Towards a History of the Professional: On the Class Composition of the Research University
The history of the university, in the United States and beyond, is the history of the self-organized activity of men and women who developed the practice of their labor into a new field and, in doing so, created a new institution – the modern research university – to determine, within the boundaries set by capitalist social relations, the conditions under which they practiced.
