#acaplaya analysis

This video has a couple things in common with Geoff's Man Of Constant Sorrow video (besides the obvious outdoors setting): First of all, the initial shot of the camera moving forward, and panning from the road up to Geoff, shoes-to-head, is similar to a shot in MOCS. And secondly, both had colour adjustments done to the footage! (Well, that's true for a lot of them, because that's just part of filmmaking, but there are other reasons here!) The clone shots for Man Of Constant Sorrow were done in fading daylight, so there was extra post-production editing work to make the footage look brighter. This video, meanwhile, was filmed in pretty cold temperatures (40F ~ 4C), so the colouration and brightness were adjusted to make it look warmer than it actually was!

(Oh and bonus: This was actually filmed on a road which actually leads to Big Oaks Ranch, which was used for the clone shots in MOCS, as well as a couple of VoicePlay videos, and also Take Me Home Country Roads! The ranch was way further down than where Geoff was for this one, though)

We got the white tank top (in cold weather, thank you for your sacrifice good sir 🫡), the classic red belt, and the leather wristband/wrist-strap thing! Classic Geoff look! (Other than the fact that I can't see the chain of the silver necklace he usually wears, which I'm just realizing stays absent for the whole video! Crazy! (Edit: One of the Patrons suggested it was perhaps deliberate to aid in the "poor" look he's going for at the start of the video. Still couldn't part with his smartwatch, though! 😅))

And now here's a hat that appeared out of nowhere! (Geoff and Kathy tried doing a shot where Geoff was walking and Kathy would stand out of frame and hold it for Geoff to grab, but it didn't work out, so they just went with a basic cut).

Also I have no idea what's in that bag that he carries, but I'm guessing that it wasn't empty, because it would look flatter and would honestly be harder to carry in a way that looked "genuine". It'd be kinda funny if he was carrying the extra clothes that he dons later in the video, but it would also kinda make logical sense?

Furthermore, the fact that Geoff moves his arm like this/adjusts the way he's carrying the bag indicates that it has in fact got some weight to it (so maybe more than clothes, then)

Oh btw we didn't actually get any Sleeveless Geoff videos on Geoff's channel last year, and one one from VoicePlay from We All Lift Together! So welcome back, arm muscles!

(Also going back to my "It Was In Fact Quite Cold" point from earlier, I can definitely relate as a Queenslander! Our winters often look like this as well! (From one Sunshine State to another!). However, you're often usually better off being out in the sunshine than inside most houses (unless they're modern and/or have reverse cycle air-cons), because Aussie homes aren't built for cold temperatures! So if it's sunny and not windy, outside is the better place to be! (Though to be fair, in my city, it doesn't usually get down to single digit temps (Celsius) unless it's nighttime/very early mornings. And even then it doesn't always get as cold as Florida might! But I know some other cities, particularly more inland ones, get colder!)

My friend when I showed her this video yesterday: "Oh my god, he's wearing cream! It's not technically white! It's a colour! It counts!" (Yes, she knows about my (affectionate) teasing about Geoff's aversion to colours 😝)

(Actually, I told other Geoff Patrons about it, and it resulted in people making "Geoff colour bingo cards", with us basically tracking his clothing colours in videos for the rest of 2026 to see how many colour squares we can cross off!

Shoe change! (Didn't realize until now that the shoes are the first things to change! The things you notice when you go through videos with a fine-toothed comb!)

Oh and the belt changes as well! Now a dark brown with a golden buckle! I might not have noticed it if not for pointing out the red belt he started with, purely just because he's worn that belt before! (Hell, his starting outfit is basically just his Sixteen Tons outfit, except without the necklace)

He's a red golden retriever, and he's been Geoff and Kathy's dog (and Geoff's best buddy) since early 2024, around March or April or so. I've been hoping for Tommy to feature in a video practically ever since we first learned about him (he makes appearances in several BTS videos on Geoff's Patreon, at least), and I was positively delighted and over the moon when he showed up in this one! (Also Tommy's fur colour is very close to my hair colour (except my hair is just slightly darker), so that's fun!)

As for Geoff, hot damn he looks damn good here! (Also yet another peak brown outfit of his - he doesn't wear brown much, but when he does he kills it every time! Peak peak peak!). Like yee-haw and all that!

Oh yeah also Geoff's got a cool gold necklace in lieu of his usual silver one, and the gold pendant is definitely the only eye-catching thing in this image, the only thing I'm look at, nothing else, no idea what you're talking about, what?

In case you missed it in the description, the car is a 1967 Pontiac Catalina convertible! (It was rented out for the video, and showed up with two flat tires, so that was fun!)

I got a music-video intertwining bit to share here, not from me, but from one of the Patrons in the Discord! (Shoutout to Sweetcuttlefish/Ashley Evers):

...the bit during that last chorus/whatever you call it when he is repeating random words from the chorus, driving the car and he manages to drop enough words that it does actually sound like he's singing about being rich "Trailers for sale or rent. I'm a man of means, King of the Road",... Just the perfect touch for the moment where he's the deepest in the fantasy.

Shoutout to the pinky ring! (Some of the Patrons had Opinions about it, and about the kind of people who'd dress Like That and wear pinky rings (nothing but light teasing), but personally I just think it's neat!). Personally I prefer to only wear rings on my index fingers (plus I have slim fingers anyway), but I find it cool when other people wear rings on other fingers on their hand!

(Also I just realized he's missing his wedding ring here - keeping with the story scenario, I guess?)

Oh I just noticed the finger snap he does here right at the end of the "fantasy" sequence before it cuts back to "reality"! Cute and very smooth!

And to quote another Patron: "when he's back to his blingless tanktop ways, he still finds what matters most, a loyal buddy on the road." 💜

And a classic Iris Out to finish off the story/video!

(Though funnily enough, what Geoff didn't do was put his gramophone logo at the end like he usually does! Though I swear he still did it for the Early Access video and/or the BTS on Patreon! Did he forget or something?

Okay so it's not like it's close to being shot-for-shot or anything like that, but I'm still counting it!

There was probably no specific intent behind the inclusion of this raven statue, other than it just being part of the general vibe/aesthetic, but it reminded me of Geoff's narration of the poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, so like I'm saying this half-counts as a callback.

BUT ALSO, a raven is seen during multiple points of The Haunted Mansion ride! (shoutout to The Haunted Mansion Wiki for jogging my memory!). It's first seen in the conservatory, cawing at guests, then in the seance room, and the ballroom, then outside the attic balcony, and finally atop the crypt at the end of the attraction. So who knows, maybe the statue was a deliberate inclusion on Geoff's part for this video

The sheet music isn't actually for a specific piece of music, it's just purely decorative (and apparently it doesn't even fully make sense, especially not as piano music. There's a clip in the BTS of Geoff expressing his confusion about it, and Kathy said that it was apparently sold as something to be used for scrapbooking purposes and that sort of thing).

Geoff of course filmed this inside Pattycake Studios, using their Haunted Mansion set, like VoicePlay did for Hide And Seek/Ding Dong, and like Pattycake Productions themselves did for their Villains Haunted Mansion video (and possibly others, I can't remember for sure).

However, it's not Geoff's first time using this set, not exactly! In case the two large fake windows aren't enough of a giveaway/memory trigger for you, Geoff filmed his God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen video in this set in 2021! Except it wasn't Haunted Mansion themed at that point (not till shortly after the video was done), and was just known as "the Parlor". (Credit to the posts of @jules-has-notes for helping me keep my facts straight)

I'd like to say that there's a nod here to Geoff's Headless Horseman video (and hell, maybe you could argue as such on the audiovisual basis of the way these five are all singing in head voice), but on a purely visual standpoint, these are of course representations of the five singing busts found at The Haunted Mansion, as portrayed below:

The Haunted Mansion busts actually have names (or at least, there were names given to each of the characters whom they're modelled after): from left to right, we have Rolo Rumkin, Uncle Theodore (the lead singer, voiced by Thurl Ravenscroft), Cousin Algernon, Ned Nub, and Phineas P. Pock.

Geoff, however, credits his singing busts in the description as "Geff, Geoph, Elmer, Goeff and Jeoff" 😂 (note how they're all different names to our usual band of backup clones - Jeff, Goff, Jeoph, and Daryl!)

I was trying to find a good frame of Geoff, and I caught him winking!!

(Also I'm pretty sure that a couple of those candles on the right are leftovers from the Ring Of Fire video (especially as I literally just finished going through that one prior to this)).

So yeah, believe it or not, every single one of these busts has Geoff's face projected onto it (using a projector hidden on the set, meaning this isn't post-production!). But why do they all look so different and hardly like Geoff at all? It's not just the hair (or lack thereof)! Obviously, these five busts aren't identical copies of each other, and they're very much three-dimensional, meaning the proejctor isn't just projecting its footage onto a flat, smooth, surface. Each head has a different face shape, different cheekbones, different jawlines, different noses, etc.

Really it's kinda blending Geoff's face with a different face, in a way, and we don't have any other identifying features to go off of other than Geoff's eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth, which are all more or less distorted by the shape of the busts anyway, and they're also all lacking in colour, of course. So basically, there's a very good explanation for why the busts really don't look like Geoff hardly at all.

If I hit image limit on this one, I'm blaming it squarely on me potentially overdoing it with the pics of Geoff at the piano here 😂 (He looks so good!)

Also I was rewatching an old video of Disneyland Dapper Dans (honestly probably one of my very first introductions to acapella, thanks to the power of YouTube), doing a Halloween performance as "Cadaver Dans", and I realized that Geoff's outfit in this video is kinda similar to theirs, whether intentional or not. The dark grey coat, the white undershirt with the high-necked collar, and of course the dark red necktie thing. See below!

Omg its an Eli Eyebrow Raise(tm)! It's been a hot minute! (That's only gonna mean anything to you if you're familiar with most of my Voiceplay Visuals posts, particularly the earlier ones, but basically it's something I pointed out quite often, for funsies)

This ghost isn't actually "played" by anyone, per se - in the credits in the description, it says "Additional Phantom Animations by https://Atmosfx.com", but regardless, this ghost is a representation of The Bride/Constance Hatchaway, whom I talked about in my Voiceplay Visuals post for VP's Hide And Seek (Ding Dong!) video, where she was played by Lauren Paley. (And in Pattycake's newest video, she's played by Eden Espinosa (seriously if you haven't watched/listened to Heartbreaker yet, go do so, it's amazing!!!))

Seriously, somebody get this man wearing more Victorian-era clothing more often! 😄

(Also, any time you see a video with Geoff playing a piano inside Pattycake Studios, assume that the one used for the video was out-of-tune, because it usually is, and such was indeed the case here too!)

The ghosts flying around the room are a nod to one section of The Haunted Mansion ride (the Ballroom/Grand Hall scene, I believe), and VoicePlay's Hide And Seek (Ding Dong!) video has a part with a similar effect. (Or should I say, the same effect? Because these ghosts look very, very similar between these two pics!)

It's a couple of the Ghost Riders!

First of all, the paintings are replicas of those found in The Haunted Mansion's ballroom/grand hall, sometimes known as "The Duellists". Just like in this video, during the ride they emerge from their paintings and shoot at each other before disappearing again!

However, Geoff of course made it into a callback/reference to his Ghost Riders In The Sky video! (And he posted a quick update video to us Patrons in late September, in full makeup and costuming for "Jeoph", in front of a green screen, which obviously turned into a big example of "how to mislead your fans without technically lying" /lh)

(Oh and also Geoff forgot to take his smartwatch off, lol)

Hey look, Violayne made it onto Geoff's channel after all! 😁😝😉

Also fun fact: you obviously can't tell in the video, but Layne is actually holding the golden fiddle/violin that was used in VP's The Devil Went Down To Georgia video!

Just like with the portraits, this is another two-part reference!

Sticking with the grand hall/ballroom scene that this video largely references, Geoff and Kathy are alluding to the twelve ghostly ballroom dancers seen in the grand hall during the ride, who appears to be floating thanks to what's known as the "Pepper's Ghost" effect!

However, it's also of course a reference to the ending of Geoff's Monster Mash video! (As is the bit of Kathy screaming earlier in the video, I believe.) Us Patrons got a picture (full-coloured, black background) of Geoff and Kathy doing this part the day before we got early access to the video, and I immediately clocked it as both being a reference to the Monster Mash video, and not actually being from the Monster Mash video (i.e. new footage, not reused).

Geoff was actually wearing coloured contacts for this video, fun fact. Grey ones, I believe? It's hard to say how much of a difference they made, since there's not a lot of light directly shining onto his face and we don't get a lot of close-up shots of him, but I gotta appreciate the extra effort regardless!

Oh I love this shot - I'm low-key tempted to make it my laptop lock screen for the rest of the month, honestly 👀

And of course we end with having Moe Larry and Curly Eli, Layne, and Cesar as the three famous Hitchhiking Ghosts that are seen at the end of the Haunted Mansion ride!

As Geoff said at the end of his Early Access post for Patrons, "Shout out to all of my special guests... there are LOTS of happy haunts in this one, so keep a sharp eye out and of course, if you'd like to join us, there's always room for one more..."

Btw if you don't usually stick around for the Patron shoutouts, you should do so anyway, but especially listen till the very end of this video this time around! I was absolutely cackling at Geoff's nicknames 😂🤣

First of all, I like the "expanding circle" opening transition for the start of the video - it subtly alludes to how this is predominantly a storytelling song/video.

Second of all, hello J None! He is of course the "guest collaborator" for this cover, and it continues the trend of J None returning for almost every single one of VoicePlay's Halloween releases! (Other than Ding Dong/Hide And Seek in 2022, which featured Lauren Paley).

"Hang on guys, something's up!"

I honeestly really love the composition of this shot. I love how there's blue lighting over Eli, J, and Cesar, as our backing vocals trio (or the "American Country Greek Chorus, as I kind of described them in my musical thoughts/commentary post), and then there's gold lighting over Layne and Geoff, as our instrumentalist/protagnist and narrator, respectively. And then you have the grey-white space between the trees in the background (or, well, on the background, really), which is lined up almost perfectly with the tree stump in the midground where the five of them are!

Also as I was first watching this, I got some Classical Chaos vibes from the straw/hay on the ground, and the actual trees used as setpieces, but we'll touch on that some more in a bit. ;)

This partially-obcured shot is a nice touch - it's meant to be a POV shot, like you're looking through the eyes of someone/something spying on VoicePlay while hiding in some bushes. It helps to add a bit of extra suspense! The video even throws in some growls as well (which the audio track doesn't have) (if I had to guess, I'd say it's Geoff or Layne with a bit of extra audio processing, but I can't be sure - it could be a stock sound effect for all I know).

How cool are these star designs? They were created by Angie Woollard, a VoicePlay Patron who makes some incredible artwork using a spirograph - here's her Instagram if you wanna go show her some love! VoicePlay commissioned her to make some designs specifically for their video, and a couple of them even got used for some VoicePlay merch! (I used to have a spirograph myself when I was younger, but it was a basic kids version, and though I still did some cool art with it, none of it was anywhere near as layered and as detailed as what Angie makes!)

Presenting Matthew "Bucky" Buckner, playing The Devil for this video! Bucky is of course no stranger to VoicePlay - he was once briefly a proper member I believe? It might've been back when they were still 4:2:Five? Regardless, in more recent years he's showed up in a couple of Minis (the Candy Crush one, and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)), and was the titular Drunken Sailor in VoicePlay's video for it. He's also assisted Geoff behind the scenes for a couple of videos (helped with choreography for Monster Mash, and was a "consultant" for Unshaken, as somebody quite familiar with Red Dead Redemption II. He's even been in a Pattycake Productions video! (Played Prince Charming in Cinderswift).

Kudos as always (or almost always, anyway) to Rick Underwood for the phenomenal work with the makeup prosthetics! It's very awesome that he's still able to find time away from his work at Universal Studios to still help with VoicePlay/Geoff videos from time to time! The things he can do with an airbrush are honestly mind-blowing!

BOY LEMME TELL YOU WHAT

(Also I've only just noticed right now that The Devil also appears to have cloven hooves for feet).

"Who me?" (is what I'm assuming those two violin-string-like noises translated to, lol)

(Also this is at least the second video we've got where Layne is "fear-beatboxing", pfft)

Also also, I of course noticed the star necklace that Layne wears in the video, which has gotta be deliberate, since he's never worn it before and only wears necklaces in videos if its part of a specifically-chosen outfit. I'm guessing it's just meant to symbolise how Layne is on The Good Side, having a right-side-up star, as opposed to The Devil being on The Bad Side, with his upside-down star (i.e. pentagram).

"Johnny" (Layne, kinda) starts by saying "it might be a sin...", and The Devil responds with this hand-wavey gesture, because like, c'mon, this is The Devil you're talking to! There's really no need to apologise for any potential sins of yours in this conversation! (Shoutout to one of the VoicePlay Patrons for pointing this out yesterday in the Discord server)

Love a good fire effect in a video!

Violin rosin is indeed highly flammable, so I've heard. There's some interesting chemical reaction that happens with rosin, I think (or the powdered form, at least), but idk, I've never played any string instrument and I'm not a total chemistry expert. And I digress!

Me too, Geoff, me too

(Also I love how Geoff is kind of an "involved narrator", or whatever the proper term may be (if there is one at all). Like he's narrating the story, but he's also in the story at the same time! Gives me a bit of musical theatre vibes ngl (there's a couple specifically I'm thinking of, one very well known, and one that's more niche).

The callback to In The Hall Of The Mountain King! I talked about it in my musical thoughts/commentary, and I said I'd talk more about it in my Voiceplay Visuals post, and so here I am!

A great reason why it works so well is that anyone who's decently familiar with VoicePlay's Mountain King and Classical Chaos videos would've likely already have been getting those sort of vibes from this video! Not just in the background/set design (like I mentioned a bit further up in this post), but also in the appearance of The Devil Himself. The bright red skin, the large, clawed hands, the fur, the horns, the prosthetics on the ears, nose, and chin - all of it screams "Grundel" (well, to me, anyway - I haven't gotten around to watching any reaction videos for this yet).

While I'm here, the necklace that Cesar is wearing is the same one that he wore for the Party Of Your Lifetime video, and he also wore it in the For The Longest Time "biggie" video!

(Oh and if I had a dollar for every time the VoicePlay guys had makeup applied to their faces/hands/clothing to make them look dirtier, I'd have enough money to up my Patreon tier /lh )

"Bro you good?"

(Not even the narrator is safe from demonic possession! But hey, it gives us a pretty sick bassline!)

I haven't stopped to talk specifically about Geoff's appearance yet (shocker I know), but I haven't found a good-enough closeup frame yet! Regardless, he's got buttons unbuttoned, and the necklace chain is visible, so not much new here, but he did get a haircut recently! The hair is as great as ever of course <3

Bucky does not know how to play the violin (I don't think the gold violin was even properly functional (or at least the bow wasn't) during the filming, iirc from the BTS? Probably for the best, honestly. But hey, Bucky still seemed to have a lot of fun with his performance!

Some fans have suggested that instead of this being Violayne, it's actually 😝

Either way, this is the 4th time we've seen Layne playing the violin/fiddle in a VoicePlay video, so I'll absolutely be making a little photo compilation for it at some point! (Soon, hopefully).

If I had a nickel for every time Layne kicked something away and out-of-shot in a VoicePlay Halloween video, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's funny that it's happened twice (in two consecutive years, no less!) (Also lol at how shocked Geoff looks in that third screencap 😂)

If you were wondering how the violin managed to spin and turn so much while flying through the air, the answer is strings! Fishing wire or something like that; when The Devil holds up the golden fiddle, offering it to Johnny, you can see one of the thin translucent strings hanging down from the left side of it, down past The Devil's fingers.

Pfft, not even The Devil Himself is immune to the awesomeness of VoicePlay's music! (And he is Mad About It, though screencaps can't really do it justice)

"Take that!"

I love how The Devil mutters "stupid VoicePlay" as he walks off (also not in the MP3 audio track), which implies that he's heard of them before, or perhaps has even had dealings with them before?! (But also that kind of implies that this is a universe/timeline where they live in Georgia, not Florida, and that Layne is called Johnny. But anyway...)

And we finish the same way we started, but in reverse, with a circle closing to black on the screen towards the centre!

And that's The Devil Went Down To Georgia - VoicePlay style! I actually included 28 images all up, not 30, but with all my yapping, I think I still made a pretty thorough post!

TDWDTG doesn't beat Hunt The Sky for me in terms of favourite VoicePlay song/video for the year, but this absolutely still makes the top 3.

This was filmed at Oviedo Mall, in the old loading dock of an old abandoned Sears store!

The contrasting blue and orange lights give a cool effect, and now that I think of it, they low-key remind me of the Hellfire video.

Speaking of lights, the neon pink sign on the right of screen is fake - it was added in post-production!

See look, now the neon sign isn't there! But anyway, time for some clothing talk!

The overall vibe is more or less "mining workers with some vague steampunk-ness" (as far as the guys' outfits go, I mean), which is pretty easy for Geoff! He's basically just wearing the same stuff that he did for his cover of Sixteen Tons (which was also one of his outfits for Big Bad John), just with a couple extra accessories (which I'll touch on when I get better shots of them). Also I'm pretty sure this is the first time this year we've seen Geoff sleeveless, on either VoicePlay's channel or his!

(Actually fun fact: Jose, Cesar, and Layne are all also wearing tank tops underneath their jackets, not t-shirts!)

The harness thing that Jose has is very cool, and it goes well with his plaid flannel jacket! I also like the goggles that he and Eli both have (though they have different pairs).

Funnily enough, this is the same positioning order as Sleeping In The Cold Below: Geoff-Eli-[collab]-Cesar-Layne

No contact lenses this time (luckily for the guys), the eye glow effects were done in post! (And apparently it's likely some sort of Warframe lore thing, based on a comment I read).

I love how the soundscape and the video work hand-in-hand here to depict each individual "powering up", like they're being switched on! Geoff and Eli especially do well with the movements, like Eli lifting up his goggles as he raises his head from its previously bowed position.

(I genuinely can't tell what's around Geoff's neck. Goggles? I guess?)

(Also I spy the glint of Geoff's necklace chain!)

Maybe it's just me, but Layne looks especially good in this video. Idk whether it's something he did with his hair, or his outfit, or a bit of both or what, but man I am Looking 👀

But also, it was kinda cool to see shots of Layne whistling and doing a bit of vocal percussion while being otherwise totally motionless! (As if he hasn't yet been fully powered up yet or something?)

Aka the moment where I wish I knew how to make gifs, because screenshots don't get the point across for this one!

But like if you've seen the video (of course you have), then you know what I'm referring to. The little "glitch effects", where Cesar's movement briefly rewinds itself, and then slightly goes "fast-forward", just within a few short seconds! (At least one Patron said they had a moment of thinking their device was acting up when they first watched this video 😄)

See the thing on Geoff's right arm? That was part of his outfit from Sleeping In The Cold Below!

Also I only just properly noticed during this rewatch that Layne has some sort of fingerless glove(?) thing that goes halfway up his right forearm. (And Cesar seems to have some pair of yellow gloves hanging off his belt or something).

Kinda amusing that Eli just has a big helmet clipped up to his belt for the whole video and it doesn't even get worn (though there's a moment in the BTS for this video where he wears it, and it's a funny little scene 😁).

I wanna know where they got the tools from! (The BTS didn't say). Did Geoff get some stuff from his dad's shed like he did for Sixteen Tons? Did one of the other guys have a garden shed of their own that they grabbed stuff from?

THIS... is a very random thing but Geoff's hand movement here rung a bell in my mind, just a little moment of "I've seen him do that sort of movement before!" I believe he did it in Heavy Is The Crown, though I still haven't gone back to check, and I believe it's also a "c'mon"-accompanying gesture in Sixteen Tons and/or Seven Nation Army

On a different note, some Patrons have expressed amusement and/or befuddlement over how VP are meant to be portraying workers (or if you wanna be game-lore-accurate, wage slaves), but they're clean as a whistle in this video! (And it's not like we haven't seen them dirtied up before, and it's not like they don't still look incredibly good in such cases!). But they definitely didn't spare much effort in acquring literal tools to help sell the concept! 😄

I like the little moment of Layne and Cesar turning to look at each other here, still keeping the slightly robotic/animatronic movement style!

But seriously, I really love this little moment of Geoff appearing to fix/adjust part of his own arm; like it's clear that the handlebar thing he's wearing is meant to actually be part of his actual arm in this video, as part of his 'character'! (Oh and there's another very brief "glitch effect" as he does this motion, and there are exactly 2 frames where it's noticeable!)

(Also holy muscles Batman!!! Like my god sir how have you somehow become even more jacked? (I say with much affection and adoration))

This little "power-off" "fakeout" moment is an interesting touch for the video, and when I eventually get around to watching reaction videos for this, I'm sure I'll be seeing at least a few (or more) people wondering if the song is finished already at this point! (Also I haven't listened to the audio streaming track for this, but I have been informed in the Discord that the track on Spotify and other music platforms doesn't have this pause moment, and is an uninterrupted moment).

(Also this reminds me of being in drama club in high school. I have my reasons!)

Am I going insane or does this shot look slightly less saturated and/or slightly "colder" in temperature compared to the opening shot? Is it just the shot angle and how much of the background is being shown? Like showing more of the left-hand side?

Geoff always does a quick little introductory spiel for us Patrons when he gives us early access to a new video of his, and he mentioned Rick Underwood helping him out with makeup for this one (shoutout to Rick!), and I was like !!! 👀 !!!, and then the video started and I immediately forgot about it, until we got to this point, and I was like OH. OKAY THEN.

While we're on the subject of appearances, Geoff is wearing a black (or at least very dark grey) button-up shirt (with the top two buttons undone, naturally), which likely is an homage to "The Man In Black", Johnny Cash, the OG singer of this song, but also Geoff just wears a lot of black a lot of the time anyway, so it probably wasn't much effort on his part, lol

Also look at the candles in the background! Now they're all off/not glowing anymore! (The candles were rigged up in groups, I think, so they didn't always have to be switched on/off manually one-by-one, and could be controlled remotely instead).

Geoff makes the match-striking and candle-lighting look easy, but there were several takes where it did not go that smoothly. Either the match would refuse to light when struck against the side of the matchbox, or it would light up, but the head would also simultaneously break away from the stick and fly towards Geoff's hair or shirt! (He was fine, nothing caught on fire, including himself, but fam, please only strike a match away from yourself, not towards yourself!!!)

(Geoff jokes in the description that "I'm really glad that I didn't burn down the studio - no one should let me play with matches.")

I do kinda have to laugh at the way Geoff shakes the match in his hand quite vigorously to try and extinguish the flame after lighting the two candles. Like there was still enough time before the next vocal line that he could've just blown the match out and it would've been fine!

Oh and spot the gramophone in the background! It's been a while since it's been used in one of Geoff's videos - the last time was for his White Christmas video in December 2022! (Last year I made a photo compilation post of all the gramophone's past appearances, which you can find HERE!)

Aw, even when he's been made to look extra-old, he still has a lovely smile <3

(Also this is objectively still a better look than how he looked in VoicePlay's cover of Hide And Seek/Ding Dong! (As much as it was overall a great cover and a fantastically-produced video)

Y'know it would've been a nice touch if Geoff had had his pendant necklace visible for this video (i.e. sitting on/over his shirt rather than hidden under it), as an extra bit of sentimentality/symbolism for those who Know (it was an anniversary gift from Kathy and she has a matching one), but hey, he's still got both rings on, as always, clear as day!

Looking a little bit younger now!

I've only watched a small amount of reaction videos for this video, but of the ones I've seen, they didn't talk much (if at all) about the visual changes (and to be fair, I don't think I noticed this "intermediate stage" on my first watch), so all the more reason to talk about it here!

So in this first "slightly younger" change, Geoff's forehead no longer has those spots of discolouration up near his hairline, his skin is mayybee looking a bit smoother (less contouring on his cheeks, I think, so they don't look as thin/hollow), his eyebrows are back to being brown, not grey, and there's less greyness in his hair as well.

Look! Some of the candles in the background are lit again! (I like the candles in/on the shelf on the right - the glowing candles stand out so distinctly from the ones that aren't lit up.)

And in case you were wondering, a lot of this video was kinda sorta filmed "backwards", because obviously the most logical way to go about things was to first film all the scenes where no makeup was required, and to then get the makeup put on in stages, and film required shots after each stage. So basically "slightly older makeup", film scenes, "more older makeup", film scenes, "oldest makeup", film scenes. In other words, this scene was filmed before the previous one!

Now there are yet more candles switched on, and glowing, as Geoff is looking even younger! (Also glowing, one might say! 😜)

I'm using one of the previous screenshots for another comparison! Now Geoff's face definitely does look smoother (no longer so much emphasis on his forehead wrinkles, for example), there's a bit less redness/darkness under his eyes, and his hair is looking even more brown than before! (At this point I'm wondering if Geoff even retouched/coloured over some of his actual grey hair for this video - he's done so before, sometimes!)

In the Patreon BTS video, Kathy showed a picture of the shot list that she and Geoff were using for this video (as obviously with the candles and the makeup and stuff being filmed out-of-order, you gotta really make sure that you get everything you need, and that you get it right!). And it was even timestamped to the different sections of the song! So basically I took a screenshot and I'm using it to help make sure I don't miss anything! And I'll note that this scene we've switched to is listed as "older makeup 1 shots", so we're not totally all the way there yet!

GOD he's so pretty!

This was more or less the point when I started yelling because of how dang sweet this is!!! They're so cute together!! (Fortunately I was home by myself when this dropped to Patreon, because legit I was dying of cuteness too much to stay silent!)

Basically I went from "no stop it hold on wait omg" (cuteness overload, dying of joy) to "no stop it hold on no wait how dare you" (suffering, dying of pain) /lh

Even if you went into this expecting it to become sad (again), you might expect Kathy's hand to just fade away into nothingness, kinda like how she did during the first scene transition at the start, but the sudden cut to Most-Old Geoff with his hand still outstretched and that expression on his face is much more of a gutpunch honestly.

(And once again, the candles in the background are all out!)

Adding extra footage of Geoff and Kathy being happy together as Old-And-Alone Geoff staggers over to the chair is diabolical work, btw (affectionate)

And the picture is of Geoff and Kathy being old together! 🥺

The photo tells the audience that in this universe, within the narrative weaved by the video, Kathy (or the character version of Kathy, anyway) didn't die young - her and Geoff still lived a long, happy life together. But as Geoff reminisces and thinks about Kathy as he sings, he appears to become younger, because Kathy makes/made him feel younger! Which is of course adorable. (There's a comic on Tumblr that this kinda reminds me of, but I can't remember who it's by so I'd have no luck finding it).

The photo and these last scenes were pretty much the last things done on the day - some random other polaroid square was used for the rest of the shots.

And the camera pulls back, and now Geoff's gone too, but the candles on the table are still burning! (One short, one tall...)

At least we get to see Best Boi Tommy (Geoff's dog) during the credits/outro (footage from the BTS video) to help lift our spirits after that emotional rollercoaster of a video! 😄

What a freaking CHOICE it was to have Geoff be the very first person we see and hear in this song. Like goddamn they're pulling no punches!

Behind Geoff, we have a body of water illuminated by an Aurora Borealis, (certainly nicer than the background he had for My Mother Told Me!), and off to the right, there's a viking ship, which maybe has a fire on it, so either a viking funeral ship, or simply a ship which has caught on fire from a dragon attack.

Also in regards to the dragon flying in the background behind Geoff in the previous shot, I like that the video also adds in the sound effect of the dragon flapping its wings as it comes closer to the foreground, just to make it that extra bit immersive!

In the background is a small village, and behind that I believe is a fjord? I can see some mountains and a bit of water where some ships are.

Does that coat look familiar? It should! It's now been worn by every current permanent member of VoicePlay! (Yes, I am in fact going to make a post dedicated to it at some point). Layne wore this coat (with the embroided arm cuff and the thin fluffy grey trim going down) in both My Mother Told Me and Valhalla Calling, as his appearance was pretty much identical between those two videos, but now the coat has been handed off to Cesar! (But he does also appear to be wearing an extra fur cloak thing on top of it)

Additionally, the dark grey glossy "chestplate" thing is I think something that J wore in Valhalla Calling and My Mother Told Me?

And again you can hear sounds of the dragon flying through the air! (Pretty sure it's not on the main audio track, and thus I'm talking about it here instead).

Also I just realized now that these shots (dragon-Layne-dragon) are fully on beat, which is cool!

No water to be found here, but there's fire both in the foreground and in the background!

I like the blue colour of Eli's tunic(?) - immediately made me think of Astrid ngl

I also actually kinda like how Eli's left foot is partially obscured by a small rock, and his right foot is hidden entirely by a large one that he's standing behind! It adds a bit of extra "depth" to the scene!

Fun fact: 11 days before Patrons received Hunt The Sky, we were given a sneak peek image, but the screenshot only showed close-up images (head to torso) of J, Cesar, and Eli. No backgrounds were shown, and no shot of Geoff or Layne either. Honestly it was probably for the best - we would have lost our dang minds had we seen what Geoff looked like ahead of time 😂

Us Patrons who get to watch monthly webchats did know that there was an arm tattoo involved (Geoff told us how much of a pain it was to fully remove), and so I was excited to see what it was, and boy it didn't disappoint! It's an incredible design, but man oh man it would be such a pain if somebody were planning to make fanart based on this video! (*cough cough*)

Also this is the most facial hair we've seen Geoff have in a VoicePlay video, and the most natural facial hair he's had for any video! (i.e., that ain't fake!) It makes sense - of course a fearsome, rugged viking man wouldn't be clean-shaven! (As much as I think Geoff looks very nice in Valhalla Calling ^^;) (Geoff was quite keen to shave as soon as he could after he was done filming his parts though - the beard was apparently driving him a little crazy, lol)

You can't see any water in the background here, but you can see a boat, so I'm assuming that there is in fact water back there (and hey! no fire!). But another cool thing about his background is that in some shots, there are flashes of lightning in the top right area where the clouds are!

I just realised that J's shoes are actually just regular black boots (and very shiny ones at that), but they're just partially covered by the furry leg warmer thingies (which kinda look like the same ones that Eli also wears in this video, and in fact absolutely could be the same pair, as everyone's parts were done one-by-one, so no two people were in full costume at one time).

Also goddamn how many different fur coats/cloaks have VoicePlay worn for different videos? Excluding That Specific Coat(tm), I'm not sure if there's any fur thing that has ever been reworn by anyone!

I'm not really sure what the proper term is, but I love the design at the front of the wide "belt" thing that J's wearing. It's got dragons (or at least some sort of serpent creatures) on it, and then Nordic runes around the border of it!

In terms of appearances, the thing that's remained most consistent with the guys across the three videos (or two, in Cesar's case), is their makeup, but particularly for J and Cesar. As usual, Rick Underwood was credited with makeup design, but he wasn't actually the one applying the makeup on set this time! That credit goes to a woman by the name of Alexis Rios, according to the video description. I was surprised to not see him at all in the BTS video for this, and to see someone else doing the makeup instead, but I think I've heard that he's been employed by Universal Studios to help with the new Epic Universe theme park? So that's definitely pretty cool. And hey, Alexis did a great job! Totally nailed the assignment!

I can't really capture it in still images, but this is a cool moment that I wanna talk about regardless. On the first "no rest till we hunt the sky" There's a shot of Cesar, starting to raise his left hand, and then there's a shot of Geoff, raising his left hand from a slightly higher position, like continuing the same motion!

I'm no weapons expert, but it's probably not the safest or the most effective method to hold an axe so close to the blade, right? Also I've heard of dual-wielding swords, but dual-wielding axes? Is that actually a thing? It doesn't seem very practical, but I guess it looks cool, if nothing else (though there've definitely been Patrons joking about how most of guys look like they've never handled a weapon in their life 😂)

I wanted at least one shot of all five of them together in this post, and I like how in this video, the order that they're all shown in doesn't always stay the same! And usually the person who's doing the lead vocals at the current moment is put in the middle if they have all 5 of them on screen!

(And by sheer luck/coincidence, this positioning/lineup order is identical to the thumbnail for My Mother Told Me, except with Cesar instead of Jose of course)

The first time I saw this, the reaction my brain had was basically just "!!!!!!!"

I think back to my Voiceplay Visuals for Seven Nation Army, where I said that I would've loved to see Geoff swinging his sledgehammer at stuff (well I called it a bat, but y'know). This is a totally different vibe, and totally different look for Geoff, but hey, I'll certainly take it!

(Fun fact: he actually threw his axe at Layne! (Layne was holding up like a pillow I think? (or a board) to protect his face, so he was fine, and it's just a prop axe, obviously)

Oh and the sound in the video of Geoff throwing the axe is not actually a stock sound effect! Layne couldn't find a sound that suited what he was looking for, so he just... did it himself! Y'know, as you do! (He also did a couple of the sound effects in Valhalla Calling)

Imo, a world where dragons exist is a world where a B0 subharmonic is fully audible to the human ear*, and in that world, if I heard something like that come out of someone looking like this, I'd probably start running away very quickly, or at least hope to gods that I wasn't an enemy of his!

*(very low subharmonics are often very quiet sounding without any microphone usage and/or post-production editing. It's not really a skill issue or anything like that, it's just physics of sound waves and stuff, combined with our hearing limitations).

And that's Hunt The Sky! Y'know this year I've been thinking about how I've just been waiting for a 2025 VoicePlay cover to really come and fully blow me away and knock me off my feet, and well, I got one! I found it! Boy did they ever deliver!

Honestly this is gonna be hard to beat in terms of my favourite VoicePlay cover for 2025. Like unless they do another Disney song cover this year (*cough* Gaston *cough*), this might easily remain in my top spot for the rest of the year. And hey, I'll let you in on a little secret: this is not the last VoicePlay original planned! We might not get another till like 2026 maybe. idk, but we will definitely get at least one or two more at some point!

Actually I might as well spend a bit of time talking about their clothing now, since there's gonna be even more costuming (and makeup) stuff to talk about quite shortly.

Geoff is wearing a key around his neck again! (Idk whether it's got any story significance or just meant to be a 90s fashion thing, but this is like the third or fourth time Geoff has worn a key necklace for a video if you count both VoicePlay's channel and his). Eli's got glasses on again! (First time since 2022 if you don't count Jingle Bell Rock or the Jump In The Line Mini). Also I like Cesar's necklace! (It's part of the character look)

(Also I kinda love the "a memory in every byte/bite" tagline)

I'm a little sad that the CDs they're using have the original On Lyne visual graphics, i.e. before Zeke's design got updated (to look more like Geoff), but oh well.

...I'm Sure It's Fine. Nothing to worry about, guys!

(Also fun fact: part of that was done in editing of course, but part of that was also just done by Kathy off to the side flicking the light switch off and on again! 😆)

Now we get to the bit that was seen in the teaser video! (And man I hope I don't hit image limit!)

It does bug me just a tiny bit that there are four spotlights in the back and not five, but oh well, teensy nitpick, it's not really that big of a deal.

Actually, while I'm talking about lights, I gotta shoutout Eli as usual, but also a guy by the name of Anthony Baldwin for both working on lighting design!

Lights up! I'll get to costuming again in a moment, but let's talk about set design!

I didn't actually fully register it until I was watching the BTS, but the floor is wet! (Or like a thin layer of water mopped over it anyway). Like with VP's Running Up That Hill video, it gives a cool (and even creepy/otherworldly) vibe to the scene thanks to the reflection effect, but I guess it also helps with some of the footwork, like doing easy spins and stuff (but be careful not to slip!)

There's also empty pizza boxes strewn around (shoutout to Kathy for doing a lot of work with those!), and there's even a metal lighting rig(?) thing at the back left of the shot that's tipped over in a way that implies that stuff has been wrecked!

(Oh boy getting clear screenshots from this is gonna be a Challenge huh).

Okay so like all of the guys' outfits are visibly dirtier and "tattier" than they were in the intro clip (more indication of whatever infection/infestation they've fallen victim to). But like while the others have clothes that are like moth-eaten, or have small holes, or rips in the hem and sleeves and stuff, Mister Geoffrey Castellucci has now had his shirt ripped open all the way down to his midriff/stomach area. I literally had to pause a couple of times to be like "wait are my eyes deceiving me?" No. No they were not. (definitely a "new record" for a YouTube video!)

Anyway the design thing on his forehead is cool, if you look past the fact that it makes it look like he's got no eyebrows!

Oooh I like this shot. Also maybe the four background spotlights are alright after all without needing a fifth.

This video was directed by both Layne and Tony (Tony helped out a lot with choreography and stage direction during the shoot), and Layne also did the arrangement for this one (though Eli is also credited with "additional arranging", funnily enough)

Even when infected/infested, Cesar continues to slay! Love the lipstick, love the fishnet arm thing! Also his left eye looks kinda purple in this shot and I'm guessing it's just the lighting, but it could be a contact lens, idk

Look how cool Eli looks! He had a relatively simple outfit compared to the other guys, but I guess that just means more to work with for the "post-transformation" stage! Look at the things on his shirt! (Claws? Plant tendrils? Alien things? Idk!) And the designs on his head!

Here's where I give credit where credit is due to Rick Underwood and Renette Feren, but also a woman named Jacqueline Coleman, as all three of them helped with makeup and prosthetics for this one! And of course Rick and Renette always do a stunning job.

The very first hint that any of us got pertaining to what VoicePlay was up to was when Omar posted on his Insta story when he was getting this makeup/face stuff put on him! Some people thought it looked kinda dragon-y, and yeah it still does! Like half a face of dragon scales! Cool!

Cool brief black-and-white "glitch" with distortion effect!

Okay but why does that picture low-key have such a vibe to it honestly

And can't forget a couple shots of Layne! He's got a kinda sorta "dragon-scales" thing on his face too, but yellow and wrapping from one cheek to another, up over his forehead (and blocking his eyebrows like with Geoff's face thing)

"DJ spins the track!"

Eli going over to Layne as Layne imitates being a "disc jockey" and doing the kinda record-scratch movements was honestly kinda cute? Also funny because the "DJ" of the group is DJ RoM, who's being portrayed by Omar, but of course Layne is your best bet for being able to make all those turntable noises by himself!

Omar does a very smooth spin on "the boys are in sync...", and in fact you can briefly see a bit of water 'splash' out from his feet as he does so!

A better shot of the side of Cesar's face! Also lighting colour change for the bridge(?) section!

Omar still has his portable CD player that he had in the intro clip, love that.

Also this is a better shot of some of the dirt, rips, and tears in some of the guys' clothing (but no one got a super low v-neck except Geoff, pfft)

I guess once you've seen videos like Thriller and Classical Chaos and Kidnap The Sandy Claws and stuff, makeup looks like this really aren't too hard to "get used to". (Also is it weird of me to say that the yellow-green stuff on his forehead kinda brings out his eyes a little bit?)

(And I can tell by the glimpse of the two necklace chains I see here that Geoff is, as always, still wearing the necklace that he always wears as well as the key necklace! <3)

And that's Party Of Your Lifetime! Honestly it's just a really fun video with a really upbeat, energetic song, and I'm so happy for VoicePlay that they got this cool opportunity! They deserve all the recognition and more!

As to be expected, Eli is credited with lighting, but he also helped out with the fog machine things shown here in this image (the one on the left is more visible here). VoicePlay hadn't worked with these things before, but they worked amazingly, and it's another thing to give the video similarities to the original movie scene. However, these things were actually Quite Loud

Not the clearest image but look at Layne and Cesar being all sneaky/creepy here! (Layne does a little skip-step thing in this shot here that's brief but kinda reminds me just a touch of his little run in This Is Halloween)

Rick Underwood the man that you are, please, let me shake your hand, I love you (whether I'll still love him after the Halloween video remains to be determined, but anyway)

I mean honestly this is a Whole Look and I adore every part of it. The "facial scruff", the eyeliner, the freaking awesome jacket, the hair... I'm gonna stop myself from rambling too much too early ^^;

"I know that your powers of retention... are as wet as a warthog's backside."

A couple of things here:

1, You would probably expect Layne to just be another hyena (after all, there's many more than just Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed in the original scene), but it's possible that he might have intended to be a warthog, given this moment here (and also at the end of the BTS there's a clip of Layne messing around with one of the smoke/fog machines in a very Pumbaa-esque manner, lol).

And 2, credit to @ambular-d who first noticed this and pointed it out in the Discord server: Layne dips his shoulder here, "like Geoff's casual disdainful little swipe has some strength behind it." (directly quoting them here)

There is no real style coordination here and yet somehow it works (well they're all in black/dark grey so they've got that in common). But like Cesar's got a grey leopard-print jumper/sweater (kinda cute ngl), Mykal's got a black fluffy (fringed?) shirt/sweater thing, and Eli's got a black leather jacket on (he looks very cool in it though - definitely suits him)

Mykal's the only one of the total five who isn't wearing some sort of necklace, but I guess he makes up for it with the bones hanging from the top of his head (and for all I know that actually might be a necklace that he just wrapped around the base of his hairbun)

ALSO I just went to go check my post for Friends On The Other Side because I was wondering if Cesar's necklace here was one of the ones worn by Geoff or Layne in that video, and I don't think it is (too short), but I'm 90% certain that Eli's necklace here is one of the same ones that Geoff was wearing!

Also it took me an embarassingly-large amount of watches to realize that Cesar had painted nails for this one (in my defence, I was very distracted 😂)

This is also a good place to point out how the lighting has changed from green to yellow, just as it does in the original scene, and it changed at the same spot as well (right on or just before the "it's great that we'll soon be connected..." line)

Oh rip it is tough to get good screencaps for this one (probably at least partially due to all the fog)

Anyway I wanted to point out that Layne's a little over an inch taller than Geoff (possibly two inches if you count the hair, lol), but in this one he mostly stays at least a little hunched, at least when Geoff's next to him, making Geoff look equal height if not taller (and from a storytelling perspective, it's great!)
