Hi, hi! It’s been a while and I’m sorry cause after that birthday art, I really wanted to write an essay about Izuku for his special day (which was 16 days ago on the day of this posting) but work got super busy and I got too overwhelmed to come back here. So here’s a bit of a late tribute but sorta a bit personal take on our precious cinnamon roll.

All of us have various reasons to love this king. And to be honest, for me, it’s really easy to fall in love with a character. But I have to say, Midoriya Izuku is just different.

There are a lot of characters out there who have a sob story, a dark past, a stubborn heart, or well, a good mix of cuteness and badassery. But how come Izuku remains special?

For me, I wanna think that Hori’s creation of Izuku is a bit close to reality even if it’s a fictional and fantasy story of a superpowered society.

Izuku didn’t get his parents killed by villains. He isn’t an orphan (even if we don’t have much info about Hisashi, everything else about his father will remain a theory right now). He isn’t a super rich kid who’s spoiled and needs to learn a lesson. He isn’t a brat who doesn’t understand respect and has to be pulled down to the ground. He isn’t an immortal who’s meant to be left alone by all the people he’d love one day.

Thing is, Izuku just has one dream and he’s dreaming of the impossible. It’s something slapped to his face as early as 4 years old, an age where most of us still believe being carried by our parents is synonymous to being able to fly.

That in itself translates so much to reality already. Maybe, at one point, we all dreamed of something impossible. And just the act of dreaming, trying our best, even if we know that it’s not happening (or maybe a part of us did believe it would), we just want to get lost in the moment of dreaming. Then somehow, we don’t get the support that we need. I’m not speaking for everyone because there are people who have the best support systems in the world (and I’m grateful to have received that as well), but there are days that we want to aim for things and we don’t get everyone’s nods.

And Izuku lived that life for how many years. He’s Quirkless but he continued to be fueled by his admiration anyway. It’s not that he “didn’t care” by what people told him. You can see how emotional he is whenever he was mocked for just dreaming. That was enough to touch me already. He isn’t someone who pretended to be tough just because he wanted to be tough. He was dreaming but his feet were on the ground.

He continues to be amazing as he moves forward. Without big spoilers, the current manga arc is still about the students not landing on their 2nd year. But in that span of time, he has grown so much and a lot of things have already happened. But he still isn’t the most powerful. Time has been passing so slow in their universe and a lot of people get impatient by that and by his progress, but don’t you think it’s wonderful to see and feel the journey of someone who started at the bottom? And it happens slowly in the physical aspect as well. He got muscular after the training with All Might but you can compare his built back then to now and you can see how more training has been developing his physique. Even his costume! We get to see upgrades here and there.

It’s the small bits that makes Izuku a really lovable character. You really get to walk with him in his journey to be the “greatest hero.” And he doesn’t always win. He’s had so many failures even if he’s the MC. He has so many regrets. And he keeps on getting tougher.

The best thing? His growth is affecting the people around him. Not only his childhood friend, his classmates, but even his teachers and the villains.

Remember, it all started with a Quirkless boy dreaming and being true to himself.

And maybe, a lot of us want that too. To be able to inspire people around us by just continuing to be ourselves.

Izuku may be a fictional character but he has influenced me as a person “in the real world.”
