The rest of the Risen all came back because they had been victims of injustice: Kate died from cancer at a young age; Kirstie was raped and murdered; Charlie suffered because of homophobia; Maria’s lost her husband’s trust in her, and her daughter’s life; Carlo was the victim of anti-Italian policies in World War 2; Chi was the victim of anti-Chinese racism; and Belle was the victim of an abusive family.

Paddy, on the other hand, wasn’t a victim. Yes, he was murdered, but he set himself up for a violent death by leading a violent life--one in which he abused Chi and other Chinese miners, indigenous people, and even his own children. We can also assume that he wasn’t only a murderer, but a thief, a liar, and probably much more. Paddy has no grievances against himself to avenge. Rather, he returns, as he says, for “redress and restitution.” Because he’s such a monster, we’re led to think that he wants redress and restitution for a “wrong” done to him. And then, we’re surprised when we find out that he is looking to redress wrongs he did to others. 

I should be clear here: we see that Paddy has a very humane side; we see that he became more compassionate in middle age than he was as a very young man (when we see him in season 3). But we are never asked to forgive him or to forget the misery he inflicted. In fact, we are shown how his cruelty and greed had ramifications that extended far beyond his life and down to his great-great grandchildren. The show doesn’t give him any outs, but at the same time it makes him capable of realizing, to some degree, that he made enormous mistakes and that he can, also to some degree, try to atone for them.

We’ve got plenty of stories about people who return from the dead, either as ghosts, zombies, or resurrected humans, to right a wrong done to them. We have far fewer about people who return from the dead to right wrongs that they’ve done. At this point, I think I’m more interested in the latter.

so... I hated that ending?

James who has been the group's protector and saviour is the one to help kill them all? Everyone you love around you is just gonna start having random accidents and die just so they can come back to kill you? srsly? Oh and the guy who was one of the main antagonists in season 2 survives so that he can get somewhat of a redemption arc and start to become a more likeable character just got go woops no i’m gonna be a baddie again and immediately die?  Also the laziness of oh, you all have to die now or else the world ends, that was some bs. not to mention the whole ‘you can hear it’ blows whistle and now they’re all suicidal bit. 

 what was the fucking point of charlie learning to accept himself and finding bf and starting a new relationship, giving him a glimmer of hope and happiness for a new life to not only have it taken away but also to follow the bury your gays trend and have Raf die too? Raf didn’t need to be there, charlie could have gone to him and had their moment and said goodbye, no need to kill them both. the fucking heartbreak from charlie when yet again a person he is in a relationship dies in front of him and not only that but raf comes back to tell charlie he needs to die?

can kirsty please catch a break? why did she have to go through that whole pregnancy thing if they’re both just gonna die in the end? And the fact that pete came back and admitted to doing it and died before she could have any kind of closure?????

why kill heysen? just so they could bring in another bigger badder Norrgard guy? that we get absolutely zero insight into why he even gave a fuck? like i get he was just in it for the money or whatever but what was he planning to do? what the fuck was up with that mercenary too? he was interesting and i wanna know more, I also respect the fact that he just  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ‘they don’t pay me enough to deal with this’ outta there

also what the fuckedy fuckballs was going on with Elisha and William??

Like am I misremembering season 2 or was it heavily implied they were another species? How did william come back from drowning the first time? how did elisha come back from the stroke? why were they different from the others? How did they know each other? what happened to that whole sub-plot? also the whole, we wanna have sets outside of town so we’re just gonna forget about that whole boundary thing even though it was a huge part of the previous two seasons hand-wavy non-sens 

And last but not least, the whole people coming back from the dead thing because people were thinking about them. was that not true or did they just forget that they’d used that as an explanation for why those specific people came back? Cause I get that Belle’s sister was thinking about her but who was thinking about Chi? Cause he didn’t find any family or anyone that connected his past to the present. And how where more people not resurrected? like, was james not thinking of sarah? was william not thinking of Elisha enough? did charlie not think of any of his friends or family who could have been buried there? what about owen’s parents? his dad just recently died and he was probs thinking about him given that he was cleaning his dad’s stuff out and hewas dating a girl who had come back from the dead? what happened to owen btw? is it just accepted now that he died? I mean not that I’m complaining he turned out to be quite a shitty guy and a stupid one at that. 

But glad Kirstie sort of got justice, and Charlie got to have a 21st century connection with someone (for a bit anyway...) I guess they were both able to face their demons. And I love Chris always and forever.

I possibly should have rewatched the first two series first, because I had actually completely forgotten who Owen was. Still can’t remember who he is.
