Fear of Death: A Rachel Rising Story (one-shot) (2026)

"Before I made comics, I was a TV editor. Basically, my job was to sort through lots of footage and make a condensed version using only the key moments. In comics, I purposely augmented my editing to include extra time before and after key moments. I did this for two reasons.

"First, in a coffee commercial, the guy sips coffee and says, "Damn, that's good!" We know nothing about this guy, how can we trust his opinion? But in Strangers in Paradise, I might show that the cup chosen was grandma's and after the first sip, Francine walks in and asks if Katchoo poured a cup for her. Katchoo didn't — she's not awake yet; Francine says, "You never think about me." And now we're picking up last night's fight where we left off. That's the difference between a coffee commercial and a cup of coffee in a story. We still don't know if the coffee is any good, but it was never about the coffee, was it? What's it going to take to get this relationship in sync? That's what we want to know. The more you know, the more you care. Cutting from key moment to key moment cheats you out of the down time that makes it mean something.

"Second, wouldn't you like to know what they said when you weren't in the room?"
