Abyhasa and Vairagya
Abhyasa : effort, willpower, practice.
Vairagya : letting go, acceptance, detachment.Â
The ideas of abyhasa and vairagya have followed me closely since the end of my first training weekend. I find that as I continue to stay disciplined with my home practice, that it is quite easy to cultivate a healthy sense of non-attachment. I have to admit, I can be an incredibly jealous person. I can feel so much pain because I want something I do not have. But I'm slowly feeling less pain. I understand that what I have is enough for me. And so I continue living my life the way I want: with peace of mind.
Peace of mind is paramount. Although it's unrealistic to expect it to be with me 24/7, I find it an absolute need for a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. I find that having peace of mind helps me go through life more delicately, life becomes less of an unbearable struggle and more of a beautiful struggle. As someone who was once very depressed and had suicidal idealization, I know how important it is to be able to cultivate peace of mind and quiet my ruminations.
In matters of school, I find that I am less concerned about how "smart" I seem. When it comes down to it, all that matters is that I learned something and wrestled with the learning material. If I do not get a perfect score, it does not reflect poorly on me as a person. I find that I am absorbing the learning material in school easier when I do not feel the need to be perfect. The same goes when it comes to me realizing that I do not have the same privileges as some people... My lack of money and talents does not make me less.
