Kurt knew who had to look like such a stereotype. As Puck went down on one knee, his hands had flown to his mouth as he gasped. It shouldn't have been such a surprise; the years they had been together had gone longer than high school and after what their relationship went through in the beginning, nothing would be as hard as that.

It had just been a normal dinner, though. Yes, it was the anniversary of their first "I love you" and Noah had taken him out instead of preparing a dinner like usual, but Kurt didn't think anything of it.

It was only when the waiter came by with a single rose that Kurt thought anything about it. Kurt took it, turning to give Noah a smile--Puck had sort of made his thing giving him one single rose, buying him a bouquet one flower at a time--only to find Noah on one knee.

The ring was plain but beautiful, the perfect match to his skintone. Finally, Kurt mutely nodded, tears in his eyes much like when they first said they loved each other years earlier. "Yes," he finally gasped out, "Of course I'll marry you." Puck slipped the ring on his finger and Kurt pulled him up into a kiss. 

As the applause started to fall, Kurt gave Puck one last kiss and whispered, "I love you so much...and I got a ring for you last week."

Living with a musician never got easier. True, Kurt and Puck had the luxury of Puck being a very successful one and the whole being in love with each other thing, but it still wasn't easy. Most people would assume Kurt just didn't like a noisy apartment, but that wasn't true. Sometimes, yes, he had a headache after work and just wanted peace and quiet, but then he'd fall asleep to Puck working on a piano composition and be woken up by Puck kissing him awake for dinner. 

That was fine. The worst times were when Puck had to travel. He'd be gone for days at a time, sometimes weeks, and Kurt would miss nothing more than the sweet, musical sounds in their apartment. He'd miss the duets they'd play, the music they shared, the cuddling as they watched Netflix together. He'd miss everything.

It was when Puck came back from such a trip, a trip to London, that it all happened. It was a Saturday, a snowy one, and Kurt was glad Puck had just gotten back in time for him to avoid the weather. He expected him to want to cuddle and sleep most of the day because of his jet lag, but he didn't. In fact, he had a ton of energy, bursting around their apartment preparing something that included dinner.

Kurt was curious but knew better than to get in his way. He just sat in their room and read for a bit until Puck called him out. The dinner was pleasant and delicious, just like every dish Puck made, but nothing was unusual until he pulled out a bottle of Champagne. Kurt raised his eyebrows, only for Noah to tell him he had stopped in Paris and flew back from there, buying an actual bottle of real champagne to bring home. 

"Why did you fly out from Paris? And why didn't you tell me?" Kurt asked, curious as to why Puck didn't tell him about visiting his homeland. Did he worry he'd be jealous? But Puck ignored those questions, asking him if he'd do him a favor and play a piece he'd been working on. His fingers were tired, he said, and he needed someone to play through a few measures to hear it out loud.

Kurt agreed. He always loved playing Puck's music. He sat down at their piano, a grand, the prize of their house, and started playing. It was a rather simple melody, very Parisian in sound, and Kurt got into the movement of the piece easily. Then, as he hit a climactic ending chord, there was a buzzing.

That was odd. He hit the top note of the chord, the highest in the piece, and heard it again. Something was in the piano. Kurt lifted up the piano lid and almost dropped it when he saw a glimpse of silver.

"Get it out," Puck said, already down on one knee at Kurt's side. Kurt felt tears as he looked it over, the ring looking very familiar. "I called your dad, got your aunt's number from him. My gig in London ended last week; I spent this week in Paris with your aunt--very boozy, by the way." He laughed a bit and took the ring from Kurt's hands. "She said it was your mom's favorite ring. Obviously that meant they had to expand it a bit to fit the ring size I got from you--"

"Get on wiz it," Kurt said, still smiling and crying but getting impatient. Puck shook his head and made some comment about him being bossy.

"Kurt Oliver Hummel," he started, "Will you marry me, French Fry?"

Kurt laughed a bit at Puck's stupid nickname, growing a bit fonder of it every day. "My name is Kurt," he corrected, just like he had done every time he said it since college. "God, why do I love you again?" Kurt asked, wiping under his eyes before saying. "Oui. Oui, mon amour, mon fiancé," Kurt burst out, his smile growing as Noah slipped on his mother's favorite piece of jewelry. Puck got up on his feet and Kurt kissed him moving him towards the bedroom. "Je t'aime," Kurt murmured as they finally reached his bed. 

"Love you too, Frenchie."

The thing with dating a rich guy was that, honestly, Kurt never knew if he was going out for a special occasion or if Noah had just forgotten that most people didn't have access to the places he did on a daily basis. First world problems, of course, but it did make for some interesting challenges. There was the time Kurt had made Puck a tie for their six month anniversary and, after being taken to one of the top Italian restaurants, Kurt gave it to him only to realize he hadn't realized it was their anniversary but was just taking him out for a nice dinner.

Kurt may have kicked Noah out of his own bed and onto the couch. But his couch cost more than Kurt's apartment at the time, so it wasn't a big punishment.

The thing with dating a rich guy who happened to be twice as old as Kurt was, honestly, the main problem they had to face. There were the questions from well meaning friends and teachers asking if Noah was Kurt's dad. They seemed to make Noah laugh, but Kurt would blush and explain, no, they were dating. There were the looks people would given them out in public, especially since neither of them were fans of not touching each other when out and about. There were Noah's friends, the ones who had grown to accept Kurt and realize he wasn't just a spoiled kid but who still gave him condescending looks. And, of course, there were Kurt's parents.

At first, both of them hated Noah. How could they not? Their darling baby boy was dating someone as old as them--he was actually older than Elizabeth! They could only see him as perverted, twisted, a pedophile, even if Kurt was eighteen when they first met. Eventually, Burt grew fond of him, though still wary, since Kurt just seemed so happy with him. Elizabeth, however, was a proud mama lioness whenever Noah was even brought up. The reasons changed from the age difference itself to what it meant for Kurt now that he had been with him for years, what it would mean if he chose to stay with him. Kurt had just finished college and Noah was approaching 50. Did she have to explain any further how bad the difference was? 

Kurt knew the problems, he knew that it was difficult, he knew that it wasn't normal. But you know what else Kurt knew? That he loved Noah. Maybe it started out as something kinky and perverted and weird, he wouldn't deny it, but now it was love, pure and simple. Yes, he'd most likely be hurt by the ever constant presence of time that was affected his love faster than him, more of Noah's hair turning silver each day, but he loved him. There was no point running from love just because there was a guaranteed burn--did no one read The Fault in Our Stars?

So, yes, Kurt was living with a man approaching his 50s while he just finished college. The summer after his graduation, things started to change. He had gotten a job at Vogue, nothing too big, but he loved it. Noah had offered to help him start up a boutique, have his own design company, but Kurt refused. This was something he had to do on his own. He had to make a name for himself. After a long week at the company, Noah said he'd take him out for dinner and Kurt, while exhausted, got dressed and ready for a night out on the town.

First, they were dropped off at the first restaurant they went to together, a fancy French place. Noah reminisced on the scene, making Kurt smile, especially now that he was actually allowed to have the wine that they brought out. Then there was a carriage ride in the park, Kurt snuggling into Noah's side as they rode around the city. All of it just seemed like normal Noah behavior.

Things started to change when the carriage went off the usual path. Kurt perked up a bit and looked at Noah. He had that look he always had when he had some surprise up his sleeve. But Kurt knew after over three years that Noah wouldn't tell him the surprise until after they got there. Kurt just kept looking around, trying to find out what the surprise was. 

Eventually, Kurt saw Tina up on the field they climbed up and his eyes widened. When they got out of the carriage, Noah holding Kurt's hand to help him down, she gave him a kiss on a cheek then backed away. Kurt didn't see where she went as he looked down to look at what she was guarding. There was a picnic basket, inside which there was a bottle of wine and two plastic glasses.

"Noah..." Kurt said, looking at his boyfriend with wide eyes. "What's going on...?" Noah gestured him to sit down on a blanket he pulled out and he did, still watching with wonder.

"This is the wine they got me at the restaurant when we first went out. I thought you might want to try it after all these years." Kurt just nodded, the white wine poured into his glass. 

"Look, Kurt, I've been thinking," he said slowly, "We've been together for years now. We've seen the good, the bad, the ugly, and, well, you know I don't explain things well, but..." Kurt locked eyes with him and Noah smiled, "I love you Kurt. I understand if you say no, I know what this all means, and you're so young...god..."

Kurt looked down at Noah's hands and let out a gasp. A beautiful ring of white gold was in a beautiful, small, velvet box. "Noah..."

"Kurt," Noah said, getting down on one knee even though they were both on the ground. "Will you marry me?" 

Kurt knew it'd be hard. Kurt knew there would be more judgements of both of them, Noah being called a pervert and himself being called a gold digger. His parents wouldn't be the most pleased, even if they'd be happy he was happy. But what mattered is what he wanted.
