Podcast Fansplaining was first released in 2015 and is still going strong. Hosts Elizabeth Minkel and Flourish Klink recorded over two hundred episodes that dig into fandom and fan culture.

In one review, a listener said of Fansplaining: "They are doing what fans call Meta, asking big questions about how fandom works, who gets included or excluded from fandom, how fans intersect with the industry or journalism, why fans do what they do -- in other words, it is about fandom culture and its practices, not about the shows fans love."

The interesting question at this point is not whether fan fiction can be good, by familiar literary standards. (Of course it can; cf. Virgil.) Rather, it’s this: What is fan fiction especially, or uniquely, good at, or good for?

Call for papers for Documenting Performance Symposium 2017, 6th and 7th November, at City, University of London. 

We’re looking at how tech has influenced the ways that performers and audiences document, record and archive performance.

Since fandom is my thing, I’d be really interested to see if any fan peeps are inspired by this, as I reckon we fans are some of the most innovative in the way we capture live performance, such as cosplay, LARPing, videogame play-throughs, and many other dynamic forms of fan content.  

Are you an academic who has written on Hannibal and are planning on attending Fannibal Fest in Toronto (@fannibalfest-toronto​)? Would you like to be on a panel? Have you had a piece accepted in one of the upcoming edited volumes or presented at the Australia conference? If so please message me! I'm chairing an academic panel at the convention. Hope to have a wide range of disciplines (I'm a sociologist). Just getting an idea to gauge interest right now.

If you are someone who has a background in the humanities or social sciences and has substantial knowledge about fandom (some academic background in fan-studies is helpful, but personal experience in fandom counts for something), you may want to consider applying.

PLEASE NOTE: The job is in LA and you either need to be local or be able to relocate easily for the job.

Master’s degree preferred, but Bachelor’s is all that is required. There is a slight preference for anthropology (as the department head is an anthropologist) but some of my colleagues have backgrounds in English, sociology, mine is in Women’s/Gender studies. 

ALSO, while much of what we do is qualitative research and analysis, if you have any kind of quant-data analysis background, that is very much in need!
