ABG Interpretation
You are looking for 1st, middle, and last name.
1st: either compensated or uncompensated
Middle: respiratory or metabolic
Last: acidosis or alkalosis
STEP 1: Look at the pO2!
If it's <60 mmHg, your pt is in acute respiratory failure.
STEP 2:
Anything less than 7.35 is uncompensated acidosis
Anything greater than 7.45 is uncompensated alkalosis
Anything less than 7.40 is acidosis
Anything greater than 7.40 is alkalosis
STEP 3: Look at pCO2 and HCO3 to match middle and last names
pCO2 is an ACID
HCO3 is a BASE
