Dream started, a face of confusion, âInk and I helped Cobalt in his early years adjusting⌠while the Antivoid may have been torture, yes, you werenât.â
âYeah, you werenât yourself back then, remember?â Ink snuggled close into his scarf again, âIâve known it, Cobalt knew it, I filled Goldy in on it⌠later told Songbird and CressyâŚâ Ink pulled back, slowly moving their hands towards Errorâs skull, and holding his skull when Error nodded, â...Itâs okay, Error. We still love you. Always have, always will.â And then Ink leaned forward, chastely kissing him before just resting their foreheads against each other.
It was still a lot to process. Now that it was said and done, it felt laughable how easy all of this couldâve been.
âYou donâ gotta be perfect with us, love.â Nightmare slurred, wincing a little as he hit the chip in his skull. Error's tears came back stronger than before, but this time, he smiled wide.
He still had worries, but for a moment, he didnât have to be perfect. Being Coreâs main character can wait a little bit. The mistake can wait. He just wants to hold his lovers close and fall asleep in their embrace.
With a slight smirk, he unwrapped his arm from Ink and pulled at a trail of his tears, smirking further at Deathâs comical "oh shit" expression and Dreamâs confusion. Carefully, fully expressing his gentle intent, he wrapped up their souls and brought them closer, even tugging Nightmare closer.
Ink smiled, pulling back to shuffle and pull Death and Dream closer, properly getting them close and cuddled on the cracked and uneven ground.
While his lovers moved around, he looked out at his realm. When had it started to piece together again?
The more prominent things were still mostly rubble, but the floating island pulled itself back together, his lake rippling as distant pieces clicked back in place. His lighthouse was still in ruins, but the stairs were intact, the light at the top a beacon of hope in the dark, his tree doubly so.
Nightmare slotted himself next to Error, curling close and resting against Errorâs chest as Ink and Dream hesitantly curled up between all of them, Ink giggling as Deathâs wings tickled and blanketed them all.
Nightmare lifted his skull, whispering into the side of Errorâs skull:
âWeâll always be here for you.â
â...I know.â Nightmare chuckled, pecking Errorâs cheek before relaxing.
He could feel Chronicâs distant presence in the realm, and finally, he let out a breath. Relaxing as well with all his soulmates close by.

Shorter chapter just because I feel the next bit fits better as its own personal chapter. Plus it's gonna be long and I would like to get into bed before 4am. At least right now I consider 2am reasonable. MORE NOTES AT END
The plan was finally in place. It hurt to leave them, but he had to. He couldnât pull them down with him, not when all of them were so amazingâand even more so together. They could do even better without him.
As much as he wanted to escape to the antivoid, he didnât want to forget again. He wasnât ready to fully let go of them. He wanted to keep the happy memories of them, as selfish as it was. Always so selfishâbut he didnât want to start over. He deserves all this negativity. A somewhat suitable punishment for his crimes, the voices were happy to bring up that he deserves worse over and over.
He just wanted to get away from everyone else. There was the voidâbut he didnât want everyone to forget him either. Despite the fucked up mess of his mind, he knew they couldnât be happy that way. If he were to suddenly disappear, it would hurt them, but eventually, they had to stop looking. Eventually, they would give up. When they did, they would have the memories of the past to help them. To ease the loss.
Any other place would be too loud, too much, and far too easy to break into. No, he had to lock himself in his realm. Make sure they could never get in, and make sure he could never hurt them ever again. He had no clue if Core could get in, and he could faintly remember Chronic getting in on their own beforeâbut he could deal with that. As long as he didnât hurt his lovers again.
The most difficult part wasnât figuring out what to do, it was finding the right moment to do it. Hour upon hours Error thought over and over when he could get away: What moment would work best for him to leave without immediate notice?
If he left during the night, while they were all asleep, they would surely know. Nightmare and Dream were surprisingly light sleepers, and Ink didnât sleep all the time either. Then all of them were in tune with his soul and knew it by heart, they would know if he left even if it was just leaving the room.
He would just leave from the greenhouse, he was there practically all dayâbut there was always someone outside now. Dream gardening, Ink painting, Death soaking up the sunâsurprising but he is fundamentally a bird, and Nightmare would do an evening walk around the area before grabbing Error for the night. Then the gang was always out and about, with so little to do, they started playing sports outside, even finding some lake out in the forest surrounding the castle. While they had their pool day, Nightmare stuck by him at the greenhouse. Some excuse that his bones were still healing and the bandages wouldnât mix well with water and exercise.
He wasnât an idiot. As much as he does act dumb at times for the shits and giggles or as a cover, he knew Nightmare had caught on. It was not a simple coincidence that every time someone went into the castleâor ever made their way to itâsomeone would come out. Most of his senses may be lost to the voices, but he can still feel souls just as well as he used toâalthough it was a shock to feel one from Ink. Probably Chronicâs doing. Both Nightmare and they have plenty of souls, one off their back would more likely help than hurt. But that was something that he would have to deal with unanswered.
The only times he could get any opening from was meals. Those times left one person to watch over him, Chronic gazing from the back porch. Chronic was the only one that had the best chance of stopping him, but they were also the only one he had the best chance of escaping.
Chronic could weasel their way into anything, letting their voice drift and whisper and convince Error to put off leaving for another day. Horror was baking tonight, chocolate chip cookies. Cross wanted to read with him. Hearts was bringing out some fabrics to try and help with his texture issues. Killer wanted to bring out the kittens to play and explore. Dust just perfected a soul relaxer, blissfully easing any pains. Ink managed to make a blanket and wanted to show it off. Dream had found some new plants that made the most beautiful tea. Nightmare was going to take him out on a walk.
He put it off for days and days, but each day hurt more. They were doing everything in their power to give him a reason to stay, trying to find anything that could convince him it was worth it to stay. Day after day it just hurt his soul more and more. After a few weeks, he could swear he felt his soul cracking and falling apart.
He could feel himself dusting at times, watching as the particles glitched on and off his body. His soul was giving up on him, but he still couldnât die.
When Chronic saw the glitching particles, they said nothing. For once, they had nothing at all to say. No reason for him to stay. No âone more dayâ. Instead, they offered a hand and helped Error up.
It was picture-perfect. The sun was just below the horizon, casting everything in a golden glow. It painted Chronic in a much kinder light than Error was used to.
He could see sparks of yellow in their magenta eyes, their smoking cheeks much softer, and the flames of their body cooled like a fire burning out. Tame, peaceful, surrendered. Waiting for the wind to sweep it out or someone to build it back up.
He still couldnât find it in his soul to care, and his body glitched more, dust wafting in the air.
Chronic sighed, before taking Errorâs hands in their own, another pair of limbs forming from their shadows and gently holding his shoulder and back, caressing him lovingly. For once, it didnât hurt.
âWe canât stop you. We know that, and weâre sure you know it as well⌠but just because we cannot stop you, does not mean we will not help the others. That we will not help your team.â Something in his expression mustâve changed because Chronic's sorrowful frown turned to a serious line, âYou have a week. Just one. Before we come after you. Sit on things, think on things, and we will see you in your dreams.â
The pair of arms holding him dropped, and the hands holding his own sparked with the colors of a murky rainbow. Blue, brown, green, and red flash for a moment before fading like miniature fireworks.
A portal opened below his feet, and he fell into his realm.

Blood for the blood god. Rest in peace king. (I will admit this chapter was ridiculously late because I was rewatching his old streams)
I made an analogy on ao3 that I feel is worth copy pasting so enjoy:
Also the pawn thing from the summary? If this were a chest board, the big bag unnamed evil would be the white queen. Core a white king (rebellious against the queen and acting as another black king) Error a black Queen (not bc of crayon queen funny enough) Chronic black king, then the gang + blue/hearts/cobalt black pawns, Cross I have to leave unnamed for lore purposes--for now I will just say grey knight, Nightmare and Dream black bishops, Death a knight, and Ink a rook.
Take that as you will I'll do further explanation after the series is over bc holy shit chess actually accurately explains the roles of everyone and I just now realized it.
I'm not sorry. At all. Good luck. I have my keg of tears prepared and ER dialed, prepare for your hearts to be crushed and tears to be shed.
---
Whatever Error was doing, it seemed to work well. Each day he made others happy.
He spent days with Ink in his lap as they drew, holding them close even as his glitches writhed and scratched at his bones. At moments, he began to lose himself in the glitches, but it was worth it every time to see the Creatorâs soft smile and her gently kiss away the glitches. Then when all the glitches were finally calm he would lean in and wrap up the intent-filled attentions with a final chaste kiss.
Ink was always so kind about it, talking still hurt to do so much, digging into his soul every time he opened his mouth. Ink had voice enough for the both of them, rambling on and on as they worked, the process was always so wonderful to see, and watch as Ink worked with anything and everything. Starting from many shapes and pulling them all together into unique abstract works or carefully shading and penciling in a realistic drawing.
Other days he let himself be wrapped up in Deathâs wings, just simply existing together. After so long of being apart, it felt awfully fulfilling to be so close. They could go hours just contently cuddling. Sometimes, his mind didnât want to stay blankâthe paranoia far from gone. Some days he could swear he could hear them. Hear the voices words, hear their shrieking cries and insults but every time he would snap back to his skull in Reaperâs hands. Empty eye sockets gazing at him, one of the few forms of eye contact he was okay with handling now.
His cheeks burned whenever he snapped back. The voices just suddenly disappearing. Nothing but the sounds of life in the castle. The quiet sounds of the fridge working in the kitchen, maybe echoed creaking floorboards as someone walked around upstairs. Perhaps even a breeze coming in if the day was nice enough, the sounds of wildlife drifting in.
He hated when he drifted off from the others, but he loved the moments with them. Even if his body felt rubbed raw from the glitches after.
It started as a one-off kind of thing, but soon weekly after dinner Error sat posted at the island in the kitchen. He would carefully read out the recipe for Nightmare and Horror as they went about the kitchen baking. A small smile shyly crept on his skull and grew every time Nightmare passed by, always leaving a kiss in his wake. A little kiss on the top of his skull, one on his cheekbone, another on the rim of his glassesâhis partners always assured he looked absolutely handsome with them onâand finally each time he spoke up he was treated to a soft chaste kiss. It was surprisingly domestic, and secretly he reveled in it whenever Horror rolled his eye.
It eased him back into eating too, and bonus points for distracting him so easily. The company was wonderful, the tranquil noise of the kitchen and banter between each other always made him forget about everything. From the size of the room to his dilemma to what he was planning. Heâll make sure theyâre happy.
He went as far as training with Cross. His magic sparked and fizzled and refused to work, but that never stopped him. Each session with Cross he chose a new weapon to try out, picking up somethingâanything at allâfrom their little weapons closet and making it work for him. The voices prickled at the back of his mind, if only he had the much control and vigor with his magic.
If his footing was off for a moment, Cross didnât comment. Only a bright smirk as their weapons clashed. Their swords advancing and guarding, empty fades blending with their lunges, a quick pivot as your opponent's sword narrowly misses.
At the forefront, he didnât want to think at all. Knew not to. Despite the voices, the trauma of war was stronger. You need to focus on your opponent, not your paranoia. Hesitation means death.
In his off time, he wandered the castle, listening to the echoes of his footsteps when the voices wouldnât shut up. Sometimes it led him to others.
Some days he would be running around with Killer helping him wrangle the new batch of kittens. Killerâs laughter and playful taunts barely enough to keep back the cries to just kill. Just hurt others. That was all he was good for. He could easily kill any of them with his bare useless claws. Killerâs soul was right there just waiting for him to crush it.
Other days he would stumble upon Dustâs little lab, although heâd have to purposefully head far up to do so. A tower sectioned off much like Nightmareâs little safe space. The windows were always open and airing out whatever smell the most recent experiment gave off. At times he wanted to question why Dust even used some of the ingredients he did, but he couldnât deny the qualities they had. So he just sat at the windowsill, watching as the clouds drifted by and counting down the hours as he watched the sun rise and fall.
Although, even with Dustâs constant mutterings and talking through the science behind the madness the voices found him there too. How trivial it would be to mix the ingredients, to switch them around on Dust. How could he be blamed for an obvious freak accident? Even if he was to blame for the freak Cobalt.
Once that name crossed his mind again, he searched for a new place to be. Anywhere that wouldnât make him think about that.
After many hours of wandering, he made his way outside in the sunset light. The buzz of a summer night approaching and a gentle breeze coming through. He watched as Dream nearby shivered, even as it felt warm to him. The perks of being a walking dead man.
Why was he even trying then? Couldnât Death just take his soul and he just be done with everything?
He found himself by Dreamâs side soon enough, laying in the grass as Dream worked on the garden he had begun. Luscious plants growing large with careful intent and care. He followed suit as Dream moved through the rows and planters, and when the guardian worked in the large greenhouse that Nightmare had happily suppliedâmuch to Dreamâs disdain, he didnât need something this bigâhe found himself tucked away in the corner.
Despite everything, this stupid little corner in the abomination of metal and plastic felt near perfect. Yet he still couldnât place what was wrong.
When nighttime fell, Dream would go inside, and eventually, one of his partners would pull him in as well. Nightmare would help him get ready for bedâeven if he refused to sleepâa quick shower or a soothing bath after a long day then a comfortable change of clothes and they would all get in bed. Despite staying over so much and practically calling the place home, Dream and Ink had yet to claim one of the many open rooms. They switched between Nightmareâs room, the library with Error, and the room Death had come to call his.
Although, on the days when the voices were particularly awful, and no matter what he did he couldnât get out of his own head, they all came to him. One by one each of them came in through the library doors, gave Error a kiss goodnightâor a shy nuzzle as Dream didâand settled in. As Error spent the night typing away to Sydney and working the best he could despite the voices screams, he could just barely make out the calm serene breathing of his partners.
Those Nights his soul felt full. Those nights it was much easier to ignore the voices. Those nights were one of the few he actually fell asleep.
Whenever by some mistake he did fall asleep, the voices and trauma continued to attack him, but Dream and Nightmare would always come to his rescue. Nightmare would assure him it was just a night terrorâthat it wasnât real and that it was long in the past or completely fabricatedâand then Dream would flank him with love and attention, easing him to a dreamless sleep.
But as the days continued on, his body hurt more and more, soon hardly being able to stand the texture of his own clothes. Hating every second they itched and scratched against him even as they were soft in his hands. His bones felt like they were always burning, and it wasnât long until he couldnât stand to have anyone touch him at all. Even the kisses he loved so much only hurt.
He felt so apart from his lovers, unable to hold them at all. Just them just being somewhat close was too much, even the sound of them existing nearby hurt too much while his soul started to hurt every moment he was alone. There was no pleasing a mistake like him was there?
The voices seemed to love jumping into this, assuring him they were there. They could help. They were always there, werenât they? They came back in droves, and he hardly noticed when it had turned sour.
One moment things were fine, the next he snapped for things to be quiet. And all the talking stopped. Inkâs shocked face in front of him.
His lovers, despite everything, stayed with him that night. Sleeping in a distant part of the library when he started to hate the sounds of their souls.
The sounds of the castle began to hurt and he hated every moment it wasnât dead silent. The only thing he came to stand was the sounds of outside. It wasnât the anti-voids peacefulness. Not by a long shot, no, but it was better than having to stand another minute of footsteps or the constant buzz of the lights, the pain in his skull from even the darkest of rooms.
That fucking trashy terrible excuse of a spot in the corner of the greenhouse turned into his safe spot. Morning to night he was there. Each meal Horror would inch out and carefully set the food nearby and then return for the dish a little while later. Sometimes the plate would be empty, sometimes he couldnât stand to touch it. The scratching of the fork or the little grains of seasoning getting on or between his bones was just not worth it.Â
He was just leeching off of them anyway. Hurting them more and more. As long as he was in the AU it was fine, wasnât it? If he was in the AU, if they knew he hadnât left, that could keep them all happy?
For now, the sounds of nature soothed instead of irritated, the noise of the day tolerable and the calm of night preferred, even if he didnât get to bask in it for long.
Dream worked some distance away, and it was quiet. Not silent, but quiet. Each moment was another moment of hate, wishing, and wanting, followed by more hate.
He hated the sound, wished he could go back to the antivoid, wanting to just leave, but he hated even the thought of leaving everyone. He hated what heâd become, a mess of a person just hurting everyone around him, if only he could go back, just go back to before, but then he wouldnât have Dream and Ink with him. He wouldnât have Reaper so close and Nightmare even closer. But all heâs done is hurt them. Heâs lost his hearing, not his sight.
He doesnât miss the anxious glances his lovers share when things get too much again. When he canât stand any noise. Doesnât miss the bubbling tears that appear when he has to stop Ink mid-sentence. Doesnât miss the sad expression Dream tries to hide when Error has to walk away mid-conversation. Doesnât miss the way Reaper falters when he has to avoid even the slightest graze from his wings. Doesnât miss Nightmareâs emotions draining by the day, that old stoic expression returningâjust like the first time they fell apart and the second.
It hurts so much, he wants to hear Inkâs rants, but any noise at all is grating his skull like cheese, and his soul hurts every time he dares open his mouth to explain. He doesnât deserve the privilege of being able to explain himself. He wants to be close to Dream, to be able to follow through on their little deal, to make Dream happy and talk with him, but his soul is too strong, the intent too much and too overwhelmingâand thatâs without thinking about the noise and textures of everything else. He wants to cuddle with Reaper and just hide away in those wings while Death just whispers sweet nothings and promises of making things better, but he canât. He canât at all and it hurts. And He doesnât even know where to start with Nightmare.
He barely registers the grass crunching outside as the voices quiet down, and faintly, he can feel his eye sockets hurting and skull burning again. How many times was that today?
You really canât keep count?
Thatâs fucking pathetic.
You expect anything more?
I expect him to just die and get this all over with, just another waste of time.
âErrorâŚ?â Nightmareâ voice whispered, pleasantly quiet, âMay I sit near you?â
He shrugged his shoulders, even as the friction of his hoodie moving itched and scratched against him. âAre you at your limit for the day?â Nightmare continued to whisper, voice even and emotionless. Error couldnât tell if the other was hurt or not or if he was sad that he couldnât sit near.
Youâre good at that, arenât you?
Oh, heâs the best at being a disappointment.
#1 Abomination as always Error.
The grass crunched annoyingly, and he could feel Nightmareâs souls settling nearby, just outside the greenhouse if he was right. The intent felt dizzying. Too much and too little. Far too much love, but at the same time, it never feels like enough. But if itâs too much love, then what isnât enough?
Obviously, youâre not enough.
You really couldnât put that together?
A disappointment as always.
â...Error?â He could barely manage a small hum of a questioning tone, the bare second-long vibration already skirting on too much, itching his skull. For the sake of less friction, he tensed and waited for the feeling to pass.Â
Nightmare didnât continue until his body relaxed. â...Iâve heard youâve been avoiding Chronic?â
He couldnât help the chuckle that escaped, a twisted smile forming on his skull, âWhat?â
âDidnâ even know they were âere.â He choked out as his soul squeezed, a pain he was unfamiliar with shaking him to his core. His cheeks burned more.
âTheyâve been here for some time, approached all of us during your last memory recovery and I allowed them to stay. It seems that the gang has grown fond of the odd creature.â
Why was Nightmare even bothering to tell him all this? Not like he cared what Chronic did. Bastard did whatever they wanted and had Core to help them get away with it. His sockets stung more, as a stray thought stuck out a sore thumb. He didnât care, even after all Chronic had done to help. He wants to care, but he canât muster the energy to. Not when all he does is hurt the people he cares about.
âError, I can feel your emotions churning, whatâs on your mind?â How could he explain anything to Nightmare? Heâd probably just break down before he got a single sound out. â... I wonât be mad if you canât Error.â
Opening his eyes hurts and burns, the sunlight shining through and bouncing around the greenhouse, but he keeps them open. He turns his head from the corner where it was snug and safe, and he can barely see the black of Nightmareâs skull and legs where he sits outside the doorway.
â...howâd I make you happy?â The words come out slurred and meek, and it feels like a death grip on his soul as the air hangs with quiet. Not silence. Never silent. But the lack of any response when Nightmare is always so fast to reply leaves anxiety in its wake.
As his throat burns and his body aches, he forces out more, his cheeks burning and vision blurring. âI donât know what you want me to beâŚâ and he barely can hold back the hiccup of a sob, the voices simply background noise as he listens for Nightmareâs response.
ââŚI donât want you to be anything.â
âThen how do I make you happy?â His voice strains at speaking but each word is more confident, the less he thinks about it and the less he can hear the voicesâbut it just makes the outside world so much more thundering. The sounds of Dream moving about in the distance too much, the wind too loud, the rustle of dirt below where he sits as he barely moves infuriating.Â
ââŚYou make me happy by being here.â No matter what, he was just going to hurt Nightmare.
ââŚThereâs no other way to make you happy?â His eyes finally drifted up to Nightmareâs. The barest bit of his skull peeking into the greenhouse. There was a glint in Nightâs eye that he couldnât place, but whatever emotion that was betrayed was quickly snuffed, the stoic expression returning.
The quiet left in the question's aftermath is deafening. That lovely marbled eye is calculating, and itâs one of the few he can stand to look at. While it rakes over him, it feels comforting. It feels like the hold of the lover. It is the hold of his lover. The only hold he can bare right now.
Finally, after a long silence, Nightmare sighs.
âIâll admit. Iâm not sure what to say for once. You being here makes me happy, yes⌠of course.â Nightmare chuckles sadly, âBut I also like you being happy. Iâm happy when youâre happy... when everyone is happy⌠I hold the same conundrum you do. I want to help youâbut you donât need help. Never have, never will.â
Nightmare sighed once more, skull drifting down as he broke eye contact, barely looking over his shoulder, over in the direction of Dream. âIâm not sure what exactly is going on in the wonderful skull of yours,â the intent made his skull swim, âbut, I think youâre⌠not seeing whatâs actually happening. Drawing conclusions if you will. It makes usâand I mean all of usâhappy to be near youâŚâ
Nightmare turned back, barely meeting his eyes, âWe understand that everything is a lot right now. That everything is a struggle. You donât have to do anything at all. It hurts sometimes, yes. But that is a hurt of privilege. Picture it as you starving⌠and we are hurt that we donât get a share of your food. Yes, it hurts. But only a littleâand it is highly nonsensical and momentary hurt, we can live without a full conversation or being near you.â
â...âM sorry?â Nightmare huffs out a surprised laugh, near gallow in tone.
âError, Ru, my love. There is nothing to be sorry for at all. We can wait or if you want, try and help it so you are not âstarvingâ anymore. We can go at whatever pace helps you.â
He doesnât have the heart to tell him why it hurts so much, and he can see the flash in Nightmareâs eye as the thoughts fly and crash in his skull. The thoughts of Cobalt, of all the pretending, of both lives, of past lives, of the deaths heâs caused. All of it weighs, and it crushes.
âError.â For a moment, his vision barely clears, his cheeks stinging and burning once more. Nightmareâs eye is trained on him, itâs soft, and itâs perfectly purple. âNo matter what has caused this, whatever memory has triggered this, no matter what youâve done, we will all still be here for you.â
â...Even if I did something horrible?â Nightmare chuckles softly, a kind gentle, and genuine smile gracing his corrupted features, and he can see the slight waver in the smile avoiding the chip in his cheek.
âLove, you could destroy the entire multiverse⌠even a megaverse if it exists out there⌠and I would follow your every step.â
The sudden power and control he feels from that statement alone is intoxicating, but it's the exact same reason he needs to leave. He canât pull them down this path with him. They donât deserve that.
â...Iâm always here.â
Error sucks in an unneeded breath before sighing, his voice choking and breath stuttering as more tears roll down.
ââŚI-I kn- knowâŚâ
