Was it on a sunny beach or in a long drunken conversation in the public baths or the walled-in garden yard? Poems point to a particular moment, not a gathering of them. I’d like to say there was a moment it hit me, a moment we smiled and there was such frisson, but I was obsessed with being coy and pretending I wasn’t falling for him. It built up over time, a gathering of strands that I braided into a cord, and then I required courage to throw it out to him. I usually say the first moment was when he made me laugh - that was the moment I knew I liked him, and that was significant because I had been feeling like truly, I didn’t like anyone lately, friend or potential lover. I realized that I wanted to enjoy myself, and that is a powerful thing. I have been enjoying myself since then!
