Inclusion Beyond the Classroom
Just a short blog post from us at CAPED Specialists about the importance of inclusion beyond the classroom.
A friend forwarded me an online article the other day and while it made my heart hurt, I realized that this is exactly why the work we do at CAPED Specialists is even more important than just kids participating in physical fitness and recreation.
Kids with special needs might have motor or cognitive delays, but that doesn't mean that they don't have feelings, wants and needs similar to other kids in their age group. A mother in the article shares this sentiment with the parent who did not invite her son with Down Syndrome to a birthday party in which all other classmates were invited. Can you imagine the heartbreak her child must have felt being the only one left out? It's hard enough to be the kid who is different than everyone else, but then to be singled out because of that difference is so unjust.
As a society we need to do better. As parents and influencers of our "typical" children, we need to teach acceptance regardless of abilities. If we can't do that as adults, how can we expect our youth to do anything different? There are many milestones that those with a disabilities will never attain, like getting a driver's license, getting married or owning a home. So while we can, we need to create memorable life experiences like being invited to birthday parties or attending the prom. Sometimes the smallest gestures can the biggest difference.
After reading this article, I am beyond motivated to find ways to be better and do better for the people of my community. I am making it my personal goal to ensure that CAPED Specialists is welcoming to everyone of all ages and abilities. It's our goal to offer a fully inclusive environment to all kids. We will strive to educate our communities on the importance of equal chances regardless of physical or cognitive limitations. We hope that through our commitment to improving the lives of kids with special needs, that we can inspire you to do the same.
Inclusion for all!
