Adelaide separates her life into the Before, and the After.
The Before was ideal, picturesque. Adelaide grew up in a house in the countryside, where the summers were long, and the nights were filled with music and laughter. She didn't have a care in the world, and frankly, school was no different. Things like blood, that didn't matter to Adelaide. She credits her mother for this egalitarian world view. Adelaide’s mother is her hero, her role model, and she aspires to be just like her.
And when the war hits, for the longest time, Adelaide doesn’t pick sides. She trains as a potioneer, like her mother before her, and she is happy.
It is an overcast day when Adelaide and her mother go on an impromptu shopping trip. She’s forgotten to buy a gift, and Adelaide may be a lot of things, but organised is not one of them. She hears a commotion, but before she can turn around, everything turns to black.
After, she wakes up on a rubble covered street, bruised, bloody and broken. Her mother is not next to her anymore, she’ll never be anything ever again. And the week in St Mungo’s might heal her physical wounds, but they do nothing for the new war waging in her mind. The once outgoing girl barely leaving the house, flinching at loud noises, and crying herself to sleep.
At her fathers insistance, she enters therapy, and is promptly told she is suffering from PTSD. It is a collection of letters she doesn't initially understand, but the more she works with her therapist, the better she begins to feel.
After, applies for the healers program. The healers that day saved her life, she figures that the least she can do it repay that. It is for that same reason that she joins the Order. She had heard about them before, but she was too dedicated to staying uninvolved. She can't say that anymore. There's been a fire lit inside her. She knows how the war can tear your heart out, and she won't let that happen to anyone else, if she can help it.
Negative - anxious - withdrawn
