Time Traveling Me
It was a brightly cosy afternoon as I opened my eyes and tried to recognize this very familiar scenery. Everything remained the same as the last time I was there, only it gave somewhat a more sepia sense. I walked along the corridor through the building and gazed away at the park, which looked more like a jungle, to the same old grand playground.
I suddenly realized I got thrown back to my elementary school, where I simply called home back then.
The atmosphere made me feel so calm and spontaneously pushed me to go up and keep on exploring. The light noises gradually emerged from what were supposed to be classrooms as I stepped up the stairs. However, I did not feel the need to find out what it was all about so I merely kept going up.
I found myself standing in front of the big atrium, which was also used as a gym for PE class. Honestly, I did not take time to notice whether there was a crowd. I only heard the light noises every once in a while. I kept walking through the corridor that wrapped around the atrium and watched it from the outside.
As I was distracted by a group of kids in front of me, I faced them absentmindedly. They were a mix of boys and girls, chubby and skinny. Each one of them silently stared at me with blank faces, emotionless. I started to notice the chubby one looked so familiar to me. I just could not make up my mind who she was at that time. We were about to walk pass one another when my eyes met the skinny one’s. I kept walking pass them, but then something urged me to turned around and took a clear look at the skinny girl.
Surprisingly, I found her alone without her crew and that she was also looking back at me, staring blankly directly into my eyes.
I suddenly turned back without a second thought and ran away from her at my full speed.
What was she trying to give me the message? I could not know nor guess from that look of her. In spite of that, I did not bother to stay longer and find out. Because of what I just saw, I could not bear facing that even for a second.
She was me, my younger self.
