Date Night
For @finstocksfuckeduplongweekend!!
âHey cupcake, you ready for dinner?âÂ
John looked up from his desk to see Bobby standing in the doorway with two tupperware containers. He frowned a little- something Bobby immediately caught.Â
âI know, I know,â he said as he stepped all the way into the office, shutting the door behind him. âBurgers would be way better, but Stiles handed me these after practice, and I feel like I have to take the little shitâs threats seriously, you know? Or he might change your curfew.âÂ
John laughed and got up to exchange a kiss for his dinner. As they sat together on the couch in his office, he let out a little sigh.Â
âItâs not dinner- well not entirely. Burgers would be better,â he said, scowling at the salad that compromised two thirds of his dinner, âbut thatâs not why Iâm...âÂ
âA grumpopotamus? Mr. Frowny? Sulk Face the Third, Esquire?âÂ
John shot a dry look at Bobbyâs innocent face.Â
âWorried. Iâm worried. Stiles...â He trailed off, suddenly unsure of unloading onto Bobby. Theyâd only been dating a few months, and he didnât want to run him off with undue burdens of parenting.Â
Bobby just rolled his eyes.Â
âYou can talk to me. After all, youâre his dad, but Iâm his lacrosse coach, so if weâre talking about whoâs really ultimately responsible for him, clearly itâs me.âÂ
John gave a rusty chuckle.Â
âThatâs right, the hierarchy of parental responsibility goes aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents, and lacrosse coaches. I forgot.â
Bobby mournfully gestured at the ceiling.Â
âWeâre the unsung heroes of child rearing.â
John eventually sat back with another sigh, a little lighter this time.Â
âI just feel like Stiles isnât talking to me like he used to. I donât see him as often... usually he would have brought me dinner, you know?â
âMaybe heâs trying to be supportive of us,â Bobby suggested, digging into his own salad. The kid could make a bitchinâ vinaigrette.Â
John made a non-committal sound.Â
âHeâs been pretty clear already that he supports me, and this is a direct quote, âbanging it outâ-â John had to pause for a moment while Bobby choked on a laugh and a piece of lettuce, âbut I still feel like heâs hiding something from me. He's definitely got people coming in and out of his bedroom window at all hours. Our neighbors have called me about it six times. But he hasnât told me anything about it.â
He sounded so dejected. Bobby reached up to rub comfortingly at Johnâs neck, pulling him down onto his shoulder as he set their dinners aside for a moment.
âWhy havenât you talked to him about the window visitors?â he asked, curious.Â
âAs far as I can tell, itâs mostly just Scott,â John answered. âKid grew out of his asthma and suddenly everythingâs a jungle gym. But there are at least one or two other new people coming over too, and he hasnât told me anything about them. Itâs... probably nothing. Probably. But I want him to want to talk to me.â
It broke Bobbyâs heart to hear him so sad. He pressed a kiss to his forehead.Â
âItâs hard, but well. Stiles is sixteen. Itâs a pretty normal, expected part of growing up to keep secrets from your parents. He might just... want something of his own.âÂ
John grumbled a little.Â
âHe can have things of his own. I respect his boundaries. But these new friends have been coming around for two months! He should at least want to tell me their names, right? God, what if theyâre criminals, Bobby? What if heâs selling his Adderall??âÂ
Bobby snorted a little laugh.
âJohn, if Stiles is just an hour late with his Adderall, then everyone in a four block radius knows it. He needs that medication, and he knows it. Heâs not selling it. Besides, other than a little distance, nothing else is really different, is it? Heâs still going to practice, his grades are still good.â
John grudgingly agreed and snuggled deeper into Finstockâs shoulder before saying, âI just thought... after Claudia died...â He had to pause for a moment, focusing on Bobby's hand calmly stroking up and down. âIt seemed like we were always going to be first in each otherâs corner, you know?â
âIf thatâs always been true, then thereâs no reason to believe itâs different now,â Bobby said. âWhich means that whateverâs going on isnât something he needs you in his corner for.â
John sighed yet again and pressed a kiss to Bobbyâs neck.Â
âThanks,â he murmured, âfor listening.â
âAnytime, cupcake. Whateverâs going on, heâll tell you when heâs ready.â They sat there together quietly for another moment before picking up their dinners again.
âGod this salad is delicious,â Bobby said. âMaybe his new friend is teaching how to make amazing dressing.âÂ
âI doubt it,â John said, digging into his own. âMrs. Anderson, our neighbor, said the person she saw on the roof was a big, rough looking guy. Leather jacket.âÂ
âOh. Is that all? I know who that is.â
John looked up in surprise.Â
âYou do?â
âYeah. The Hale kid. He came back a few weeks ago. Thatâs gotta be Stilesâ friend. Heâs nothing to worry about, John.âÂ
The relief on Johnâs face was evident.Â
âYeah? Youâre sure?â
âIâm sure. Heâs a good kid. Grumpy, but who wouldnât be after what happened to his family. Thatâs probably why Stiles hasnât talked to you about it.âÂ
John nodded sagely.Â
âI guess I can see that. He doesnât want to spook Hale away by making him stay for dinner.âÂ
âExactly,â Bobby agreed, taking another bite of salad. âPlus, you know how secretive the Hales always were about the werewolf thing.â
âYeah. Wait what?â
