I see any unadaptable and rigid system of thought as ineffective in causing evolutionary change as the perpetuation and ideological policing of such systems are usually means of supporting or reordering insular hierarchies to suit powerful in-groups.
Precisely.
absurdlakefront replied to your post “The Problem with Marxism”
What people rail against are their feelings of impotence and dissatisfaction with the status quo. They want change, and engage with an easily encountered social philosophy that challenges that status quo and convert to find social acceptance.
There's certainly nothing wrong with challenging the status quo. It's necessary to make progress. Traditional values constantly need to be questioned. There's also nothing wrong with being angry and dissatisfied with the way things are and trying to find outlets to express that dissatisfaction. I certainly can't blame people for reacting to the status quo by adopting an ideology that is extreme in the completely opposite direction. I just worry that it's shortsighted, clouded by incomprehensible and hostile language, and often incites violence.
If you're really dissatisfied, you would take steps towards reforms that actually work. You would work to fight for policies that actually make a difference. Thinking that it's even remotely possible that there would ever be a violent Marxist uprising in the U.S. is just as ridiculous as right wing extremists thinking their guns are going to save them from the "socialist government takeover."
@absurdlakefront
she was amazing!
I assume you would like to travel, it's sort of the modern equivalent of a pilgrimage for meaning. Where do you most want to go, who do you most want to meet, and what do you most want to see?
Hmmmmmm….
I’m not so much for going other places to find myself or meaning in my life. For the past couple years I’ve been dreaming of a west coast tour starting in Los Angeles and stopping in San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. I’ve got friends and loved ones all up the coast and I miss them dearly.
Also, I’ve been missing the woods a lot. There’s a state park in western Massachusetts called Bash-Bish Falls that I spent time at growing up and while I was in college and it’s a really wonderful place.
Otherwise, there are a lot of art museums I’d love to see. Pretty much anywhere I go I try to see their museums.
ETA: I suppose I should mention that my parents lived in Switzerland for a while and I've spent a lot of time in various places around Europe, which may have quelled any desire I have for experiences as an auslander.

absurdlakefront replied to your post: I had to automatically add “Link:” on my theme...
You do find excellent links, which speaks well to your knowledge and likely your writing ability. I tend to prefer links to writing, because I find source material the most direct way to communicate without muddying it up with my interpretation.
Same for me. Also, the reason why I don't write original content on here is because I always feel like some people are more knowledgeable than me, or can just express things better than I do, especially since English is not my first language. I guess that's what happens when you're used to reading great writers. It's hard to not compare yourself to other writers that have been speaking and writing in English for their entire lives. Still, I love face-to-face or online conversations so I suppose it's just about having a larger audience and a lack of confidence.

I always find this difference striking. It’s almost as if the gravity of so many people makes time seem to speed up when I’m in the city.
I think that's a perfect way to put it.
