Ryan, Sara and TGC all had very interesting things to say about Aegon's sad background story but none of these wonderful concepts and depths are sufficiently, if at all, shown on screen, making Aegon one of the least comprehensible characters in s1 going into s2.
Living in baby Baelon's shadow. Robbed of his birthright as a male heir. Indifferent to his family because he's resigned to the idea he's unloved, if loveable at all.
Why, again, did Aegon not have a deep scene with Viserys? It would've done wonders for his characterisation, opposed to what we got.
Only when Ser Criston convinced him that the princess must surely execute him and his brothers should she don the crown did Aegon waver. It was this, and only this, that persuaded Aegon to accept the Crown.
Aegon's protectiveness for his family is one of his few good qualities.

Sort off. I have trust issues.
When people accuse the writers of empathizing with Aegon in season 2. No, they are not!
I think they had no choice but to write him, not empathetically, but wholesomely. That means like a 3D character (which he was NOT in s1, since we barely saw all of him save for his vices),which includes his relationship with his children, his siblings, his parents and the people of KL (a complex tapestry on its own with how ppl view him from different povs, e.g Dyanna vs the stereotypical male westerosi drunks at the tavern who just want a party and a free drink).
I think the biggest problem with Aegon comes from the fact that the writers refused to cover him as a main player, which he is, in the first season. He is after all the second claimant, which means his life coverage would be rivalling Rhaenyra's and therefore demanded scenes that explain how Viserys neglect, Alicent's abuse, his isolation from his siblings, his friendship with ppl that arent's his family, his obsession with seeking validation vs his inability to not be a spoiled, entitled prince with zero regard for the lowly....shaped him.
Long rant, but in short there was a problem of perspective. He was barely a character in s1, then got to be one in s2 because his fucking kid was killed and he had to declare war. And the writers treating him as an actual character, like they did Daemon, Rhaenyra, Alicent and Aemond...can easily be confused with empathizing with him. Which it just isn't the case. He is still very much the villain of the story to these writers in a show about several morally grey characters.

Aegon drinking his anxiety away the two times he was burdened with the grand call of duty: betrothal to Helaena and becoming king.
I expect these struggles will be highlighted in s2 since his wife, children and claim will be greatly threatened and he must now fight for them and their survival. Will he heed the call?
When you're neither Dad's favorite pitied child nor the dead one he really wanted, what happens? You live in a loveless limbo.
How can such a child know how to love when all his life he's been wandering about in the cold?
