DARK WEB: X-MEN #2 (OF 3) GERRY DUGGAN (W) • ROD REIS (A) Cover by PHIL NOTO REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO BAD! Some reunions – like those with an evil ex who rules a dimension of demons – are not so great. Sometimes even having your AMAZING FRIENDS at your side isn't enough to save things.
It looks like Maddie is immediately going bad again, and of course this thing is written by Gerry Fucking Duggan. It had to be Duggan. I mean, I understand why, he’s the current writer on the main title, but I don’t trust Duggan with Maddie. I don’t trust Duggan with any story requiring actual nuance and complexity for the characters, or anything that isn’t writing super-heroes doing “cool” feats and fawning all over his favorites.
On the other hand, given how much Duggan seems to like clumsy attempts at feminism and girl-bosses, maybe it’ll turn out he actually likes Maddie and he’ll write her very sympathetically? I mean, he spent all of Devil’s Reign continuing to white-wash Emma’s past, and given that Madelyne started out as an actual hero (yes, Jean clone, but unaware of her past she was a genuinely heroic member of the X-Men for awhile), maybe Duggan will give Maddie similar treatment? If he can redeem Wilhelmina, surely he can give us further redemption of Maddie rather than pushing her back into being “Scott’s evil ex.” Please, Duggan.
