Jarod pulls the cigarette from his lips and exhales the smoke.  “Just taxi driving,” he says, “getting people from one place to another.  It pays decently, especially considering you get to keep whatever tips you make and two-thirds of all fares.”  Unfortunately, he cannot let his drivers keep their entire fares because a business like his costs money to run.

Rat is looking over one of Jarod’s dinosaur magazines, which he, of course, encourages—that is why they are there.  He loves to see people pick them up and then engage them in conversation about the contents.  Many of them are fairly old; new dinosaur magazines do not get published often because there are not many new things going on in the world of paleontology these days.  Every once in a while, scientists discover a new dinosaur, but there is rarely enough material to fill up an entire magazine.

In my first two data posts for 2025, I looked at the strong year that US equities had in 2024, but a very good year for the overall market does not always translate into equivalent returns across segments of the market. In this post, I will remain focused on US equities, but I will break them into groupings, looking for differences. I first classify US stocks by sector, to see return variations…

“I did see that,” Jarod says. It’s a little hard to miss that kind of commotion—he is sure everyone in the immediate area is currently looking at Rat and the woman.  The woman gives him an irate look over her shoulder as if she is considering coming back for round two, but luckily for him, she decides to keep walking.

Jarod digs a pack of cigarettes out of his jacket pocket to join Rat in smoking.  The guy didn’t offer him one, and he can’t blame him for that—this shit gets more expensive every day, so he wasn’t going to ask, either.

“Goddamn city planners,” Jarod says, shaking his head.  “I think all the plans are drafted without having feet on the ground, being out here, looking at stuff.  And, of course, it’s gonna take no less than five years to get anything around here fixed.”  He has never been one for politics, and he does not get nearly as invested in who is President of the country as other people do.  However, that does not mean he is entirely without his grievances, especially when it comes to things like road maintenance.
