ADHD and anxiety. It’s almost impossible to not eventually develop anxiety when you spend a good chunk of your life with undiagnosed ADHD. Being restless and unable to relax are literally part of the diagnostic criteria for anxiety. Unlike anxiety, there’s no trigger for those sensations in ADHD. We are like that when we are alone or in a crowd, with strangers or with loved ones, when we are happy or when we are sad. All the time. Not knowing that ADHD can be undiagnosed has lead many, including myself to be misdiagnosed and receive treatments that not only don’t work, but could make things worse for people with ADHD. Studies have proven CBT to be less effective for people with ADHD. Before I knew I had it, I would gaslight myself for failing to get better with it. I’d accuse myself of not trying hard enough, when it was really just because I did not have the ability to regulate my executive functions; which is essential for achieving success with CBT.
