You.... actually like Ride Or Die??? ...Can I ask why?????? 🤔🤔
I was thoroughly outed last night.
So initially I started playing RoD for the diamonds. I had zero interest in it. I haven’t seen any Fast and Furious movies and I don’t particularly love cars more than as a tool to get me places.
The beginning of the book was hysterical, ludicrous insanity. It was everything I thought a book with the tag line “A Bad Boy Romance” would be. Cheesy, obvious, and a little cringey. There was no hidden potential aside from better relationship development: make these guys an actual found family, make them show it in complicated ways because really this type of life is not guaranteed, and give Colt some sort of evolution. His similarities to Drake, only without any freaking chapter to chapter development, turns me off entirely. It was something I’d click through rapidly, vaguely reading the story, in five to ten minutes.
Then, THEN, Chapter ten happens and it colors the WHOLE story differently. Who knows what and when? How do their feelings towards Wren (my MC) change? I’m fucking REPLAYING this story with this ridiculous tag line because it entirely subverted expectations better than any story Choices has. Like yea, there were gasping, pearly clutching moments in TRR, D&D, and other books but these moments of intrigue and drama were expected. These books were marketed as such. A. BAD. BOY. ROMANCE. Does not elicit this sort of sentiment.
Perhaps the most clever thing about RoD is the tagline. It made us all assume this was some vanilla lame bad boy romance book but it’s about a lot more.
It’s about found family and how oftentimes blood means nothing. It’s about the system failing people like Logan so that they feel they have no choice but to cling to whatever isn’t literally the worst thing ever. It’s about doing what you need to survive and how sometimes that makes you morally grey or a bad person depending on who reads your story. It’s about the intentions of someone you trust and care about not being in your best interest. Naturally sometimes the ball is dropped and things could be much more fulfilling and deep, but I think it has a lot of potential. Logan always yelling “get your hands off me”?! Why? Think of the implications. He’s a total good guy that the system failed. It’s unfortunately plagued by the episodic treatment, resulting in what feels like character development then them reverting the next chapter. It doesn’t have anywhere near as good of representation as it could for wlw. It absolutely didn’t need to be a f!MC locked book and Logan didn’t HAVE to be a male. Think of the possibilities! I like RoD for its potential.
Listen, I dragged RoD when it was announced. I wanted A Bad Car Romance, A Lesbian Car Romance, A Good Boy Romance, A Bad Girl Romance. I wanted something that hadn’t been done 500 times over as a fanfic. I wrote a fucking post about Logan’s Devore being a Transformer that was in love with him. PB played us for fools.
