My mom: Okay so the number to call the pharmacy is 123-4567.*
Me, after typing that in: That’s it?
My mom: Well, there’s also the area code, but I assumed you knew that.
Me, annoyed, because that is not the kind of thing I would assume: No, I didn’t. How would I know that?
My mom: You’re calling a local pharmacy. It’s the same as our area code.
Me, trying to save my dignity and not sound stupid: I didn’t know if I was calling this particular pharmacy or if they had some other place I’d be calling.
My mom: It’s a 123 number. That means it’s a local one. That’s why the doctor’s office has that, too.
This is kind of me complaining about it, but also this is an example of why I need people to give me every. single. step when they’re explaining how to do something. I don’t assume things that people think I will, and I don’t intuitively know the things they think I do.
*This is not the actual phone number
Dear Mom,
It’s not okay for you to make fun of my brother for having a bad memory.
Love,
Your daughter, who notices you making ableist comments and assumptions without realizing it but is too scared to call you out on them, because you’ll probably argue your way out of taking the blame and because I’m scared I’m actually wrong and it wasn’t ableist at all
Remembering when time Dad told me to stop doing things because people would think I r slur.
That only gets more fucked up to me the more I think about it.
