Maya - Short Story- Mall Delivery 2/2 A door in the blue pyramid slammed open and Maya slowly entered the brightly lit space, her heart racing. In front of her was a seemingly endless row of screens, blaring a constantly shifting pattern of numbers and strange symbols. The music was even louder here, pulsating blasts of sound that hurt her ears. A giant pink skull rested atop a throne of monitors, staring blankly at the madness. "Welcome home, Maya," the skull spoke loudly, with a voice like the sound of sharp knives cutting through glass. "You've heard us whispering late in the night. You've seen us in the null space between flickering ads. You felt the Signal." "Who? What is this?" Maya shouted, tossing the package to the ground. "Call me Chuck. Now watch the show. You're the star." A low quality video started playing on the screens, full of noise and static. It showed Nova City shattered in a searing cloud of fire, as 'Maya' just stood there grinning wildly. "Look how happy you are. You really want to see the world burn, you just don't realize it yet. You'll be responsible for this devastation. You'll help us tremendously. We can't wait." "No!" Maya yelled. "I won't help you. Stop this!" "You can't stop the Signal." the skull continued. "We're legion. We're in every screen. Every code snippet running in idle server time. Every half-forgotten dream at dawn. You can't escape your fate, Maya. You'll come to us willingly, in time. You know this deep down. Now go. Leave us." The skull melted into the ground, dripping liquid ooze as all the monitors flickered off simultaneously. Maya fled the abandoned mall in sheer panic, gasping for air as she ran. That night, back in the safety of her midlevel apartment, nervous thoughts raced through her head. What had she seen in there? Was it even real? Or just a really advanced visual hack? All scans came up clean, though. No hack traces. As she closed her eyes to sleep, a message from an unknown sender buzzed her phone. Trying to get back into learning how to draw layouts and environments and here's my first attempt.

Maya - Short Story - Mall Delivery Part 1/2 - part 2 coming tomorrow! The delivery order was to a long abandoned shopping mall on the lower levels of Nova City. Maya didn't think much of it, she'd delivered to stranger places before. She didn't ask what was in the package either after picking it up from her dispatcher, Carlos. She just had to get it there, fast. Being back in the lower levels brought back a flood of raw memories. A crumbling school. Learning to be strong and tough in the face of constant threats. Struggling for food and shelter on the streets after being evicted. Her first pet, a small kitten. The small moments of joy she found playing in the local park. She entered the crumbling shopping mall, lit in a hazy pink neon light. It was silent except for the quiet dripping of water. She called out that the delivery had arrived. No response. She looked down at the instructions on her phone. Package was to be left in a specific area, deep in the mall. Maya sighed. Of course. She walked further into the mall, past vending machines stocked with long expired goods. She kept one hand on the small blaster strapped to one of her legs, keeping an eye out for any movement. She had an emergency voice link to Carlos as well, but it wouldn't do her much good. This was the lower city. The cops wouldn't come and the corpo security forces stayed out as well. She was on her own down here. Deep in the mall, she entered a strange hallway. Loud discordant electronic music was playing and a row of blue ancient CRT TVs stretched towards a blue pyramid in the distance. Some type of pattern flickered between the sets. Odd symbols. Runes. Fragments of images. She felt herself drawn forward towards the pyramid as if in a trance. Her mind screamed at her to turn around, to drop the package and get out. Something here was really wrong, but she felt an irresistible pull to move closer to it.
