The Good Witches of Oz (3)
For a certain amount of time the idea that there were two Good Witches in Oz was lost, thanks to the overshadowing influence of the MGM adaptation. It however resurfaced with "The Wiz" which, as a more direct adaptation of the novel, kept the idea of having a Witch for the North and another for the South.
The Witch of the North is renamed Addapearle ("The Feelgood Girl") by The Wiz, and is given blue as her main color. (Or is it Addaperle? Addapearl? Nobody seems to agree on how to spell it) She retains the "excentric but benevolent grandma" vibes from Baum's Good Witch of the North, with her hopeful songs, joyful tunes, magic bag and strange patchwork-outfit (at least in her original incarnation by Clarice Taylor).
The Witch of the South is still Glinda, and is also still the most youthful and "glamorous" of the two Good Witches - though the red and white motif of Baum's Sorceress has been replaced with softer pinks and browns. The original costume for Dee Dee Brigewaters also has a strong "earthly" motif, with flowers appearing on the dress - as opposed to Addapearl's more "astral" motif with stars and moons over her veil.
Second most famous version of The Wiz after the original: the movie adaptation. Which is notorious for changing quite a lot of things... The Good Witch of the North, while still being a blue-themed excentric granny, is now "Miss One", a character mixing a "bag lady" from the streets of New-York with an extravagant mathematician. The motif of the Good Witch of the North using a magic slate to tell Dorothy were to go was here expanded into the concept of a witch obsessed with (and literaly made of) numbers.
Glinda is still here, but she is given the same blue color and astral motif as Addapearl/Miss One, unifying the two Good Witches visually. Glinda also has here a greater focus on a motherly aspect (she is surrounded by floating baby-stars) - which coupled with her "astral powerful sorceress" character almost makes her a fantasy version of the Holy Mary. You will also note the presence of snowflakes in her design - to highlight how in this version she causes the snowstorm that takes Dorothy to Oz.
Making the two Good Witches blue-themed is to better opposes them to the red-colored Wicked Witch. (There's also something to be said about how the Wiz-movie Good Witches represent abstract things, like numbers or the stars, while the Wicked Witch is covered in junk and jewelry, literaly weighed down by an outfit of materialism...)
In the Wiz Live we find a much younger and energetic Addapearl, with her hair shaped in the form of a traditional witch hat. The "patchwork cloak" is still here, though smaller and more modern-looking (as well as less... "loony" let's say - no globe randomly stitched anywhere).
While here Glinda is the oldest of the two Good Witches, a more mature woman with a new color motif... gold, with her swirly fiber-optic dress looking like clouds of gold dust.
A golden motif that was kept for the most recent 2024 iteration of the musical, where the character of Glinda has very sparkly and shining, "angular" yellow dresses (opposed to the more orange and reddish, fiery yellow of the Witch of the West)
And, ironically the 2024 incarnation of Addapearl inherits the motifs that shaped the original costume of The Wiz's Glinda - soft colors, presence of pink, strong floral motif...
