Brotherhood preGLADNIS- Ignis keeps it quiet, but before he moves in with Noctis, He lived with his elderly grandmother- his last living relative. This is how he became such a good care taker- but she too passes away. When Gladio senses him mentally shutting down- He takes him to the training room- makes him work out his feelings. Gladio teaches him throws, he pushes him hard- and it triggers a breakdown. The sparring ends in comforting, Gladio promises him, he will have a family again one day.
IâmâŠIâm broken now. You won. Take the ten points, anon. You just broke my heart, are you content? I amâŠoh Astrals, please donât make me cry, donât. I justâŠ
Anon. This is sad, but itâs also so real. Thatâs what makes it even sadder.
Dear Ramuh, let me, just, give me a second.
I enjoy greatly of this as an explanation of how heâs such a good care-taker. It makes sense, you know? Not only as some sort of nurse, but also in the sewing and cooking part. Doesnât want his grandma to deal with such things so he learns himself.
Ignis âmotherlyâ being could easily come from there; he mirrors the treatment he once had with grandmother, and only develops further when itâs his turn to nanny her.Â
This breaks me a little. WellâŠit breaks me enough.
What I personally love most of this is how you suggest Gladio handles it- heâs not feeling pity and goes to cuddle the hell out of him, like some people believe he would only because âitâs cuteâ. No way; he knows what pain feels like, and he knows the best way to deal with them because he has had Noctis do the same, probably.
Did you know, anon, that in psychology they say that anger is only a mask, which in reality hides sadness?Â
I imagine it to be Ignisâ strongest, toughest work-out so far, with Gladio only pushing him harder on it. He may be rude and Ignis may grow personally angered at him during it, but Gladio wonât mind, because he just knows itâs going to help him and that itâs what he needs.
I believe Ignis at first may not have wanted to agree to training; âitâs not the moment, Gladiolusâ, but Amicitia eventually leads him there.During it he delivers comments of the sort, âIs that the best you can do!?â, âWhat kind of weakling is part of the princeâs Crownsguard!?â, âDo you call that a hit!?â and, reaching the end during sparring, more comments regarding âWhat would your grandmother think if she saw you like this?ââAngry?ââNo. So fucked up. And weak.â
Gladio wonât admit it and will try twice his best than usual, but truth is heâs having troubles sparring with Ignis. The man is so fired up and so angered by this point that heâs almost literally one big flame, and heâs unstoppable. Still, Gladio will continue to piss him off on purpose, yelling at him, making comments and hitting him when he gets the chance.
âAre you angry!?ââOf course I am!ââDo you call this anger!?âIgnis will growl in a yell.âCome on! Is this all the anger you have? Does it really hurt so little that you donât have more!?ââShut up!ââWhy are you angry!?ââI donât know!ââWhy the fuck are you angry!?ââI donât know!ââWhy the fuck are you-!?ââBecause it hurts!â
Screaming that out, Ignis is going to hit Gladioâs double-hand sword so hard heâs going to unarm him, but the hit was so violent he let go of his own sword, and he stumbled. Gladio, expecting this would happen at some point, dumbly but effectively grabs him before falling, and the change is immediate; as soon as he grabs him Ignis buries the face in his chest and, for once, he lets somebody hug him for an entire hour while he simply breaks down.
The scene isâŠso harmful and sad.
Both standing in the middle of the training hall, sweating, Gladio hugging him and Ignis holding onto his shirt tightly and simply sobbing like heâs never done before, and really not caring; even if he cared, he simply just canât stop, and if he tries the sobbing just grows uglier and louder, and heâs hating himself for it because he feels so damn weak.
Itâs going to take Ignis an hour before somewhat calming, but Gladio wonât let go. Ignis feels humiliated; he tends to force himself to never show any emotion, so having broken down this bad and in such an ugly way, itâs embarrassing him. So he canât look up at Gladio, and doesnât get away because, that way, he can keep the head rested on his chest, not only for comfort but also because, that way, his face stays hidden from the young Shield.
Itâs not like Gladio plans to let go, either.
âI know it hurts, Ignisâ Gladio whispers to him, not looking down, the eyes lost in the distance and arms firm around the other. âEverything comes to an end, inevitably. But, every time something leaves your life, something new comes not to replace it but to carry on.â
Very surprisingly to Ignis, heâs going to feel Gladio nuzzling at the top of his head, and press a tiny kiss to it.
âI donât know when, or how, but youâre going to have family one day again, blood related or not.â
Gladio will caress his hair, still hugging him.
Anon, you broke me, thank you but what the hell but thank you, gawd.
