A short story - The Acetus Empire's first contact with Madworld
Agent Renos Altir has been given a task. A very special task - very few people in the Empire have ever received such task. It was the start of something truly wonderful - the control of the Acetus Empire of every existence in Sorazys, that will cause peace and prosperity everywhere, just as how wonderful it was to live in the Empire. And Renos has been chosen as the first pioneer for one of the first existences they'll be checking. His task was simple - he was to enter an unknown existence, and gather information of it. He needed to see if the existence was filled with happiness or despair (and as such, needed the Empire's embrace to help it), and if it was too dangerous for the Empire to interact with. There were a few options for how this could go out - the Empire could decide to conquer the existence, they could take control of it but let the people mostly govern themselves, they could offer an alliance, or, in the worst case scenerio, they could decide not to intervene, if the existence was too dangerous. But that last one wasn't likely. Every existence the Empire has entered so far had very basic technology - the most advanced thing they've seen was basic pistols. And the Empire had guns and bombs. Those were purely for defending against the monsters of the mountains, but Renos has been given permission to use them for self-defense, should any local human attack him. Of course, he wouldn't kill them - that would be immoral. He would simply incapacitate them for the time being, with the peace-making tools he's been given.
It was time. He will now enter the portal to the new existence. He would return when he saw fit, and would most likely bring a team of pioneers with him, that will build a larger, permanent portal on the other side. He got his things, and eventually, when the time has come, entered the portal.
The process of moving through such portal was quite the experience. He was thrown into the Inter-Existional Space, and flew for a few moments before the portal for the other side opened before him.
Very green grass. Bright sky, with a few clouds, but not many. He could see some houses not far away. They were pretty advanced. Looked advanced enough to be considered modern, actually. Then, he heard it. A fight. Quite close to him, actually. It was a few meters behind him.
A (very) short woman with a gun-like weapon in her hand was fighting... "What the third is that abomination???" Renos cursed aloud. It was a floating orb of chairs, spinning around each other, with tentacles made of wood coming out of it.
"Why, why whyyyyyy," The woman muttered. "Every 2 or 3 weeks, another set of chairs becomes some mutant. Why the chairs?" The woman was firing bullets made of flames onto the... chair thing. "Why always the chairs? I had to make a chair-printing machine." She noticed Renos. "Oh, hello there!" She took a look at him. "You're quite tall, aren't you?" Renos has always thought of himself as being average-height, and others have always said the same. Could people of this place just be very short?
"Too tall, actually." She said, while pressing a button on her weapon that shot an explosion of flames at the chair thing. "Are you a human? I'm pretty sure I heard someone talking about how they met a monster imitating a human."
Renos looked at her weapon. "I'm a human. I'm just... from a very far away place." She looked at him. "There's no place on the human continent where your height is normal. I'm pretty sure I would've heard of such place." She tightened her grip at her weapon.
"Alright, alright. I'm from a different existence." He said. "Oh, like one of those lore searcher people?" She asked, now relaxed. "What? Lore searchers?" He said. He thought they were a mere urban legend. He'd have to check that. "No, I am not such... Lore searcher. I am an agent from the Acetus Empire, sent here to gather information about this existence." He looked at that chair thing. She was now blasting it with a blowtorch. "What... What is that thing?"
"Oh, my chairs mutated again. It's really annoying. It's been happening so often I made a chair-printing machine." She said, somewhat annoyed. "Is... Is chairs turning into THAT a normal thing here?" He asked, worried. "I mean, the chair thing happens more often for me. But I think there's a guy on the other side of town, which experiences his computers turning into an intelligent evil being quite often. He does have a good cyber security, though, so it's not that bad." She scratched her chin. "Oh, and my friend's house randomly turned sentient the other day, and grew hands. It write poetry. It's pretty decent, I'd say."
Renos was bamboozled. "Wait... So..." He shook his head. "So you're telling me random stuff becomes sentient in here? All of the time?"
"Well, not necessarily sentient," She said. "I think a patch of trees randomly turned a pinkish purple the other day. Quite the nice color, I must say."
"And stuff... Just randomly happens in here? All of the time?" He asked, exasperated. "Yeah." She said. "How do you live like this???" He asked. "Many don't." She said. "But we do train a lot at fighting."
"I... I think I'll go now." He said. "Didn't you say you were the agent of some Empire?" She asked. "Don't you have anything more you need to do in here?"
"N-no..." He said. "I think I've gathered enough info about this place." This place was definitely too dangerous for the Empire.
"Well, consider visiting this place from time to time!" She told him. "We call it Madworld, by the way. Goodbye!" And then he stepped into the portal again.
