"It’s very inspiring to see local mythology told in such a refreshing and modern way. I heard of most of the Caribbean lore growing up, but it was always from generations ago, grandparents stories. Hardears shows that island folk lore is in no way dead. From the Soucoyant and Douen, Barbadian and Caribbean classics, to the inventive take on vibes and flying fish, this work takes elements that are rooted in Caribbean culture, dusts them off and makes them completely exciting again. This story was a page turner, with quick paced action and well developed characters. The artwork was hypnotising, yet with subtle, muted colours that make a great contrast to typical the more traditional, bright and saturated Caribbean artwork. Caribbean fantasy is currently an under-utilised genre, but Hardears shows how much potential it has. It’s a wonderful satire of Barbadian history riddled with politics, rebellion and social hierarchies - and pirates of course.
