The BMC ADO70 Calypso, a project from the late 1960s, aimed to replace the MG Midget, especially in the US market where MG was a significant revenue source for BMC. Designed by Paul Hughes and Rob Owen at the Amalgamated Design Office, the prototype was built by Carrozzeria Michelotti in Italy. However, after BLMC was created, the new board cancelled the project in 1970 due to concerns about the front-drive Mini drivetrain’s appeal in the US.
